Love limped off the field multiple times vs. C.al, just as he had done vs. Washington the prior week.  He might miss a series or two, but he returned each time. A real warrior.

But the play that became his final carry was different.  Love re-injured his ankle on a 1 yard run early in the 4th quarter. You could see him on the ground, pounding the turf either in pain or in frustration because he knew that his day was done (or both). I guess Notre Dame will have to prepare as if he is going to play.  I'll be surprised if he is used as anything other than a decoy.

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - JJJ - 11-20-2017

If this The Athletic article is to be believed, Love is dealing with 2 gimpy ankles. I was wondering why the left one looked heavily supported when I thought he'd hurt his right ankle. It's behind a paywall but the relevant part can be viewed in the preview. (from All Write Now today)

Quote:The dynamic Cardinal running back had just six carries for 17 yards and missed some time while watching from the sidelines after getting his left ankle re-taped. This, while already dealing with a sprained right ankle that's bothered him for several weeks.

Not really news.  While he has looked almost 100% after the snap of the ball, it has been very obvious that he is at best 75% going into the huddle.  And after each play he looks more like both ankles are not even close as he hobbles off the field.

However, I am not so sure about the never play view.

If WSU wins the Apple Cup, then Stanford's better bowls are available only with a Notre Dame win.  Also, for Love playing against Notre Dame (and their slow to my eye defense) has got to be appealing.  If he can perform well against Notre Dame then his draft status soars.  Also, if WSU wins then there is not another game for ~5 weeks.

So to not play love would imply
Stanford believes UW will win.
Stanford believes 1 week of rest will make a big difference against USC.
Bryce Love is OK getting labelled as "Soft" or "Fragile" when the highest profile team comes to town. and he stands on the sideline.

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - Spiny_Norman - 11-20-2017

Come on, how tough is Love compared to Ernie Nevers, who played against Notre Dame on TWO broken ankles in the 1927 Rose Bowl, rushed for over 100 yards AND played defense.  At least that is the lore.

http://www.gostanford.com/news/2016/10/11/football-insider-a-game-of-legends.aspx

Btw, I am being completely facetious in that comment about Bryce Love. He has certainly proved his warrior status. I stand in awe of what all of these players are willing to put their bodies through to compete at this level.

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - Goose - 11-20-2017

I think that Love will play if he possibly can and the coaching staff will allow it. We won't know that for sure, and neither will ND, I expect, until Saturday at 1700. It may just be a matter of how much pain he is in and how much he can endure. I doubt that he would not play because we might need him against USC. It may make sense to lots of people, but I suspect not to Love.

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - teejers1 - 11-20-2017

I now tend to agree that Love will play if he can (different than my earlier hold-out assumption).  And while I think it will be a straightforward calculation for him - if he's good enough to give it a go, he will - there are other considerations that we fans can raise.

Bowl games.  My current belief is that there are only two paths to avoiding the Foster Farms Bowl:  beating SC in CCG; or beating Notre Dame, and hope that SC beats WSU in CCG.  And even in latter scenario, I'm not sure 9-3 Stanford will get the nod for the Holiday Bowl.

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - martyup - 11-20-2017

I'm not a doctor, but I'd guess that as long as no bones are broken he cannot really injure the ankle more seriously because it is heavily taped.  The tape will provide more support than any injured  ligaments or tendons might provide.  It may hurt like hell, but playing on it should not increase the injury.  Any doctors that can clarify this issue?

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - NDIrish - 11-21-2017

The availability of Love is brobdingnagian in this game, obviously.  From what i have seen, he is probably the best all around back in CFB, at least top 3.

Quick summary, if you have any speedy defensive ends, line the up against our LT and rush hard and fast, if he can get his hands on you in a pass block, hes pretty good, but he is sloooooooooowwww in pass rush.  The right side is pretty solid in pass blocking, but is still coming along in run blocking.  The receivers seem to have talent, but outside of claypool, have lacked any determination to catch the ball.  They wont lay out, reach for them and won't fight to get open.  Wimbush's numbers have been far from explosive, but i bet there are 3-4 drops a game for brobdingnagian games.

Defense is solid, but look for the middle of the field to be open.  They have to drop back to help out poor safety play and the MLB, morgan, is a great athlete, but lacks the football IQ to be great.

Obviously ND has lived and died on its run game.  Adams is a hard and smart runner.  He has been banged up and held in check the last couple weeks.  Not really sure where the mindset of this team is at right now.  3 weeks ago, i would have said this is a W, now not as sure.  Stanford always comes ready to go against ND.

How are things on your guys side?  weather looking good?

is there an app for this forum?

Thanks and good luck.

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - BostonCard - 11-21-2017

We have struggled against solid runners all year, so I am worried about Adams.  I think our best bet would be for us to get ahead early and have Kelly abandon a running game that is pulling off 5-10 yards every time Adams touches the ball.

It happened in our games against Oregon (they gained 276 yards on 6.4 yards per cary but only scored 7 points), Washington (135 yards on 4.1 ypc, but scoring 22), and Cal (155 yards on 5.5 ypc, but scoring only 14).

After listening to the press conference, I think he will play, as well. I also think the players think more of this rivalry than we older alumni do. I'm a little more sanguine about our bowl opportunities.

Yvonne, it also depends on the person. I have a very visceral hatred of all things Votre Dame. My father (a self-described recovering Catholic) raised me to believe "Cal is the Rival, U$C is Evil and the Irish are the Devil" (the school and fans, not the people of Ireland).

I am taking him to his first in-person game against the crying whyrish this weekend.

SUBuddha, I was treated well by the home N.otre Dame fans the two times I watched Stanford play in South Bend.  The Irish fans displayed fine midwestern hospitality and generosity.  Sort of the opposite of going to Berkeley for a game.  So please be a good host to the visitors.

But I am right there with you in my feelings about the Domers, the disproportionate attention they get from the media and the TV, conference and bowl rules written just for them (not to mention the Lizzie Seeberg and Declan Sullivan deaths).  The schadenfreude when Stanford beat N.otre Dame in 1990 was almost too much happiness, especially when Lou Holtz said "I'm one step from suicide" post game.  Here's hoping we see more red-faced disappointment from Brian Kelly on Saturday.

That was an extremely fun train ride back to Chicago and a GREAT night of celebration.  We, too, were actually quite impressed with the civility and kindness of the Noter Dame fans; especially in light of how disappointed they must have been.  That win was HUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEEEE!!!!

As for the rivalry, if it means a lot to the players, then that matters more than how much I care about it.

Re: Stanford-Notre_Dame - dabigv13 - 11-21-2017

I bet younger alums care less about the ND game than older alums. As an 06 grad, I still am annoyed about Ty running through the senior day celebration, but ND hasn't really been that great over the span I've been a fan, and I wouldn't mind if we replaced them on the schedule because of the scheduling conflicts we have to live with to accomodate their preferences. I'd much rather play kal last game every year,  and play SC some time besides mid September every year.

dropping ND would fix the latter but both Cal and Stanford have both said they have no interest in moving Big Game to the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
