DC 86 - 05-14-2017
Stanford leading 7-6 with about 2:00 to go in the game.
Now 7-7 with 0:51 left.
Stanford turned it over, UCLA with a chance for the last shot but turned it over, Stanford with a chance with 0:14.
And Maggie Steffens scores with 0:09 to go!
And Gabby Stone saves UCLA's last chance!

Bruins have been the better team in the second half. Stanford pretty good defensively (except for the equalizer; bad post defense), but stagnant offensively.

FINAL SCORE 8-7 STANFORD
Steffens scores with 9 secs left after a great defensive play at the other end with 15 on the clock.

At the end, the team gathered and then cheered: "Stanford 113!"
I love how conscious all the teams are of the school's athletic legacy as a whole, beyond just their sport. Remember when The Streak was almost at an end, and women's tennis (improbably) won? They were extra motivated because they wanted to win not just for themselves, but for LSJU.

Oh, happy (mother's) day! Am so proud and pleased.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 8-7 -
M T - 05-14-2017
Stanford, IMHO, sat on the ball too much in the 4th. As a result, we had very few or any fouls against UCLA or any real good shots. UCLA tied it up with 51 seconds left. We tried to get the ball into the hole behind the defense, which was almost open all game, but I don't recall that we scored on that. So, it was UCLA's ball with 32 seconds left. They maybe had a chance but had plenty of time and passed out. The next pass got deflected and we got the ball. I guess the coach didn't realize he had a timeout left as it took a few seconds to call timeout.
Can you guess who scored?
With 9 seconds left the pass came into Maggie Steffens in a congested area about 6m out, in the center of the goal. She rose up and shot without looking at the goal. The goalie in the center of the goal had little clue as to where the shot was going and it was by her and into the goal.
UCLA, down 1, took a good shot from 9m or so with 4 seconds left. Our goalie was able to get her body on the ball, and the game was won.
UCLA may have won the season matchup 2-1, but Stanford saved the best for the most important game. Both teams had two US Olympians on their teams and they did well.
Maggie Steffans 3 goals, 1 assist, on 5 shots. 1 steal
Jamie Neushul 2 goals on 6 shots. 2 steals.
Jordan Rainey 1 goal, 2 assists on 3 shots. 2 steals.
Shannon Cleary, 1 goal on 1 shot.
Madison Berggen, 1 goal, 1 assist, on 1 shot.
Mackenzie Fisher drew 3 exclusions.
Gabby Stone had 10 saves.
(not all the stats)
For UCLA, Maddie Musssleman and Alys Williams had 3 goals each. Kodi Hill contributed the last.
Carlee Kapana had 9 saves.

Congrats to the ladies!!! Lucky number 113. Given the number of finals without titles they've had, it's been especially fitting they're the ones to tie it!

After today I had to ask myself: Will Maggie Steffens go down as the best women's water polo player of all time? 2 straight Olympic gold medals where she lead the tournament in goals. Numerous other gold medals in other tournaments for team USA. 3 national championships for Stanford including a GWG with 9 seconds left. 2 times the national player of the year. Hard to believe she doesn't have a good enough portfolio.

Actually, they denied the Bruins #114. Both schools tied at #113. Hopefully we'll pass them before summer!

Also, the conference is now only two titles away from 500. Of course between us and UCLA, that's almost half.

Yesterday's match showed how narrow the difference can be between the champion and the runner-up. Congratulations to the team, coaches, and staff.
