Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

Update:

* Aubert won 6 & 4.  Won 5-8 and 12-14.  Was -2 on the day.
* Li won 4 & 3.  Sealed the deal by winning 13, 14, and 15.  Was -4 on the day.
* Lee is AS through 15. (She birdied 12 to get back to AS.) Is -2 on the day so far.
* Heck is 1 down through 12.  (Her opponent won 11 with a bogey to Heck's double.) Is +2 on the day.
* Valenzuela is 1 up through 11. (She birdied 7 to get back to AS, and won the 9th to go 1 up.)  Is -1 on the day.

It's hard not to think of this like the NCAAs, with two wins already and just needing one more from either Lee or Valenzuela to clinch the match.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-09-2017

Lee loses 1 up. Really tough match to lose. She made no bogies and 2 birdies but lost to an opponent who made no bogies and 3 birdies, including the one that proved to be the winner on 16.

Valenzuela is 2 up with three to play.  It appears that she and her opponent played through the Heck-Seay match.  Heck and Seay started before Valenzuela and her Thai opponent but are a hole behind.  Heck is 1 down.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

Heck won the 18th to tie up her match and send it to extra holes.

Meanwhile, Valenzuela bogeyed the 16th to cut her lead to one hole with one to play, but she holds on!  She wins 1 up.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

Heck fell in 20 holes, but she made it exciting at the end.  So, three Cardinal (or potential future Cardinal) move onto the Round of 32.  And tomorrow is a big day, with the Round of 32 in the morning and the Round of 16 in the afternoon.

In the Round of 32, Aubert will play fellow Frenchwoman Agathe Laisne, the 33 seed and an incoming freshman at the University of Texas. They get the first tee time of the day, at 7:30am.  The winner plays the Li/Wu winner.

#48 Lucy Li gets #49 Bethany Wu (USA/UCLA) at 7:40.

#13 Albane Valenzuela gets #20 Cheyenne Knight (USA/Alabama) at 8:20am.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-09-2017

So, three advance:  Aubert, Valenzuela, and Li.

Lee loses 1 down, Heck loses on the 20th hole to another high schooler, a rising junior from San Diego.

If Aubert and Lee win their first match tomorrow, they will face each other in the afternoon.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-10-2017

Li is four-under, and three up, after eight holes in her match against a UCLA player, Bethany Wu.

This kid is remarkable.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-10-2017

As Hulk has noted in the Li thread, both Aubert and Valenzuela advance to the Round of 16.  Aubert may be the oldest player remaining in the field.

Basically, this is the top half of the bracket for the Round of 16:
Stanford vs. teenager
UCLA vs. Washington
Northwestern vs. Stanford
U.SC vs. Washington

There are also 3 Arizona players in the bottom half of the bracket.  The center of gravity in women's college golf is definitely in the Pac 12.

Interestingly, none of the NCAA champ ASU golfers appear to be in the field. Several of them turned pro but maybe others are playing overseas or did not make it through qualifying.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-10-2017

Here's the bottom half of the bracket:

Alabama vs China
Alabama vs Arizona
Arizona vs Mexico
HS freshman, Valencia CA vs Texas

Li is 11 under for her last 21 holes.  11 birdies, no bogeys.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Viking_Guy - 08-10-2017

Li beats Aubert, 1-up.  She'll play Vu, who beat Rhee 6 and 5, in the quarter.

Lau beat Valenzuela 4 and 3.

So only a prospect left, at this point.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-10-2017

Valenzuela played as solid as a rock and won 4&3. She made 4 birdies, 0 bogeys and lost no holes.

Aubert had trouble with the greens and found herself 4 down with 4 to play vs Lucy Li.  But Aubert won 15, 16 and 17 with birdies to take the match to the 18th hole.  She hit the pin from off the green with her 3rd shot but the ball had too much pace and ricocheted a few feet away. Li was able to get up and down from a very steep faced bunker for a par to halve and win the match.

Li advances to the quarters tomorrow morning vs Lilia Vu from UCLA.  Valenzuela plays the winner of a match between U.SC and Washington golfers.

Spiny--

I swear, that arrow indicating winner has switched back and forth a couple of times. :)

Apologies to Valenzuela.

So still potential for a Card/Card2b(?) semifinal.

VG - I watched live on FS1 so I was not paying attention to the USGA scoring site. Sorry that it jerked you around.

Yes if Valenzuela and Li both win, they will play in the semis tomorrow afternoon.

Don't feel bad, Stanford W Golf twitter got it wrong too:

.@AlbaneValenzuel wins 1-up and joins @ShannonAubert1 in Round of 16 at U.S. Amateur. 👏🤓🌲

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-10-2017

Oldalum - the StanfordWGolf tweet was correct for this morning's match when both Valenzuela and Aubert won in the round of 32.

Quarters are set.

Li vs. Vu (14 year old vs. UCLA)
Valenzuela vs. Ree (Stanford vs. U.SC)
Wu vs. Stephenson (13 year old vs. Alabama)
Fierro vs. Schubert (Oklahoma State commit vs. Texas)

Lucy Li is 15 under par in 3 match play rounds.  That's really great stuff.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - oldalum - 08-10-2017

you're right, my bad. For some reason it didn't appear on my twitter feed until after the afternoon round was over.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-11-2017

Aubert looked to be a hopeless four down with four holes left.

Birdie, birdie, birdie.  Down just one with one to go.

Li hits her approach to 18 in the bunker, Aubert on the fringe.  Aubert's long (35 feet?) putt for birdie hits the left lip but doesn't fall.  Li just get her four-footer inside the left lip.

Wonder if Li will play college golf.  Her parents might want to have her continue working with Jim McLean in Florida, where she has been spending four months a year.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Treebound - 08-11-2017

Where is Li's home course?  Talk about a rising phenom!  Good for her at age 14!

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-11-2017

Lucy Li practices at Cinnabar Hills in San Jose, in the eight months of the year she isn't in Florida.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - oldalum - 08-11-2017

Against Aubert yesterday, Li was terrific. Today, not so much:  5 bogeys and no birdies through 13. Maybe the course is playing harder. Down 3 to Vu.

Valenzuela has won the last 3 holes and is up 3 through 11, with one bogey and one birdie.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-11-2017

The field may be showing some fatigue from yesterday's 36 holes.  Bogeys galore.

Looks like a UCLA-Stanford duel in tomorrow's semifinals, and perhaps Alabama v. Texas.

Which means the three high schoolers will have ended their great runs.
