Oh, I cheerfully admit I have a soft spot for Ca.l.  I still think it's the world's greatest public university.

I had a grandfather at C.al.  He was emblematic of the place.  He worked for American Can for many years as a shop foreman, has his name on some canning machinery patents, but refused to join management.  He engineered and raced sports cars in his spare time.  He owned an early Corvette and bought my grandmother a ragtop 64 1/2 Mustang.  He was a figurative and literal fighter.  When his family moved to North Beach, he was a little French-speaking kid who got into fights every single day with the local Italian kids.  He got kicked out of Galileo and St. Ignatius, ended up at Lowell.  He was basically uncontrollable, so his dad signed him up to be a pro fighter as a 15 year old (and using his middle name) to take a little starch out of him.  He fought and lost (not surprisingly) three times and was knocked out the last time.

Anyway, he and my other grandfather (Stanford, '42) were both in the canning business and could talk shop all day.
