Re: Targeting.... - jacketree - 09-25-2016

I'm not able to find a clip of the Schultz hit. In real time and replay looked pretty legit and great defense.

Owusu hit seemed like textbook top of helmet to head shot.

It will be reviewed and I'm fairly certain he can be suspended after the fact.  They need to get this right because defenders are at high risk of paralysis using their spines as battering rams.

Odd place to put this, but Fowler and Herbstreit are two of the best in the business. They were all over it.

My thoughts exactly.  And that was really obvious on the replay.  Not sure how it got missed.

Right.  Refereeing in real time is incredibly hard, so I have a lot of sympathy for the officials on the field.  And even on replay, it's often not clear -- cameras just didn't catch the angle needed to make the call.  But this one was obvious on replay (both that targeting should have been called and that even if it wasn't targeting, the ground caused the fumble).  Despite how the game turned out, I'm still furious about the calls there.

Re: Targeting.... - dabigv13 - 09-25-2016

Don't think ground caused fumble. Ball was moving in his hand as he was falling IMHO.

Yah just rewatched. Pretty clear from two angles the ball was moving before hit the ground. Still a terrible call, led with crown of helmet, hit helmet, clear penalty.

Re: Targeting.... - Snorlax94 - 09-25-2016

I think UCLA loses at least one defender next game after the league reviews these hits, and, considering UCLA plays Arizona next, this could make it less than "a million percent" likely UCLA goes to the conference championship game. Assuming Stanford makes it, I personally would like the chance for a revenge game, even though Stanford won.

Mora has been preaching toughness because his team has been labeled as soft. So this one little DB translates it to play dirty. Vanderdoes acts out and berates nobody in particular post game in an act of sportsmanship (lack of) and a couple of Bruins go all tears on the bench just like the loser Duck did at Stanford Stadium in 2013.

I didn't like Jim Mora's post-game body language as he addressed the topic of his teams' physicality...

Agreed 100% on not liking his body language then, but he did say some nice things about McCaffrey at the end which sounded sincere. So at least he was honest then.  :)

Re: Targeting.... - winflop - 09-25-2016

I went back through the game and saw at least four hits by UCLA DBs that could easily have been called targeting
- Schultz
- Owusu
- McCaffrey in Q3
- Burns

Larry Scott needs to have a private conversation with Coach John Cena.  That would be right after he suspends Goodman and the entire officiating crew (field and replay) for at least one if not more games.

He then needs to speak to the UCLA athletic director about that disgusting end Q3 highlight film.  And then he needs to place calls to Muir and Shaw.

My friend does sports photography in the LA area and not really sure how he captured this. They should send this to the officials.

Yes, and if you claim that he didn't have control of the ball (because his arm was limp even though the ball was still tucked until his elbow it) - Its because he was knocked unconscious by a helmet blow to the head.

Wow.  Just wow. That's a photo to scare any parent from allowing their kids to play football.

Re: Targeting.... - AthleticsDynasty - 09-25-2016

Is it targetting anytime a ball carrier gets hit helmet to helmet? Owusu took like 5 steps from when he secured the catch to the hit I don't think he counts as defenseless anymore

The rule only says that the crown is the top of the helmet. How far along the curvature of the helmet still counts as the top? I don't see a functional reason to distinguish the portion of the helmet that hit Owusu from the top but a homer for UCLA might.

MT posted the rules.  Probably not a defenseless player.  But a hit with the crown of the helmet is targeting regardless of whether the player is defenseless or not.  Add to it that the LB "launched" by leaving his feet, which is considered an indicator of a worse foul.

This photo proves that he led with the crown of his helmet and hit Owusu in the head.  Also, this was not a case when the ball carrier dropped his head before the contact.  This scumbag,  Goodman, rose up with his head to strike an erect Owusu.  This is what everyone is trying to prevent.  This is exactly what the rules try to address.  Terrible non-call on the field.  Pathetic call on the review.
