No Christian at the Sun Bowl.  El Paso just got a lot less attractive.

It certainly lends credibility to the notion that college football players are only there to prepare themselves for professional football.
McCaffrey was named CoSIDA's Academic All American of the Year and carries a 3.43 GPA so it's not fair to say that he attended college only to prepare for the NFL; he was dedicated to his studies and to the community throughout his time at Stanford.

Not playing in the bowl game does say something about his commitment to the football team itself but not about his motives for choosing Stanford.

Regarding the comment about quitting mid-season, Cal Quantrill could have pitched towards the end of last season but had a draft guarantee from SD and chose not to return and risk injury. Given the millions of dollars at stake I can't blame the man given the circumstances.

Disappointed that CMac won't entertain me one last time in Cardinal uniform. But I give him 100% support for doing something in his own interest at this important stage for setting up career.

I don't get it as to why should any one should criticize him for pulling out of a meaningless game whose best outcome is Stanford's ranking rising by 5-6 notches. The RB position has a shelf life in terms of plays, and CMac brought it to every play in every game. Maybe he's still not back 100% from his injury, or maybe he just doesn't want a re-injury.Whatever it is, I liked his decisiveness in going Pro and making calls on what he needs to do. Just like he did on the field.

If anything, this should a message to the coaching staff on how to showcase exceptional talent when they are on the team. CMac was underused in his freshmen year and the poor development of the offense this season led to the current meaningless Bowl.

Thanks for the memories, Christian. Look forward to seeing you light it up on Sundays.

I wasn't really talking about Christian personally, (Fournette is doing it too, and I'm sure they won't be the last). I was just talking about the notion that players will be leaving their teams whenever they feel it is financially advantageous to do so, regardless of when that occurs. To me anyway, it just makes college football look like the minor leagues for the NFL and I think that is lamentable.
Also, if the game is as meaningless as some people here seems to think it is, one might wonder why we are bothering to play it in the first place.

That's the only reason I view this as kind of a bullshit move. How many fans bought tickets and made travel plans because it would be the last time to see McCaffrey in a Stanford uniform? I don't know why he couldn't announce this right away, and it sucks for them.

Otherwise it's disappointing but I get why he's doing it.

I don't know how anyone who has played a team sport could possibly not have a problem with this. He is walking out on his team in the middle of the season. He is team captain nonetheless.  Lame! I think he will later in life regret this decision.

I guess I understand why he's doing it, but this is pretty lame. Why didn't he skip the Rice game, then? That was even more of a meaningless exhibition than the Sun Bowl is.

I wonder if Stanford is going to get requests for refunds from angry fans who bought tickets expecting to see Mac play in his last game...

Couldn't agree more.  Extremely disappointed in him.  And I thought the '80s were the "me" generation.  Get some insurance if needed, but don't abandon your team.  Darrin Nelson would have played. Plunkett would have played. Elway would have played. Gerhart would have played. Luck would have played. Thousands of guys over the years with more heart than fame would have played.  And you can bet the Farm that Bryce Love will play, and play his heart out.

Re: CMAC not playing in Sun Bowl?!? - CTcard - 12-19-2016

I at least sort of take issue with all the comments that this is a meaningless, exhibition game.

I don't see why it is any more meaningless than most of the team's games. They keep score, Stanford's final record for the season will end up at either 9-4 or 10-3, a fair number of people will watch the game (at least on TV, more than most of our games), any stats count in the record book, etc., etc.

If only games working toward either a national or conference championship count, then Stanford hasn't played a meaningful game by the mathematics since UW beat cal and WSU beat Arizona on November 5; and more realistically any game post-Colorado. Personally, I kind of like that the season kept going after that.

On the other hand, it is pretty clear that is not the opinion of McCaffrey and thus I would suspect at least some fraction of the team. So - what do I know?
