And 2 losses, one of which (SDSU) you can pin directly on Chryst's poor play. And last week he played even worse but thankfully it was against a bad team. Would've been a loss against any other conference opponent.

I think he was setting up a weird mirror image of Leach, who did yank his starting quarterback, managed to lose the game anyways, and now has decided to start Falk against us.

Seems like we will never know the full thinking, but I struggle with the theories where Shaw is playing Sone complex game. I think he felt that KC was prepared and wanted to give him every chance to succeed once in the heat of the battleand he may look back and feel he should have made a change. But now he feels KJ gives us the best chance so there you have it.Â

I think Utah and ASU are proving to be not-easy teams. Not the same caliber as WSU/UW/ND but not pushovers either. Chryst played well in those games, but he stunk against SDSU and last week. Time for some EUTM and mobility back there

KJ has many talents, and the one that I think will help the most vs Washington State and distinguishes him from KC is his mobility and speed. He is a very credible threat to keep the ball and do some damage on zone reads. Hogan had a field day running the ball vs the Cougars a couple of years ago when nothing else was working well.
Well, not to retread old debates but... KC definitely had mobility and speed. Maybe not Luck or Cam Newton level, but definitely a plus athlete for a college QB.* He just was inconsistent about when he chose to utilize it.
*(e.g., FWIW, Chryst had a 98 SPARQ rating in high school:
http://www.espn.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/141105/keller-chryst ... which is pretty good. Not amazing, but certainly better than average.)
I probably should have added "relative" in there somewhere. I don't have any stats to back this up, but it seems to me based on the wildly subjective eye test that KC has lost a step, burst or some general mobility since his knee injury. Not to say that he won't eventually be back to the way he was, but it's been less than year than he was injured in the Sun Bowl.
I agree that Chryst is likely still limited somewhat by his prior ACL injury. Regardless of his SPARQ rating, however, in-game athleticism is just a completely different metric compared to track speed. Andrew Luck ran a 40 just .1 slower then Colin Kaepernick, but never had anywhere near the in-game athleticism when scrambling. Alex Smith and Aaron Rogers have the same 40 time, yet Rogers is much more dangerous as a runner. Chryst, whether from the ACL or not, plays slower and more tentatively then his numbers suggest. Costello actually has a slower reported 40 time then Chryst coming out of high school, but clearly shows more athleticism on the field.
Of course, athleticism, while helpful, is not necessary to be a great passer. Great QBs know how to move in the pocket to avoid the rush and create throwing lanes. Likewise, accuracy, timing, and field vision are all more rare attributes then pure athleticism, unfortunately Chryst just hasn't consistently shown the pocket presence or passing skills to make his immobility less of a liability. It must be aggravating for the coaches to see just how good he can be (QBR 95.5 against Oregon, a near perfect game), to throwing up such air balls against SDSU (QBR 10.2) and OSU (QBR 18.8 ). Brilliance without consistency is just not enough for this team.
Sample size is small, but so far KJ has put up QBRs of 95.7, 94, 90, 73, 99.9. Here's hoping that trend continues.

I don't know about Chryst's EUTM, but he seems to be somewhat of a team leader and well respected. That probably isn't the problem :). Chryst just doesn't play "fast" back there, and seems to be a very erratic passer, great one week, bad the next. While there are plenty of theories as to why that is, nothing has cured it, and that is a problem.
One thing concerns me a bit. Shaw has stated that this change was motivated by performance in practice this week. I wonder if it its a simple as this: KJ runs the zone read much better than KC and is more of a threat to run. Arizona killed WSU with QB runs. We defeated (barely) WSU two years ago running the QB. Therefore, the better runner starts! It may be that this choice has little to do with the fact that KC had trouble completing passes last week. I obviously don't know, but it could be we got what we want for the "wrong" reason!

I understand what you're saying BC, but we just had a 1 point win over far-and-away the worst team in the conference, to whom we would have lost if not for a late fumble recovery.

But...such is life. I know that sounds flippant, but if he doesn't put the team in the best position, it's tougher for the other 70-so players. And in the meantime, he gets a 4 year scholarship to Stanford, a Rose Bowl ring, etc.

Yes, I completely agree with this.
I think Shaw stuck with Chryst last week because he thought Chryst could recover the mojo he had against Oregon. I think Shaw changed QBs this week because he thinks it gives us the best chance to win, given what we know in the wake of the OSU game, film review, and a week of practice.
Shaw seems to like his decisions to be deliberate and planned in advance, rather than made on the spur of the moment. Shaw seems to like to stick with his decisions long enough to give them a full and complete opportunity to succeed. This means that he sometimes makes changes more slowly than some fans would like. But Shaw really is trying to give his team its best chance to win. It's just that there are differences of opinion about how long he should stick with a plan before trying something else.
I think that's all there is to it. I don't see any need to speculate about Shaw's making decisions due to extraneous factors unrelated to winning the game.

Makes me wonder about KCs future with us. Assuming (could prove very wrong) he does not play significantly for the rest of this year, does he grad transfer?  NFL would not seem an option, which was mentioned in a few posts. I was thrilled Burns decided to come back for the depth and practice presence. Doesnt feel as likely with Chryst though
Re: Costello to start - announced -
Phogge - 11-03-2017
He probably won't transfer to Wisconsin since the two year incumbent Hornibrook is a soph and the team is undefeated under him this year. Not many offenses geared to a non running QB these days. I think he stays and competes.
