Re: MBB 3rd assistant - Papa John - 04-07-2016

Nicely said, garvin. I've decided to reserve judgment until the full staff is set and formally announced.

And not that it really matters 30 years later, but I wonder about the backgrounds of the members of Mike Montgomery's coaching staff in 1986.

Re: MBB 3rd assistant - oldalum - 04-07-2016

I think we all agree that hiring a former Stanford person was desirable, but my point was that we do not know anything about why Haase didn't hire one. It might have been his highest priority and he just couldn't get it done, for whatever reasons (salary, title and role, perceived incompatibility, lack of interest, better opportunity elsewhere, whatever). That "several quality former players with both head and assistant coaching experience were available" does not necessarily mean that they could in fact be hired (which is what you are assuming). If one or more actually could have been hired, then in Haase's judgment the advantages of the people he hired outweighed the advantages of the Stanford-connected people he could have hired in filling out a complete staff. If so, of course that judgment may turn out to be wrong, but we'll see. At the moment I'll put my bet on Haase.

I don't know about the full staff, but he had Barry Collier in 1986, who was a four year assistant at Oregon before he joined the Montgomery staff in 1986.  He then became the head coach at Nebraska and Butler for 17 years, and is now the AD there.

Re: MBB 3rd assistant - BrevinsBest - 04-07-2016

Is there really that much data that suggests hiring a Stanford affiliated coach to the staff would help with admissions? I can only recall one former coach (men's golf) that was supposedly so out of touch with admissions that very few of his recruits got accepted.

I actually worked with Pruitt's wife. Yes, her position at Stanford paid next to nothing. Almost all positions in athletics do. I am sure her position at Castelleja pays more. Not only that, I'm sure it's much more meaningful. Do I think her experience at Stanford has any effect on her husband? No.

While it may be nice from an alumnus perspective to have a former Stanford player on the coaching staff, it is far from necessary. I'm excited for new blood and a new atmosphere around Stanford Basketball.

For my part, if I implied that the failure to hire a Stanford-basketball-connected assistant was a make-or-break deal, I apologize. I think, generally speaking, that's a better way to go: Stanford admissions can be a thorny path for the unfamiliar, and it's almost always better to have a thread of continuity in recruiting. But failure to go in that direction is not inexorably a fatal mistake, and oldalum is correct, we don't really know what happened. Maybe Haase tried for a Stanford connection but couldn't find one available. It's always possible that Haase is taking advice from 76lsjumb, but I don't think we should jump to that conclusion without evidence.

Well, since I was mentioned, the debate rules allow me 30 seconds to reply...

I can't for the life of me figure out how a poisonous thread regarding the Stanford men's basketball coach's decision-making ever got started on this Board.  Wholly unprecedented.

Especially since, as far as I know, he hasn't set foot anywhere near Beijing since he was hired...

Re: MBB 3rd assistant - jacketree - 04-07-2016

It seems to me that the paramount thing is that Coach Haase has the assistants he wants to have.

I know there are plenty of Stanford fans pining to bring "Rev" back (this is particularly expressed on the Bootleg), but how does Reveno feel about that? He may need some time to recharge first anyway. (Reveno gave a very impressive interview about his termination to the UP student paper.  Well worth a read. http://www.upbeacon.com/2016/03/16/eric-reveno-says-goodbye-to-pilots-basketball.) Maybe he was asked and declined; he and Haase are supposed to be friends.  I'm sure some insider has the scoop. Reveno left Stanford ten years ago.  Other than admissions is still challenging, that department has completely turned over since he left.  How valuable or necessary are his "insights"?  And isn't Kenny Amman (another former Stanford guy mentioned in these threads) still a head coach?  Why would he drop back to being an assistant at this point in his career? Don't think Jarron Collins would be interested in a demotion at all either, particularly after having his name floated as a candidate for the top position. Doug Oliver? Who did people want?

Hopefully Haase performed his due diligence about Stanford admissions so he can't hit the recruiting trail running.  I haven't heard about him going to Rio this summer, so that's good.  :)

Re: MBB 3rd assistant - fullmetal - 04-07-2016

Muir trusted Haase enough to hire him, and we should give Haase the leeway to pick his team before he starts playing the game.  One hopes that every assistant coach buys into the Stanford ethos and perhaps may even appreciate it even more having not taken it for granted for so many years.

We'll have to wait and see how this plays out, but we know that this was a significant mistake on Dawkins' part that he only addressed once with Mad Dog and only for one year - by then most of the damage had already been done.  I think it was in part ego on Dawkins' part that he could get Stanford on his own and I do worry that Haase may be heading down the same path.

I'm concerned and I do think it's a mistake.  I hope I'm wrong, or that if I'm right then Haase makes a course correction quickly (i.e., next year).  It's also that several quality former players with both head and assistant coaching experience were available.
[/quote]

If Dawkins' main mistake was not hiring someone with Stanford experience at the start, then why did he still suck after 8 years? "Getting" Stanford was not the root of Dawkins' issues, being a mediocre coach was.

And come on, the students couldn't care less if the team has an assistant coach who was at Stanford when they were in elementary school (or not born), and it's kind of weird to me how much people here seem to care about it. Yeah, it would have been neat if some coach had been a star player when I was in school, but to have that be even close to a main factor in hiring someone is silly. I want us to have the best coaching staff possible, whether or not that includes someone who was at Stanford 20 years ago or not. Unless you can tell me you have some issue with these assistants beyond "didn't go to Stanford" then you're making a nonsense argument as far as I'm concerned.

Wow, good for him.  I agree with the argument that few, if any, fans will show up so they can look at a former Stanford star sitting on the bench as an ass't coach.  That being said, I'll bet Lottich might have been able to draw a few fans if he promised to go out and shoot some trey's during warm-ups before every game.  I'd show up early to watch that...

But, what's up with this photo on CBS Sports site? :

I think it is an attempt to re-live better days of the program.  Most of the names that have been floated around are guys who played or were assistant coaches under Mike Montgomery.  I think there is a bit of hope that some of that magic will be re-captured and transferred to Haase via the former player/assistant.

Re: MBB 3rd assistant - North Woods - 04-07-2016

Haase at least seems to understand the role admissions plays at Stanford, as it was one of his first stops upon arriving on campus.

Beyond that, I would expect that he's not operating on an island. He can see the profiles (including academics) of recruits under Dawkins plus will be part of a broader athletic department community. If Haase and his 3 assistants aren't given a lot of support from others on campus then something would be very broken. He should prioritize hiring coaches he works well with and people who will get the most out of players once they arrive.

if Pruitt is the actual Assistant - FrankO - 04-07-2016

and not LaMere's replacement...

then at least he has an in with the Trigonis crew down in Belmont Beach and a lot of the LA area talent base...

all things equal, I would prefer an Assistant with prior Stanford connection (Mitch Johnson, Robinson, eta l) but if not at least Pruitt has some SoCal chops... and it is Haase's call

we'll see
