Conclusion:
We have a pattern of our defense not playing well in the first quarter--for several games in a row now. Tonight, it didn't start playing all that well until the second half. Our offense has not looked like a juggernaut all year, so we absolutely must find a way to get our defense going from the first minute if we expect to advance very far in this tournament.Â
Meanwhile, I wonder if it is time to dust off the triangle again to start feeding Alanna the ball down low. I wonder if she can score from the left block? The next game should be interesting....I suspect Drake is going to give KSU a major challenge. Not sure which team I would rather face--probably KSU after seeing what a small, quick accurate team like New Mexico State can do to us.
Alanna looks like our star player for her junior and senior years. Her versatility and range will make her so dangerous, because if she has an unfavorable match inside, Tara can scheme her further out and she can hit jumpers, including the three pointer.
I wonder why we come out so badly defensively (besides the Washington State game), it feels like opponents can't miss early on.
Hopefully, we can chalk it up to the early start and not playing for a couple weeks. I'm sure this game has put some scare in the team and some urgency to come out on Monday, better prepared. It would be key especially if we are playing against Kansas State on their home court with a partisan home crowd.

I was disappointed that Karlie took that late 3-pt shot (and missed). She hesitated & double clutched. But whether or not she was comfortable shooting there, she should not have take a shot, up 7 points, 1 minute left in the game, 22 seconds on the shot clock. I don't often see her make mental mistakes like that.
Yes, this performance should get their attention. And the attention of the coaches. I think the game plan must not have properly accounted for the size difference. (I would have been interested in giving Coffee a few minutes during the meat of the game (2nd quarter), just to give some bench time to our bigs & see if we could lob it into her.)
Did I hear Andy Landers say that Stanford was "not a great defensive team"? Of the ranked teams, we're 3rd best in scoring defense, 3rd in FG% defense,

I didn't mind as much with Karlie's late 3 point attempt if she had shot immediately when she saw she was wide open as she would have been in a rhythm. A deadly sharpshooter like her has carte blanche to seal the game with a 3-pointer, IMHO. But when she hesitated and double clutched, I think, then it would have been better for her to run down clock. The hesitation almost guaranteed that she was going to miss the shot.
Also, interesting that Fingall didn't get any minutes either when Erica and Karlie had 2 fouls each.
Yea, I think it showed that we shouldn't have tried to match their strength by going into a smaller lineup. The second half showed that the correct strategy was to exploit our size advantage, as Alanna dominated inside the paint.

We'll see if C.al messes up the record. Pretty confident about Washington, but a 7-0 start would be awesome.

C.al leads LSU 31-25 at the half with Anigwe only 1/6 and 2 fouls. UW has picked it up after a slow start in Seattle as well.
ASU will probably lose tomorrow against South Carolina, as C.al will as well if they win tonight as they play Baylor who set the record for largest winning margin in a NCAA tournament game I think by scoring 119 and limiting Texas Southern to just 30. How I wish we can have some lopsided games like that!

kal's up by 2 over LSU with :38 left in the 3Q.
Penn is thrashing A&M 52-35 at the start of the 4QÂ ???
Duke is all over Hampton 74-17 (right?) with :35 left in the 3Q.

Well, C.al does its part after all. Pac 12 6-0 with Washington up next.

UW just finished off Montana State 91-63.
So the Pac-12 was perfect (7-0) in the 1st round.
Unfortunately, ASU has South Carolina tomorrow.
Oregon State will look for a more comfortable win against Creighton.

Yep, kal 55-52 over LSU.
A&M comes back from a deep deficit with a 28-9 4Q effort to beat Penn 63-61. Oof.
Go Pac-12!
Congrats to Karlie -

If I'm doing the math correctly, Karlie's last 3 of the game was #238, passing her sister Bonnie in the Stanford record books for 3rd place behind Jeanette Pohlen (268) and Candice Wiggins (295). That's exalted company.
It's great to see the Pac-12 live up to its RPI rating. Has to make an impact on recruiting for the conference as a whole.
