Was it my imagination or did I see that our white jersey numbers were pasted on not stitched? The red was running into the white.

I didn't notice that, but I did notice that those players who were on the ground in the endzone got a lot of red paint on them.Â

Except for the '58 PCC champs, the Mike White pay for play days and a couple of Tedford's teams Cal has been woeful since Pappy Waldorf's three RB losers.
It's been a long time since 1938.

Beat a good opponent with a B game so that's good. Every year isn't going to be 2010 or 2011. Sparty played essentially the same game as Stanford tonight, but against Furman. Not too worried. Hope Phillips is OK.
Spread was 12.5 at game time.
Defenders are allowed to go for the ball.
Receivers aren't allowed to push off.
A 'touch' is not a block.
I sure hope Phillips is OK, too.

Debates re: the exact spread are a bit overly pedantic, right? Stanford beating K-State was roughly in line with gamblers' expectations -- winning by 16 or 13 really isn't *that* different in a single game -- which should temper the criticism to some degree. We were more-or-less doing what we were supposed to.

Yeah, that's my whole point. Our offense was a bit worse than expectations (or KSU's defense better) and our defense was a bit better (or KSU's offense worse). It's hard for me to get too hung up on the specifics, even though there's clearly plenty to fix, we have two weeks before USC visits to figure it out.

Just like last season, I think that Kansas State will prove out to be a much tougher opponent than people think. NW went on to have a very good season last year. I think that KState has a very good defensive line. It might be one of the best we face all season.Â

There's another fun fact about this game that I haven't yet seen mention of. We ran hardly any plays in the red zone. Our FG and all three TD's were strikes from further out than the RZ. The closest we came to running a play in the RZ was the handoff fumble that got run back into our territory. Our efficiency in the RZ is an unknown and needless to say will have to be better than the last time we were at home vs. U.S.C.

I was particularly impressed with the defense last night. Yes, K-State was able to move the ball in the second half - between the 20s. In the red zone the Treefense was Treemendous. Holder needs to clean things up but otherwise that was a stellar performance for opening night.
From my five keys to a Natty post, I think we got 3 1/2 of them:
- OL: Concerned. They did NOT play well in the second half
- QB: Ladies & gentlemen, we have a starting QB. Chryst is clearly the backup.
- ILB: Nothing great, but nothing glaringly bad
- OLB: Kalambayi & Alfieri were both beastly last night
- Coverage sacks: The DBs were ridiculously good last night, and we had eight sacks? At least five of those were coverage sacks, maybe more
All in all, some things to work on, a solid win over a good team, and a whole heck of a lot better than last year's opener!

Also, on top of the coverage sacks, there were several cases where we forced the QB to scramble because there was nowhere to throw to.
Also, K-state QB's were 19/41 for 5.9 ypa, and 2 INT's (plus a third, had the safety not happened first).
On your ILB stats... worth noting that Okereke had 7 tackles, and had 2 TFL and 1 sack.

The dude basically stiff-armed Holder in the face, and then their legs got tangled up.
Watching it live, I was convinced the refs messed up. After watching the gif over and over, I'm thinking the ref's got it right or could have called offensive pass interference. Holder was heading to the ball before the receiver turned right into him and stiff armed him. Holder did put his arms around the receiver but it looks like that was a reaction to the stiff arm.

Yeah I have no idea why anyone thinks that should've been flagged,
maybe it should've been offsetting PIs, but when the receiver stiff-arms the defender before the defender touches him, you really want it to only be DPI? People were just salty.
Re: A Few Thoughts on the First Game -
BostonCard - 09-03-2016
I think this is the rare case where both players were guilty of interference, so I guess a good no-call. Holder was pushed down, so definitely OPI, but then Holder grabs and pulls down the K-State receiver with him, so easily could have been called Defensive PI.

The color guy on the TV broadcast was totally certain that it was defensive PI for "tackling" the receiver before the ball arrived. He kept harping on that throughout the rest of the game right to the end. "K-State should have had 4 more points", etc. Perhaps he influenced some folks to see it his way.

Also, illegal hands to the face? I don't think you can stiff arm like that if you don't have the ball.

This guy brings up an interesting point from the Kal board.
Quote:Well we can't run our mouths until we actually beat them but I will note again that a lot of McCaffrey's production comes from his Oline. Last year he wasn't even touched until he was 3 to 4 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Here KS got penetration and really shut him down. Yes he reeled off two long runs, but he carried the ball like what 30 times? 90% + of those runs just looked bad. There is a formula to beat him and them and it involves having a strong dline and stacking the box. I don't know if we can pull it off, but I firmly believe several teams will this year.
I don't care who you are..it's hard to run against 8 man fronts when the D is keying on the run. I think we should just mix it up a bit more. Running 30x is fine if it is working. But if it isn't....do some more things. I also think we should avoid much wildcat unless our offense is really flowing. I don't like when we are getting stuffed and then we just keep trying the same things. It seems like we can do better in that regard.
But I don't think McCaffreys production comes from his OLine...I think it comes from his skills + the O Line....but probably more to do with his skill. He is amazing. He has great speed & burst, great agility, and he is very smart when he runs the ball. His strength & power is not lacking. I don't think he has fumbling problems. Pair that with his WR and PR abilities ... and you have yourself probably the best player in the country. His skill cannot be denied.
I think we're going to have a strong team this year. I was very impressed with the passing and execution of our QB. He looked the part. He's big and strong, and can run pretty well. He seems to be a pretty good leader as well. Strong arm. And we have a solid backup option @ QB if we need to go to the bullpen. Our D looks really strong and I think the speed of Rector is going to be a key factor in opening it up for McCaffrey. I hope we really develop a Mid and Long range passing game...in addition to the short throws which we've been good at for a while now.
My biggest concern is....really just the playcalling. Are we going to keep up the conservative approach? That seems to be the trend under Shaw, though he has had moments of aggression. Also, just how dominant can our D be? That could determine how far we really go. If our D is top 10 in the country like it has been before....and the offense can hold its end of the stick...than we can beat anybody. There'd be no reason why we couldn't be in the playoffs.
