Wrestling.

Iowa has won 19 championships since 1980.   Oklahoma State has won 7 and the remaining 5 are spread between Arizona St (1), Iowa St (1) and Minnesota (3).

West Virginia and Alaska Fairbanks have won 24 of 27 NCAA championships since 1983.  Murray State (Detroit) won two , and Army won the other one.

In retrospect, I might have felt better had Army won all of the championships, but they usually do pretty well and finished sixth this year (second in 2008 and 2007).  And it is similarly comforting that both West Virginia and Kentucky (home of the Hatfield/McCoy feud) have done very well.

Since when do West Virginia and Alaska Fairbanks share geographical characteristics? (Well, I would not choose to live in either place, so I guess they share that characteristic. But that\'s about it.) Is the epicenter in Manitoba?

Congratulations to the team! Mi esposo and I were on a week\'s vacation in Manzanillo so were completely out of touch. I obsessed about the tournament for the first day or so but then went on to more pressing matters, like getting another margarita. Last night when we hit SFO we were waiting for the shuttle to the LT parking lot when a guy saw my Stanford jacket and said, "good for your guys winning the volleyball championship." That was maybe not the best part of the week -- but it was close. :D

It isn\'t geographic characteristics per se, it is the presence of guns in the home which determines recruitable talent, so to speak.  Alaska ranks second and West Virginia fifth among states in terms of highest percentage of households that own guns.
