I'm thinking the same thing. Hoping the reason is Shaw doesn't want to make it seem like he's stripping Chryst of the starting role due to injury. He'll throw him in there few series and if he stinks it up... We'll get KJ. Crossing fingers...

deja vu (Hogan @ Colorado)? ???
Maybe so.
As I recall, at Colorado in 2012, Nunes played the first two or three series. Then Hogan came in to take his turn. Hogan stayed in the line-up for the rest of the game -- and for the next three and a half years. So it didn't really turn out to be significant that Nunes was the starter that day. We could be looking at a similar situation here.

This is a tricky situation right now, but I'm guessing it will less tricky 36 hours from now, one way or the other. There won't be two quarterbacks playing next weekend.
You and Shaw know more than me about this, but how it be that there's no "true comparison" right now? How much more info is needed?
If what you're saying is this affords Shaw the opportunity to see both QBs in action against the same defense, well, I submit we don't have that luxury with the defense we have. A few 3 and outs and we're going to be down 21 before Shaw can get that brobdingnagian play card out of his face to see what's happening on the field.

Would anyone object to this? Chryst and Costello alternate series.
Chryst: Three and out.
Costello: Touchdown.
Chryst: Three and out.
Costello: Touchdown.
Costello goes the rest of the way, named starter.
Or...
Chryst: Touchdown.
Costello: Three and out.
Chryst: Touchdown.
Costello: Three and out.
Chryst goes the rest of the way, no announcement made, retains starting position.
Of course, it isn't likely that the difference between the two will be as stark, but I'm guessing there will be a difference.

Why does Coach Shaw (and/or his henchmen) have to say anything about who is going to start. For one simple possibility, what happens if Chryst slips in the shower tonight? Do they have to hold another presser tomorrow morning?
Did Eisenhower have tell Hitler that Patton was relaxing across the channel while the D-Day Armada was on it's way to Normandy?

Just reverse Chryst and Costello and I think you have what most people thought made the most sense and were hoping for.Â
And yes, you do lose your starting job due to injury if the sub seems to outplay you, and gives you team a spark, and inspires confidence in his teammates.
But will be rooting for whoever starts and not quite ready to crown myself a better coach than Shaw.Â

I'd also be curious if anyone has insight (from collegiate play or other access) whether this will affect team morale?
I swear the team looks more excited to play when Costello is in there, or am I just imagining this?

I am afraid I can't quite follow that. I don't see any way this decision to start Chryst can be interpreted as showing a lack of confidence in Chryst, in fact, I would argue the opposite. Starting him could indicate an absolutely unwarranted confidence in him! Could you perhaps explain it in words of few syllables? I can see how putting Costello's name in the hat at all would indicate a lack of confidence in Chryst, but a true lack of confidence would be to start Costello. I didn't exactly expect Shaw to start Costello, but doing so would mean Chryst is done. Having two QBs means you have some degree of confidence in both but not full confidence in either. Sadly, that is probably where a rational man would sit at this point.
Somewhat irrationally, I prefer Costello, but I don't watch the practices. However, in games, I have never seen Chryst actually play "well". Some say Oregon last year, but they were so bad on defense I can't take any comfort in that. If Chryst doesn't really shine against Utah, I think you are correct, start the young guy and take any lumps due to inexperience. FWIW, I think Chryst's lack of mobility this year is at least partially due to his knee not being fully "right".

I don't know much of anything about this -- which is kind of my point. I've seen what we've all seen on the field (and I can definitely accept an argument that's based solely on game performance), but I don't know what these two quarterbacks are like in the meeting room, I don't know what they're like on the practice field, I don't know what they're like on the sideline, I don't know what they're like in the huddle, and I don't know how their teammates relate to them. Also, I don't know which would respond better to a demotion and be the better backup.
I understand how people will respond to this, but that's the only way I can view this. If Shaw were to ask me to name the starter, I'd choose Costello in a second, but what do I know?

If there had been a betting line in Vegas on the results of D-Day, then, yes, Eisenhower would've had to announce his starters also.

Don't forget that Burns will also enter the game for called QB rushing plays. But keep it quiet! Don't want Utah to know.
Here's hoping that one (or both) of Chryst and Costello distinguishes himself on Saturday. If they both struggle, we will be back in the same place having the same conversation next Friday getting ready for Oregon.

I think WIM was referring to the fact that Shaw pre-announced that Costello would play. If you had confidence in your starter, and he was injured, and came back from an injury, you would simply say, "Chryst will be starting" without adding that "multiple QB's will see game action".

Plenty of pundits thought so at the time. That's why Belichick is Belichick.

As someone who believes Costello to be superior, my worst case scenario is both players getting a few possessions and Chryst plays at the peak of his ability and Costello has an off day, cementing Chryst's place as QB1.
But what do I know? In Shaw we trust.

I just hope there's a quick hook ready

You can have confidence in Chryst by admit that you also have confidence in Costello and want to evaluate both. Announcing you will play both means people won't read as much into it when Costello trots out for a possession. If all he said was "Chryst will start", Costello going on the field would raise questions among the press and maybe the players. But I don't see how this really quashes questions from the press.

The press and fans will continue to critique and speculate (as we are doing now). But we don't know what Coach Shaw has said to the team or specifically to the QBs themselves. I hope he has explained more internally than to the public. He does not owe us insight into his intentions. But I hope that he is more open with the team.
