Aha! That probably explains why she was unusually quiet for the UConn game. I wonder if she felt like she really wanted to play the OSU and UConn games and came back from the injury too quick? She seemed like her normal self for the OSU game (24 points on 11/22 shooting) but was much quieter than I expected for the UConn game. Part of that was UConn guarding her well, but she just didn't seem to have quite the same zip.
Fingers crossed she recovers quickly (but takes whatever time is necessary for recovery). We will absolutely need her for the Baylor and Tennessee games in December.

McPhee's absence really compounds our offensive woes, because when you think about it, we are starting an almost completely new and inexperienced lineup. With Brit out, Alanna is really our only consistent returning scoring threat from last year. Kaylee and Marta has a wealth of playing experience, but unfortunately neither of them are really offensive playmakers on their own. Marta tried driving and she did get to the FT line, but against a stronger interior defense, that's really not going to work. And when Alanna gets into foul trouble like she did last night, Tara doesn't have anyone really to turn to that she can rely on.
DiJonai seems ready to step up into that role, but she has to make better decisions, turning the ball over with errant passes and then trying to shoot her way out of a slump, where I thought she should have either driven or taken closer jump shots to regain some confidence, rather than launching long range shots.
The way we are playing and with Brit out, the best we can hope for is to get to finals break with wins against Bakersfield on Sunday and SF in early December, win our first round in Vegas, survive our second round and don't totally embarrass ourselves against Ohio State and Baylor. Hopefully, getting that break until mid-December will give Brit's ankle time to recover and heal, then we can finish non-conference play well and be more ready for the Pac-12 season.
The silver lining is that without Brit, the freshmen and sophomores are getting even more playing time. The hope is that they continue to grow and not make the same mistakes over and over again.

Before the game Tempie noted all the players who can shoot the three, and indicated that they "just needed to gain confidence in their shot."Â In other words, they are shooting threes just fine in practice, but doing it in a game is different and success will breed success.Â
Williams was one of the players she said could shoot the three, and yes indeed she was 1/3. The fact that she had 3 assists to just one turnover, playing in a turnover-soaked game, gives me hope that she could develop into a truly effective point guard sooner rather than later.
Dodson is the other frosh who seems to be progressing. She was 2/3 on her field goals, 1/2 on free throws, grabbed 3 rebounds, a block, and most importantly NO personal fouls in her 17 minutes. She did have 2 turnovers. But she is getting a lot of time and she seems to be making progress.
Tempie called Jerome more of a 4/3 and Moshkau more of a guard. Jerome keeps getting a lot of time but I'm not seeing much offensively out of her. With Alanna in foul trouble and Fingall injured, Jerome was a logical person to spend time in the rotation.Â
Moschkau is the hardest worker on the team, Tempie said, always working on her shot before and after practice, something "that will pay off in the long run." Well, tell you what. If Moschkau can hit 40% from beyond the arc, the "long run" could become the short run.
I so much want to see Anna Wilson succeed. Last year we saw her for a few short games and her three point shot looked awesome. This would be a good time to bring it back! She went 0/4 last night and looked to me to be rushing shots. Riverside was NOT an undersized team, and Wilson looked tiny out there.Â

I hope last night was an aberration then, because we looked nothing like a great long-range shooting team. It was just awful to see us miss so much.

On the roster, Anna is listed as an inch taller than Kiana and just an inch shorter than Romano. Did Kiana and Alexa seem similarly undersized?

Anna is very slender, and I think that makes her look smaller. No idea about exact heights.

This right. The posted heights are often exaggerated one way or the other, but this is what the official roster says about our guard heights:
Sniezek 5'8"
Wilson 5'9"
Romano 5'10"
Brewer 5'10"
Carrington 5'11"
McPhee 6'0"
Moschkau 6'1" (forward?)
Marta has muscle mass, probably developed in part from all those years playing soccer. Anna is indeed "very slender." The UCRiverside lineup was surprisingly big and Anna was usually matched up on players significantly taller and bigger. Â
That said, I saw a lot of three point shots that were poorly taken--often shot before a player really got squared up. So there is room to improve how the shots go up--it is not entirely a psychological matter of "confidence" but is partly just poor shot selection and hasty shooting. Then again, if you are confident in your shot you probably don't tend to rush it.Â

In other wBB news, UCLA upset Baylor 82-68 today. I'm not sure if that means the Bruins are finally putting it altogether with Canada, Billings, Burke, etc. I guess we'll see after we play Baylor and after UCLA plays UConn, which by the way, is missing Katie Lou. She injured her foot in the C.al game.

Spent a lot of time last night pondering the meaning of "Burn the Boats." Anyone know?

I'm not certain, but I think it may be a reference akin to win or die trying, there will be no retreat. See this:

Its a quote attributed to Sun Tzu.

Quote:When your army has crossed the border, you should burn your boats and bridges, in order to make it clear to everybody that you have no hankering after home.

My transcriptions of a few Tara quotes from the press conference.
https://soundcloud.com/gostanford/uc-riverside-tara-vanderveer-and-dijonai-carrington-111717
"Three point shooting was miserable. Maybe we caught it from the Warriors." She pointed out the Carrington, Wilson, and Romano are great three point shooters. "I have confidence in their shooting but we can depend on our defense, and defense and rebounding are more important to me." "We know we have good shooters on our team. Maybe it's just in the water."
"Now, we have to take care of the ball."Â She joked that she told Carrington NOT to earn a triple double with 10 turnovers to add to her double double of points and rebounding.Â
She and Carrington both discussed coming off the two losses and working on those things that they could control: effort, rebounding, etc. Neither seemed too down. "I'm really proud of our team's effort." They are sticking together and not looking for excuses. She singled out Johnson for praise too, but did not like the foul trouble on her and Smith.Â
After mentioning Carrington, Romano, "These are young people who are learning and adjusting to new roles and they are doing really well."
Carrington noted that it is taking them a while to learn the offense well enough to react without thinking, and the extra second they have to think about the next offensive move is the second that the defense uses to recover.Â
