I saw a team with a respectable defense and a meh offense -- which is a of exceedingly large proportions step up from last year. If Stanford is as good as its preseason ratings it doesn't make a of exceedingly large proportions difference, but certainly Oregon State fans will get to see decent football.

That was my take as well.  I think they'll still struggle in conference, but they look improved over last year.

Have you ever seen a game where three players for one team were ejected for targeting?

Luckily for the Gophers, their next game is against Indiana State, so they should do just fine even without those players' services (I think some of them were in the second half, at least).

And Tracy Claeys' dreadful clock management and in-game decisionmaking continues.  The Gophers score a touchdown to go up 7 with under 2 minutes left, and he goes for 2 when the kick would have put them up 8.  I mean, I understand the value of putting the game out of reach, but goodness gracious, kicking means that Oregon State couldn't have beaten Minnesota in regulation, and would have had to score a touchdown AND convert the two-point attempt just to tie and force overtime.  If you go for two and fail (which is what happened), the other team can beat you in regulation if it so chooses, and even if it doesn't, a touchdown alone means overtime.

Exhibit A in the cast against Claeys: Hosting Michigan last year, Minnesota was down 29-26 with 1st and goal on the Michigan 1 with 19 seconds left and a timeout.  Instead of trying for the win right away (and calling timeout and sending the game into OT with a FG if you're unsuccessful), the Gophers let the clock tick all the way down, went for a QB sneak with 1 second left, got stuffed, and Michigan won.  Inexcusable.

Washington is crushing Rutgers 24-0 at end of first quarter.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - BostonCard - 09-03-2016

Don't look now, but Houston has a 33-17 lead on Oklahoma.  Go Cougars!

The Big 12 is currently drafting its invitation to Houston.

Why rooting for Houston?  Easy schedule after this and hard to keep them out of play off if undefeated and beat Oklahoma. Of course an OK loss makes it a bit less likely that Big 12 gets a slot, but not sure it's a net positive for us if we're fortunate enough to have a good year.

It's too early to know how things will play out. Houston has less margin for error than Oklahoma so we probably want them to win.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - jacketree - 09-03-2016

Houston getting too cute at goal line. Zone read from inside the one and fumble away the lockdown score. Will probably still win but....

Not a game of interest for most here, but Navy QB went down early in the second quarter. They will end the game with a Plebe they pulled out of the stands in his Whites. First man in history to March On and also play in a game. That's pretty interesting.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - Nan3cy - 09-03-2016

Seriously, Jacketree? As much running as Navy QB's do, and they don't have a backup on the sideline in uniform?

I think Houston is playing its way out of an invitation. A big school that makes them money and loses too much is more appealing.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - washingtonismoney - 09-03-2016

Texas A&M marching down the field ... only to fumble. UCLA's got the ball now.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - washingtonismoney - 09-03-2016

UCLA's tackles have been unable to contain A&M's pass rushers. Instead of taking a sack Rosen carelessly tosses the ball away, gets picked. Overall UCLA's offense looks reasonably good, though I'm sure we're pretty close to the ROSEN OVERHYPED takes.

The Bruins' defense is looking more interesting to me, to be honest.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - ChicagoCard - 09-03-2016

Rosen doesn't exactly have quick feet.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - washingtonismoney - 09-03-2016

It's really fascinating the extent to which the announcers are making excuses for Rosen during this game. The center didn't snap quickly enough, etc. etc. etc.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - washingtonismoney - 09-03-2016

UCLA's OL has been utterly overmatched in pass pro.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - 82 Card - 09-03-2016

Aggies lead the ducks 7-0.

I was surprised they only went two deep at QB. Once the starter went down they had no backup so the kid suited up before halftime. Actually looked pretty good finishing off a blowout against Fordham.

Feel bad for Tago Smith. He looked great after waiting 3 years behind Keenan Reynolds. A faster version honestly. Left the game in a knee brace.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - BostonCard - 09-03-2016

Down go the Sooners.  One other thing that gets forgotten is that this loss hurts the entire Big12, so the entire conference will look weaker.

Wisconsin is up 13-0 on LSU; Fournette has 90 yards on 17 caries with about 8 minutes left in the third quarter, so he may yet have a respectable game.  No TD's yet though, and a loss would hurt his H-award chances.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - washingtonismoney - 09-03-2016

A&M up 17-9 on UCLA.

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - BostonCard - 09-03-2016

Rosen 14-24, 6.6 ypa, 0 TD, 1 INT

Re: Week 1 Games of Interest - washingtonismoney - 09-03-2016

Remarkable scramble, heave, and catch from Texas A&M. Now up 24-9. Gut check time for the gutty little Bruins.
