Stanford 38
Utah 24
Utahs D is untested, and we will see how that works against the Love Train. Not convinced the Utes O is any good either, but we know what our D can be like. Hopefully what we saw in the second half vs ASU continues.

I think Wittingham has our number and with the extra week of preparation, he's going to make us really grind it out. I think we have trouble with the elevation change as well. I think we're going to get into a grind it out sort of match and Costello will play well, but not well enough to open up Love's running.
Sadly, I'm going with Utah 23, Stanford 20

And Shaw says, post-game, that we shouldn't assume that Costello will start the next game because Chryst was rushed back into service before he was fully recovered and "we'll have to see how he (Chryst) is playing in practice this next week" to decide whether he's ready to go."

My framework for this week's game is that Utah's WOS (weakness of schedule) undermines the presumption that the Utes' defense is awesome. Arizona (not a Pac-12 power) had total offense of 450 yards against them, 200 on the ground. It helps your defensive team metrics when you can play North Dakota and San Jose and a bad BYU team and post puffed up results.
The only aspect of their offensive threat that appears to be established is their receiving corps, particularly Carrington. In this specific regard, I will presume that our secondary deserves its reputation, which is at least as strong as Utah's receivers. The QB position is in flux. Their ground game is, at best, unspectacular. I do not believe that they will be able to manhandle Stanford's front seven. If we can hold our own in the trenches, Utah will be in deep trouble. We do need to find a way to put pressure on the passer, or there will be a limit to how long we can cover.
Utah's defense is probably better than ASU, but offseting that is that KJ will be riding the momentum of his performance from last week and Chryst will be totally psyched to re-establish his claim on the starting assignment. This suggests that we will not be stymied by this defense - far from it. The Stanford running game is not going to be noticeably slowed down this week. It may play out a little differently with Wedington and Scarlett playing more of a role.
The team is evolving this season, similarly to the 2015 team that finished so strongly. I am hopeful and positive until the team gives me reasons to reassess. They are not going to give me those reasons. This is a team of true football players with great skill. They are finding themselves and our coaches are guiding them. As Larry the Cable Guy likes to say, "Git 'er done!!!"

That's certainly the glass is half full approach.
The glass is half empty one is that the last time we ventured to SLC we took a 5-0 team that ended up going to the Rose Bowl and lost to a team that ended up 5-7 on the year. While it is obviously a small sample, it does indicate that Utah's home lair is a tough place for us to have to visit.
Anyway, I like yours better.

Really agree with CornFed's and JRPI's analyses. I started with a margin similar to CornFed's, but just had it ta little tighter because it's so tough in Utah (as JRPI pointed out) and Willingham's success rate when he has 2 weeks to prepare

Vegas has us winning by 5ish, which seems right... maybe even closer. I'll go with:
Sequoia seprervirens 24
Juniperus osteosperma (The Utah Juniper) 21
I'm not sure we have the defense to hold Utah to 21, but we made a good showing against ASU, and their offensive production is pretty comparable, so... maybe? Don't know. i'm nervous.

Calling Stanford a place where Stegner taught is underselling it a bit. He founded Stanfors Creative writing program, and the fellowship still bears his name.

Why is it that Whittingham has Stanford's number? I mean, not trying to put you on the spot, they did get those two in a row in '13 and '14 and otherwise weren't that dominant in either year.
