Also, I heard it likely that the other Fiesta team is the best group of 5 team, which sets up the possibility of Stanford going up against its former QB, Scott Frost.

I thought the Big 12 champ is committed to the Fiesta Bowl if it's not in the playoff?
No, Big 12 champ goes to the Sugar Bowl.
Apparently much of this has now changed. The only NY6 bowl game with conference ties this year is the Orange Bowl which is ACC vs. B1G, SEC, or Votre Dame. Everything else is up for grabs.

And now back to Big Game Week - BEAT KAL!!!
This is correct, there are no conference tie-ins for the Sugar, Fiesta or Peach this year. For purely geographical reasons the Fiesta is the most likely bowl game for the Pac-12 champ but it's not a contractual obligation.

HOLIDAY BOWL IF WE DON'T WIN THE PAC12
Both pundits at ESPN (Bonagura, Hale) now have Cardinal in Holiday Bowl... vs MICH (Harbaugh).  A return to San Diego for Capt Khakis.
They have U$C winning Pac12 no matter whether WAST or us.  If WE win Pac12, I think we get FIESTA... vs WISC, OHST.
http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/21386383/week-11-college-football-bowl-projections-2017
Domers losing badly to MIAM cost them the Playoffs and a better bowl.  Hurricanes really shut 'em down on the front line, plus the picks.

Looks like ALAMO wants Apple Cup Winner, WASH or WAST (vs TCU or OKST), because more fans will travel from damp Northwest.
[If WAST beats WASH, and also defeats U$C (again), then Alamo happily takes the Troyens. We beat WASH, so we get Holiday Bowl.]
Stanford has never been to Holiday Bowl, so they would take us.  They want Love, and WAST was there last year.
Dec 28, 6pm PT kickoff, on FS1 (not ESPN).
Apple Cup loser gets FF Frozen Chicken Bowl.  We hate that bowl.  The Stanford dorms aren't even open then.
So beating the Huskies keeps us out of the Friggin Farms Bowl.

Sun Bowl wants ZONA and monster QB K.Tate vs the other dazzling QB:  Lamar Alexander and LOUV.  Look for a Basketball score.

THE PILE
Six teams in Pac12 have 5 wins -- Parity, much?  AZST, ORST and UTAH probably don't make it and end up on the couch.
Over next two games Kal can beat UCLA in LA to finish; Ducks get the Beavs in Autzen; and COLO tops UTAH in SLC, couple of parka teams.
VEGAS, CACTUS, and TO-BE-NAMED Bowl get the holiday leftovers from the pile of six-win teams.

Selfishly, I would prefer the Holiday Bowl.  I like San Diego, I have close family members that I don't get to see enough down there.

As a Stanford fan, I'll take the highest bowl against the toughest opponent we can get.

FWLIW, the ESPN predictor for Big Game and the Apple Cup implies a 77% chance that Stanford plays for the Pac12 championship. I can't imagine they'd give us more than a 1 in 3 chance of winning that game, though.

The BI folks are not taking a rosy outlook on the BG prospects for the Bares: https://bearinsider.com/forums/2/topics/76838

If FPI rankings use the "difference is the spread on a neutral field" metric, then we'd be favored by 2 over USC, currently.

IF, IF Stanford wins out and goes to the Fiesta (pending an UW win over WSU, and Stanford then beating U$C in the championship) I will be happy to make the short drive from Tucson. Hell I might actually host a tailgate if people do not want to go to the alumni organized one.

I'll be driving up I-10 right behind you.

Can I make you a drink when you get there? Would be nice to finally meet you.

Sure...but we can also have a drink at the MO Club beforehand and discuss it.

There's another potential wrinkle.  If UW beats WSU (and Utah), they would be 10-2, which might make them eligible for a New Year's 6 bowl.  You could conceivably have a situation where (god forbid) USC wins the Pac-12 championship over Stanford and goes to the Fiesta.  UW could go to another New Years 6 bowl if it wins out (they are currently 16th but lots of dominos still to fall.  The next pick would go to the Alamo bowl which would have a choice between 9-3 WSU and 9-4 Stanford; you maintain they would go with a 9-3 WSU, but who knows?  Otherwise we fall to the Holiday, which wouldn't be the end of the world.

But the key is to beat Cal.

Alamo presumes either WA school would travel more to San Antone than Stanford fans would.
... and they'd be right.  More Stanford fans would travel to San Diego.
And the buidup would be good behind a potential Shaw vs Harbaugh matchup.

Well, we could also beat $C and the conference could get two NY6 teams (although I think it'll be hard for UW to get into one unless they really beat WSU). I believe the conference champ is guaranteed a spot. And then we start to wonder which other NY6 bowl would we most likely be slotted in...

Another piece of the puzzle that seems to make the Holiday most likely for Stanford is WSU's very unlikely to be there choice this year, as they went last year. I believe that's the situation where the top end bowls can swap teams around a bit (and Stanford has never been to the Holiday Bowl, I think they know our fans would be pretty excited about it).

The other appeal of Stanford is we'll have a Voldemort runner up on the team, which likely helps draw TV ratings. This is also why UA is probably a more popular pick than other middling teams as well.
