You know Shaw is going to pound the ball all day long and play time of possession. The only way Stanford beats the spread is if they break a few long TDs. We've seen enough Shawfense to know that they're not going to open up until (often after) they really need to do so.

Yep, and the fact that Chryst is coming off an injury makes them even more likely to play that way.

Yes, and additionally, if they get ahead, it is a great time to see what they have in backup OL, receivers, RBs, and QB. Costello probably will get a chance to show what he can do in a real game.

I'd expect more conservative offensive play calling if we get a comfortable lead.  However, I also expect that every man who gets playing time will make the most of their opportunity.

Geaux Cardinal!

Shoot... does that mean I have to start setting up the contest?

No one would blame you if you let someone else do it. But, I have a request for the person who takes the position. Could we discuss the methods for submitting predictions and scoring the results?

Of course we can discuss methodology.  Suggestions are always welcome, and sometimes followed.

Generally, if I were to bet I would take the points in games where Stanford is a big favourite. Shaw tends to go to extremes to run clock, shut down the offense, and clear the bench when Stanford has a comfortable lead. That tends to lead to smaller margins of victory than expected from simple evaluations of team quality.

The logic is intuitive and sound, but results have been the exact opposite. ...
Favored by 40+: 1-0 vs spread.
Favored by 30+: 3-2 vs spread.
Favored by 20+: 11-5 vs spread.
[/quote]

Very interesting. Will have to take that into account in future thoughts and discussions.

... and I never really believed the "close game because of not opening the playbook" thing.

Don't care about "the line" that bettors follow - Redrum - 08-15-2017

I care: #1 we win.  #2 Everyone stays healthy  #3 As many guys as possible get game exposure, experience and evaluation.  #4 The coaches have the game under control and can adjust if something isn't working.  After sitting through the NW game, I'm still traumatized by our #4.

Re: Stanford vs Rice Line - qwerty49 - 08-15-2017

Spread is down to 31 on Bovada.

An interesting betting proposition that boils down to how much will Rice score against our second string defense.  And how much our #2 offense scores against Rice.  We know Shaw will stay very vanilla and if we get up by 3 scores it will be turtle time for a number of reasons.

It all comes down to how well Rice can stop/slow down our running game. If they can't do it very well, we can score lots of points without "opening up the playbook". It we are going to win by 30+, that is how we will do it. I am sure it is not Shaw's goal or intention to score as many points as possible. However, we could score a lot anyway if Rice can't stop the run.

Not sure how big the traveling squad is going to be, but I have a hard time believing Rice is so bad they can't stop the run against the bottom of our depth chart, which is what they will see if the score threatens to get out of hand.

I would agree. However, as has been pointed out in this thread, Stanford has had more wins by a big spread than are espoused by popular belief . When this has happened, to my recollection, it is usually that the opponent's defense is just totally over matched and/or we get in a zone where everything we do just works. It could be one of those games. Or not. I remember in the 1968 game against SJSU that they were literally calling players out of the stands to get dressed and play. Then in 1971, SJSU beat us. Granted, that was a while back. But it does show that you shouldn't assume anything.

Re: Stanford vs Rice Line - djones - 08-15-2017

The trip is an extension of training camp. Team will be over there for a week. They have to take everyone. No coaches are going to stay back to tend to non-travelers.

The two deep defense, with the exception of the line, will be stout and the line won't be overmatched by Rice. Certainly LB's and secondary 2nd team will still dominate Rice.

I expect at least 35 points for Stanford and don't see Rice sustaining a drive.

Whoa, didn't realize everybody and his dog were going. Good for team unity, I suppose, but muy caro. I assume some Aussie group is footing most of the bill.
If Rice can't do anything offensively, I expect Shaw to take his foot off the accelerator before we hit 35, but we'll see what happens. It would be fun to see what Costello and some of the key freshmen can do.

LET'S QUIT DICKING AROUND AND EMBRACE OUR INNER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ASPIRATIONS!  OR AT LEAST ROSE BOWL.  LET'S GIVE THE TROJANS TOO MUCH TO PREPARE FOR, FOR A CHANGE AND OVERLOAD THEIR LITTLE TROJAN BRAINS.  SO WHAT IF YOU SHOW IT, WHAT BETTER WAY TO HONE IT THAN IN A WARM UP GAME SO THAT YOU CAN BE CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO USE IT IN THE SECOND GAME.  I'D LIKE TO SEE US GO OUT AND PLAY WITH AN ENTHUSIASM UNKNOWN TO MANKIND AGAIN.
