Haha, RJ Abeytia coined a new term: Chrystello.

Looks like Hank coined the term.

Yes, exactly.

Neither guy set himself apart, in either a good way or a bad way.

So we will continue to see both of them, I guess. Generally I don't like that approach. But I don't think shuffling QBs hurt us yesterday. It seemed to work OK.

I'll repeat what I posted last week:  I suspect Shaw & the coaches hate this more than we do.  Time for one to decisively win the job!

Hit big third down passes. Did a nice job with read option. No mistakes. Didn't get sacked. Heck of a game. Against a good defense
I agree that I am probably biased. I was pretty disappointed by KC's play in SD.  And quite happy with KJ's vs. UCLA and ASU.

The intangibles just stand out to me.  KJ has more athleticism, throws a better ball and doesn't telegraph his passes.  I know the stats don't reflect that, but that's what I see.

These QB controversies never help team moral or productivity.  Hopefully, the next two games will allow one QB to elevate above the other prior to the following games.

I'm old enough to remember Cordova and Benjamin. (With Burns as Waldvogel.)  The situation was painful then, as it is now.

The question is whether the inconsistency implied by our use of multiple quarterbacks impacts Stanford's offense less than the uncertainty of having to face multiple quarterbacks impacts our opponents' defenses.

Re: QB tale of the tape - Hurlburt88 - 10-08-2017

Hard to prove, but my logic says multiple quarterbacks hurts us more than the defenses prepping for us.
-  Offensive rhythm, snap count timing, pass timing, etc. compromised
-  Lack of reps in practice as a starting unit
-  A firmly rooted starter can still execute game-plans with different twists
-  My clincher:  many many very smart coaches have bypassed this approach.  Doesn't absolutely "prove" my point, however is good enough for me in addition to the above points.

Re: QB tale of the tape - BostonCard - 10-08-2017

I counted one delay of game yesterday, in the face of play clocks that didn't work, no burnt time outs (Utah had two), and one false start, plus one illegal procedure call.  That doesn't seem unusually high.

Re: QB tale of the tape - washingtonismoney - 10-08-2017

It looked like there was some confusion on two consecutive plays on Costello's goal-to-go situation, resulting in mediocre results. Whether that's on Costello (or someone else's fault), I can't say.

To continue various slices-and-dices... Costello had a 79.3 QBR (adjusted up to a 88.7). Which is pretty good. Chryst's 62.2 before adjustment is mediocre; the 77.1 post-adjustment is pretty solid.

Re: QB tale of the tape - CardinalSagehen - 10-08-2017

Costello impressed me on two plays in particular where I suspect (hypothetically) that Chryst would have failed.

In the first case, the Utah LB blitzed up the middle, perfectly timed, and was in Costello’s face right after the snap.  Costello bought just enough time by sprinting a couple steps to his right, and then he delivered a catchable ball to the receiver, who dropped it.  The other case was when he hit Stewart running a crossing pattern from left to right, just a split-second before getting blasted from the blind side.  Stewart ran for a nice gain after the catch. Some may remember that JJ was running open on the same pattern at SDSU when Chryst tried to deliver the ball a bit too late and was strip-sacked from the blind side.  It might be an unfair comparison - I didn’t measure how much time each of them had before the rush was on them - but the situation sure seemed similar in real-time.  Costello produced a nice gain, while Chryst produced a fumble.  In both of these cases, Costello’s quick decision-making was the key to the play.

I trust the coaching staff’s decision either way, but I continue to see one QB that seems to react more quickly and instinctively when things don’t go perfectly as planned. The tougher the opponent, the more that ability could matter.

KC was 8-15. With two drops. No turnovers. No sacks. Played well.

Chryst didn't play poorly enough to lose the job, Costello didn't play well enough to take it from him.

Well, that needs to be taken with a of exceedingly large proportions grain of salt.  Costello only had what, two series?  Whatever it was, he didn't have nearly the number of opportunities Chryst had.  Chryst was 50% completions.  This is who he is.  Costello was 60% completions.  This is who he is.  When you consider Costello also runs better, how does it not make more sense to give Costello more opportunities given he so clearly has more upside.

I think you are proving my point. Whether we agree with it or not, Chryst was named the starter and he didn't do anything to lose the job. Costello wasn't going to get the same number of series, and although I think he played decently he didn't play as well as he did vs UCLA & ASU so didn't play well enough to merit more series (I think he had one or maybe two in the second half).

I'm not saying it's right or fair. Just reflecting where I think the coaches' heads are.

I'd love to see Costello get more reps because I think he's the better QB but I'd rather see a starter named who takes the snaps until he's hurt or not performing. This offense needs stability.

Re: QB tale of the tape - Hurlburt88 - 10-09-2017

Repeating . . . one needs to "win" the job at this point.  Thinking back to Hogan taking over, Shaw clearly allowed this to happen.  I suspect he does again.Â
