I forgot to mention ... Tiger Woods was on the sideline during the game.  First time I've seen him at a Stanford football game since The Big Game where he was booed by the ןɐɔ fans (2009).

Wasn't he also honorary captain at the Fiesta Bowl?
[/quote]

Yes he was the honorary captain at the Fiasco Bowl.  I continue to believe that for bowl games honorary captains should be former football players.

It's a social event for most on the shady side. That is what used to be the shady side.

I'd like to see some old fart, red and white checked Oxford-shirt wearing sunnysider at a Raider game. Might give him angina.

Re: :( - BrevinsBest - 10-10-2016

The construction of the stadium has nothing to do with the noise level of the crowd. Stanford fans just don't yell and cheer for their team like other fans do. They may be discussing their 401k, next startup, blah blah blah, but I think Stanford fans inherently aren't loud. The student section is loud, but small in numbers. The shady side likes their library atmosphere. I don't see the atmosphere of the stadium ever changing. It's just how it is.

The stadium was fairly full in the first quarter, but fans started leaving in droves towards the end of the 3rd, early 4th. I took off in the early 4th due to absolute frustration and boredom. Even when Stanford is rolling on offense, it's still not the most exciting team to watch, but when they are struggling so badly, it's horrible.

I don't know where you guys sit, but until it became obvious that we were going to get drubbed (so sometime just after half) the stadium sounded plenty loud to me. It was also pretty full, better than I expected with a 7:30 kickoff.

I agree, I thought the crowd was good at the start, especially given the time.  The student section was full and there holes in the crowd were few and far between.  Once it became clear in the second half that we were going to come back it definitely started to clear out.

Yup.  I'm noticing a certain pattern here, and I commented about it to my wife when he was walking in front of our section.

I agree that Stanford fans are more sedate than other fans, but the construction also does help to absorb whatever sound they do make.  If you have spent time in stadiums that are known for being loud, you know that it involves more than noisy fans.  But here is the good news--the old stadium was worse.

As far as dwindling attendance as the game went on--I have been at night games in which we were winning handily which had the exact same dwindling attendance after halftime.  It is simply a ridiculously late hour to take your family to a football game.

Looks like this whole "more signal, less noise" thing extends beyond just the Cardboard realm.

Is this officially our version of the Wazzou "popcorn guy" from 2013?

Re: :( - ChicagoCard - 10-10-2016

Idk, they're still there and wearing their Stanford gear. I'm really getting old. Am I the only one who thinks it stinks that somebody snapped this photo of them without permission and then tweeted it?

Have you ever seen a game on TV that didn't include the reactions of fans in the stands?

If a photo of Stanford fans savoring a victory was tweeted, would you object?

The only thing different here is that this isn't an image of Stanford fans that we want projected in the media.

Re: :( - Snorlax94 - 10-10-2016

Just to clarify, that picture is a frame from the ESPN television broadcast. And the Pac-12 blog shows a picture of the empty stadium.

Btw I don't object to the photo or how it portrays Stanford. At least those people are there. For the most part, it appears to show two couples, where one spouse is watching the game dejectedly, the other is reading. If only one spouse is a football fan, and the other person is only there to be suportive, and the game is not competitive, and one spouse insists on staying, while it'd be nice if the other spouse supported the team also, if they are going to try to make productive use of their time, why not read? When my wife joins me for games, if it's a blowout and I insisted on staying, she would probably ask to borrow a section of the paper...

Re: :( - ChicagoCard - 10-10-2016

Yeah I know people take pictures of everything. And now that the other point was mentioned, it was an obvious screen pic. Oh well, as Emily Litella would say, never mind.

looks to me like someone researching who they should start on their fantasy team on Sunday.  And silently commenting on the overwhelmed stadium wifi since they have to go old school and actually touch paper while they read.
