FWIW, from SI's Pete Thamel:

Quote:There's been a sense in the industry for +weeks that the fate of Oregon coach Mark Helfrich has been sealed. The counter to that is there's still no obvious replacement on the board. Oregon quietly pursued Herman in the same way that LSU did, but that move didn't make enough sense for him to start over in another region of the country. A report from 247 Sports indicated that TCU's Gary Patterson also passed.

Various speculations about who might replace him.

The miserable 49ers fan in me is quietly hoping the more rotund Kelly is getting homesick for the PNW.

Do we want to improve Oregon without any indication that Baalke and the Yorks will hire a coach who's any better than Chip?

I realize it may be super-ultra-wishful thinking, but the 49ers are so devoid of talent that I can't imagine that Baalke keeps his job.  And Jed needs to hire a President.  They need to wash out those Augean stables.

Re: Coaching carousel - BostonCard - 11-26-2016

Looks like Kelly is actively looking for a new job.

Speaking of Kal not hiring Mike MacIntyre four years ago, Chris Fowler tweeted something I remember from that off-season:

Quote:remember when Butch Jones left @cubuffs at the altar? And they "settled" for Mike MacIntyre? I do. Interesting how things turn out.

Kelly might be a problem, but he's not THE problem.  This will be a bad team until the Dorks sell.

Re: Coaching carousel - BobK - 11-27-2016

49ers are $45M below the salary cap.  Hard to coach with no players
With might have the 2nd draft choice probably a DB who missed this season.  That's our norm.

Re: Coaching carousel - washingtonismoney - 11-27-2016

Given the empty roster it's hard for me, as a Niner fan, to blame Kelly too much. Baalke is the main issue.

Honestly, watching a few Niners games recently as a fan of other teams, they look like they're doing about all they can. It's kind of like the Rice game last night, they performed admirably given the talent they have, they just don't have enough to match up.

Also, if you fire two coaches in two years, is anyone going to want to work for you? As long as Kelly wants to be there next year, he really ought to be.

SJSU parted ways with Ron Caragher.  Some familiar names on the list of possible replacements...

Quote:Not surprisingly, most names I'm hearing for San Jose State come from the Boise State/Chris Petersen coaching tree: Notre Dame co-OC Mike Sanford, Washington OC Jonathan Smith, Washington co-DC Jimmy Lake, Wisconsin DC Justin Wilcox. SJSU athletic director Gene Bleymaier held the same post at Boise State for 30 years. If he wants to stay in the Bay Area with the next hire, Cal OC Jake Spavital could get in the mix.

Except Spavital I don't think SJSU could get any of those guys. I think Brady Hoke would be a decent fit

Hoke would be a big splash for the Spartans.

Re: Coaching carousel - ChicagoCard - 11-28-2016

How come Greg Roman's name is never mentioned for any college HC vacancies? I understand it's been reported in this thread or another that he's never coming back to Stanford while Shaw is HC.

Well, it is at least possible there is a reason for such things.

I believe that Roman is currently unemployed, which isn't generally a highlight on a resume to be a head coach somewhere. However, before that he was supposedly the highest paid NFL assistant, so he clearly had some cache.

Perhaps more relevant, my understanding is that Roman is known as an NFL guy and not a college guy. I believe that the only time he spent coaching in college was his two years with Stanford.

Re: Coaching carousel - fullmetal - 11-28-2016

It's been mentioned by others here recently that Shaw would probably never hire Greg Roman.  I'm unclear as to the specifics, but perhaps there's a personality issue involved.

Re: Coaching carousel - DC 86 - 11-28-2016

His only college experience was the two years at Stanford and he has no head coaching experience at any level. I assume that his focus is on re-emerging in the NFL as an OC. Meanwhile he is still being paid by the Bills.

When potential hires are listed by the media the sources are agents and search firms, not the schools themselves. We will see his name pop up when the NFL season concludes and his representatives start to position him for open jobs.

Re: Coaching carousel - ChicagoCard - 11-28-2016

Oh that makes sense about Roman. And Fangio was also almost exclusively NFL too I think.

Slightly off topic, am I the only one who got tired of hearing Tom Herman's name speculated on ad nauseam?

Roman was Stanford's OL and TE coach in 2009 and 2010.  When Harbaugh left for SF, he was named offensive coordinator.  In four years as SF's OC, Roman was 11th, 11th, 11th and 25th in the NFL in points scored.  In two years at Buffalo, he was 12th and 8th in the NFL in points scored on offense.  In two years with Stanford, the team ranked #11 then #9 in the NCAA in ppg.

So he is probably not terrible.  He may not get along with Shaw, but he can coach.

Re: Coaching carousel - BostonCard - 11-28-2016

Roman is a great offensive coordinator.  He may or may not be a good head coach; the skills required are only partially overlapping.

Wade Phillips and Dick LeBeau come to mind on the defensive side, though they are two all-time great coordinators. Roman is not.

He certainly is not terrible. Where he fits after that is as hard to figure out as for any coach.

Two years at Buffalo is a bit of an over-statment since his second year lasted two games. At that point the Bills were averaging 19 points per game, which I think was not #8 in the NFL.

The two years with Stanford bit is a curious case. There is the ongoing mystery about who did what with respect to Stanford's offense at that time, particularly in 2010.
Shaw was officially the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2009, OC and running backs coach in 2010. However, in 2010 he was rumored to have been effectively supplanted by Roman with respect to running the offense.
Roman was the tight ends and offensive tackles coach. In 2009 he was also Running Game Coordinator that morphed into Associate Head Coach and Offensive Assistant in 2010.
And of course Harbaugh himself was very much involved in the offense.

It may or may not have been clear to the coaches just who was responsible for what, but it wasn't clear to observers.
