And here I was sure I was the only person who ever remembered a UConn back court of Bob Staak and Bobby Boyd.

Next thing I know someone will tell me that obscure UConn sharp shooter Lee Otis Wilson was the best long-ranger shooter prior to the NBA 3 point era

I wonder where Pistol Pete would have rated. Supposedly, Dale Brown went back and looked at his college tape and concluded that had there been a 3 point line, he would have scored 57 points a game (instead of the meager 44 points a game he achieved).

He was shooting 13 3's a game?

He was making the equivalent of 13 3's a game?  That seems high.

I don't listen to a lot of country music, but nonetheless that reminded me of this and made me chuckle... My Daddy Was A Milkman

Pardon me for not knowing if that is sarcasm. I'm guessing not. Different Sky. Bruce "Sky" King played for Iowa and was drafted by Pistons. Sadly died at 30.

On the face of it, 44 points a game is ridiculously high. He has the #1, $2, and #3 spot on season averages without the benefit of the 3-point line.

But I agree, the stat seems too good to be true. According to http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/pete-maravich-1.html, he made 16.7 FG's a game. It's hard to believe 13 of 17 (75%+) were from behind the 3 point line. It wouldn't be rational. But remembering that anecdote made me wonder how he would compare to Lee Otis Wilson in the "best outside shooter before the advent of teh 3-point line" discussion. His FG% of 44% isn't too much to get excited by, so hopefully a lot of the shots were from long range.

Rick Mount was a better shooter than Pete. Some evidence here:

Mount was probably a better shooter, but Maravich's skills were more rounded particularly ball handling and passing.

an old piece on Mount.

No sarcasm intended. I bet the guy was named after Sky King, "The cowboy of the air." Immensely popular western/kids show of the '50's. Sky nabbed bad guys with the aid of his plane "Songbird." I guess my memory is slipping since Penny was his niece. Simple fare for simple kids like BobbbbK and me.

I agree that it's impossible to believe that 13/17 were from behind a virtual 3-point line, but if he had been playing with an actual 3-point line I assume that instead of shooting from 17/18/19 feet he would have pulled up behind the line a lot. The footage that exists shows a lot of long range shots, certainly 57 ppg seems like an exaggeration but 50+ ppg seems eminently reasonable, which is crazy for a guard playing in a major conference pre-shot clock.

I rarely am one to be trendy, but I must confess to wearing floppy gray socks after watching the Pistol play a few times.
