Perhaps I'm being too optimistic, but a team that realistically should be striving for a national championship can't really afford to use non-conference games as QB tryouts. That's why I'd like to see the competition settled before the opening kickoff vs KSU.

If it's a tie, the conventional wisdom, which I agree with, is to play the younger player.

Also, if it's a tie, and setting aside any "fairness" considerations for the one who is ultimately not named the starter, I would think settling this sooner than later is much preferable for the team, so the starter can commence getting the bulk of the snaps sooner and build relatively more and earlier chemistry with the 1st team. There may also be a confidence building factor related to having additional weeks/months before the season knowing you are the starter (even after discounting out any iron sharpens iron benefits).

Practice snaps...I forgot those are a zero-sum game. I agree with the bias in favor of the younger QB, though I've been on the wrong end of subjective selections, and I greatly sympathize. Sometimes it's just nice to be surrounded with great teammates who are all working toward one goal.

I wonder about that. If the two individuals are similar in physical performance, I filter the decision through their smarts, command, game intelligence and how much they lift up their teammates, regardless of the year...although it's been my experience that the older players usually have those characteristics...not across the board of course, but when young players have those characteristics, they are also typically much stronger athletes as well.

I'm going to hazard a guess that Publius means a tie in all respects.

You're probably right. I'm basing my assessment solely of situations of which I have some familiarity. And I can't recall one in which two athletes were a tie in all aspects outside of their physical performance.

Burns and Chryst might be the closest I've seen. People at the spring game were confused as to which QB was under center sometimes -- they look so similar from a distance, and have such impressive arms. They look like they were genetically engineered from the "First Round Quarterback" cookbook.

Curtis Conway made a comment on P12 Network today (could have been a repeat, but I saw it today) that his big question mark for Stanford going into 2016 was QB, but that after having watched the spring game, his worries were allayed.

Eventually, I think even later in that first season if memory serves, Cordova was booed at Stanford stadium. I was there.
There were unsubstantiated rumors/rumblings that Christiansen had made promises/guarantees to Cordova on playing when recruiting him.

I think saying guys could rotate is coach speak in order to keep guys motivated especially the runner up in the QB competition. I wouldn't worry about Shaw forcing a second QB to play to the detriment of the team. He knows giving a new QB more reps will make that QB better. If it is truly a coin toss, one could argue to go with the younger QB, but I think Costello could influence that conventional thinking. If Costello gives the early impression that he has more upside than Chryst or Burns, he will still likely redshirt, but he could make it more likely to give the nod to Burns this year so it is easier for Costello to take it over in two years (his redshirt sophomore year after Burns graduates and while Chryst is a fifty year senior). Thus, two years of Burns starting and three years of Costello with Chryst being a 4 year back-up. I would still put money on Chryst winning the job this fall, but Costello could make the decision making process more complex even if he is destined to redshirt.

Shaw is a genius with this NCAA stuff.

He has been a bit low-profile for a 46-year starter.

Maybe Burns will win the starting job, and maybe Costello will win the starting job after Burns, but I would think Chryst wouldn't stick around and be a 4-year backup.

Quite an in-depth article about Burns from his hometown? Just belatedly opened All Write Now.

Chryst will be the better quarterback by bowl time at the absolute, and the starter in 2017. But Shaw wants to have Burns pressing Chryst to keep moving up his learning curve.Â
My other sense is that Burns makes fewer bogeys right now, but Chryst makes more birdies. His best throws evoke Luck, and his deep ball looks a little better; he made three throws in the Spring game that are as good as any I've seen since Harbs arrived.
