While I agree that making a good cost something could increase attendance over making it free, there can simultaneously be other economic factors at play -- like the actual cost of a ticket affecting one's budget -- so, prices that get too high could also decrease attendance.
My guess would be that a cost of $15-$20 for the cheapest tickets in the end zones could maximize attendance (having some price so people will make sure they use their tickets, but making it affordable for a family of 4 on a tight budget). Roughly the price of watching a movie in 3D.
My guess is that they're also setting the mandatory donation ranges too high for individuals. I don't mean that as a complaint or indictment, that's just my sense. Once you have kids (say, ages 33-52), it becomes harder to justify $1,000-$8,000 for the rights to purchase 4 tickets.
Although, there is a ton of corporate money to grab. So maybe it's Stanford's plan all along that big corporations will be buying blocks of tickets to entertain clients and reward employees. In which case, yes, it will make more money, but I dislike what that trend is doing to sports.

What is Veblen and Giffen goods?
When price goes up, the quantity demanded also goes up. To be a true Giffen good, the good's price must be the only thing that changes to produce a change in quantity demanded. A Giffen good should not be confused with products bought as status symbols or for conspicuous consumption (Veblen goods).

That does it. I've been on the sidelines (er couch) for nine years now; having given up season tickets I had since 1985, after my son's HS JV year, because I was missing so many games and I couldn't give the tickets away. [Also, because I am oddly superstitious and Stanford suddenly became good (and stayed that way) since I stopped holding season tickets (2009). Don't want to mess with karma. Now I've seen many games in person over the years here and there, but I have not been a regular.]
I'm going to get back in the game; buy some affordable seats in the corners or wherever and ignore the vast swath of empties, because there really isn't a robust market for Stanford football. There just isn't. They've won like no one's business over these last 8-9 years, but that doesn't matter. They've featured a string of H-Man worthy All-Americans over the years; and electric once-in-a-generation players, like 3 or 4 not just in a generation, but over a single recruiting cycle; and three Rose Bowls in what, five years, and that doesn't matter? C'mon! This place should be packed every game, all game. But it isn't. And at some point I can't care anymore. I like college football. I like Stanford. Gonna catch some games and give the young Marine in-stadium text updates to whichever God-forsaken place on this geodesic ball of rock he gets stationed. Hopefully Oceanside, CA :)
There; off my chest.
P.S. Ooof. Well maybe a three-game mini plan. Just checked the schedule. We will be out of country the end of September through October. (Yay! Although, we aren't going to Australia this time.) The only three home games I can attend are the last three; which is definitely a primo slate of games. Those actually might fill the place.
P.P.S. I usually don't visit this site using a PC. What is the deal with karma and why is Teejers hovering way below freezing? It would take more than a 24-hour day of me punching the little + button to get him back to ground zero. Is there some dire thing that happens here, or are some of us just saddled with negative approval ratings? I know he isn't sunshine, rainbows and lollipops all the time, but aren't we supposed to toss around all sorts of viewpoints? I mean as The Dude says, that's just like your opinion man. Anyway, Teejers, you are now one point higher than you would have been otherwise. Or as you lawyers like to say "but for...." (Yes, I'm completely punch drunk after a day spent prepping for deposition. Lawyer: "Why doesn't your model show what the photos I just sent you show?" Me in my inner monologue: "Because modeling is hard man. Do you know how hard it is to match anything with a numeric model based on the limited data available to us. You gave me a budget. How much do you want to blow it by? Maybe your stupid pictures are all photo-shopped!!!" Me in my actual outer voice: "Great pictures. These really help. We're on it." Got the match an hour ago. Will only sweat through the t-shirt during the depo now.

That's crazy. Does anyone know if there is a way to vote on a mobile device or can I only upvote on a PC?

Use your mobile browser's "request desktop site" setting. Android and iPhone both have that.

So, what is all this karma/voting stuff? I was wondering about those little gold squares and the "reputation" rating? Wassup with that? I sure don't see anything I can click on other than to view a profile and send a PM.

Once upon a time, there was a way to vote for individual posts, which I thought was useful. Yeah, sometimes that meant that unpopular opinions got voted down, but I thought this site was pretty good at rewarding well researched and well written posts, even those advocating unconventional viewpoints.
At some point the board software was upgraded, and it broke the plug in that provided that functionality. In its place, the software allowed posters rather than posts to be given positive or negative "karma points". I found this functionality less useful, because it inevitably became personalized. In theory, it can be helpful to the moderators, since it might identify trolls and individuals who break the written and unwritten rules of decorum for the forum in order to warn them or ban them. In practice, though, this is a small enough community where Yvonne can very quickly find people who need to be talked to.
As for teejers, I suspect the negative karma is more a result of his style of posting, which carries a certain smugness, that rubs some people the wrong way. Then again, the very same accusation could b e leveled at me, so I don't think he ought to be penalized for it. From a personal perspective, though we have argued quite forcefully, I very much enjoy hearing his point of view, and don't think the negative karma is warranted. He may be wrong *wink*, but he's still a positive contributor to this community.

The gold squares indicates how many posts a user has made on the board. You can also look up this stat in the members link (View the Memberlist) at the top and click on Posts to sort by that column.
I think the karma system is very first-order and based on people's emotional reaction to posts. I also tend to think that negative posts generate a lot more downvotes than positive posts generate upvotes. A ranking system is only as good as the people who use (or abuse) it.

Since there seems to be an opening in this thread to ask a question about CardBoard functionality, I'm wondering if anyone would be kind enough to describe how I can change the chronological order of posts within a thread. I just changed browsers and it seems to have changed some of the dynamics of using this site. Initially, the normal topics came up in chronological order from oldest to newest from top of screen to bottom. I figured out how to reverse that to my preference. Within each topic, however, I am seeing posts listed from newest to oldest from top to bottom and would like to reverse that. Is there an easy fix? (I presume there is, but sometimes I am capable of looking right at something and not seeing it)

Is this how the posts appear to you with the Account Settings >> Look and Layout >> Show Most Recent Posts at Top option checked?

Don't worry about me and whatever points (or lack thereof) I generate. Someone needs to give folks in these parts the ability to distinguish between their a$$es and holes in the ground.
Besides, I take perverse pleasure in causing folks to take the second (or millisecond) of their life needed to rate a post (or whatever you do in these parts). I'd say more about such practices, but I wouldn't want to offend anyone's sensibilities or intrude on their safe zones or say anything deemed too political because . . . well . . . people just don't like those kind of discussions.
I should join garvin in his righteous boycott, but I like Stanford sports too much to bail on the ever-decreasing community of fans.

I was going to give you a + vote for being one of the hardy folks who actually attends [at least a few] men's b'ball games, but I hesitated, and, indeed, even considered registering a - vote, when I saw you were not sufficiently enthusiastic during recent "Dance Cams" and when commanded to "MAKE....SOME....NOOOIISSSEEEEE!!!!!!!"
Yes, that's right. We're watching...

Wait, if we're being graded on our dance performances, I demand a karma vote recount! ;D
(I might be one of the few Stanford people to pick up social dance *after* Stanford...)
