Might UCF retain Walters via promotion?

Josh Heupel was just announced as the new UCF HC.

UCF has hired Missouri offensive coordinator Josh Heupel to take over as its next football coach.

Heupel immediately hired former UF interim coach Randy Shannon to be the Knights' defensive coordinator.

My dream hire would be Helfrich.

Todd Husak for OC! Or at least some sort of Offense Special Advisor so he can lend his perspective to our team instead of wasting it on the general public.

Husak might not want to coach, it's a much more demanding gig than the media.
[/quote]

Spilled my coffee when I read your last line. Maybe for Husak's job in the booth. Maybe for the Wilners and the Gilmores. But they ain't among the thousands of worker bees in what you call The Media. Have you been shot at while working? Have you lugged gear in the jungle, up mountains and in enemy controlled territory to get a story? Have you been clubbed by police, donned a gas mask and worked in no man's land during a political riot? Have you been harassed by a cult, kidnapped or stowed away in a van in the Manila slums with a pistol pointed at you? Have you been targeted by a motorcycle club or been in a barfight in Dumbass Montana just because you're a journalist? Journalists are getting killed every day on our planet, especially just over our southern border.

And a coach's life is tough because he has to win? And they all make money and there is always another job or a golden parachute to move on to.

Yeah Fox News sucks and MSNBC sucks and the NYT is beginning to suck. Corporate "Media." The reporters, the still girls and guys and the news crews are the heart and soul and they are busting their ass and not making a lot of cash doing it. And most do it without an agenda. God bless them.

Re: Bloomgren to Rice? - teejers1 - 12-05-2017

Nice post, Phogge.

Perhaps the youth of today don't have the same understanding of what a journalist in main media is . . . and who can blame them, given the way most Americans get their news today?

P.S.  Husak as OC would be an intriguing/exciting selection.  Have no idea if Shaw has the moxie to do that, or just promote from within.

That's my fear.

Re: Bloomgren to Rice? - Leftcoast - 12-05-2017

Football play-by-play guys on the other hand spend very little time on the front lines of real shooting wars unless you think hazard pay is needed when interviewing the losing coach after Big Game.

It's clear which media job Stupac was referring to and no slight was intended.

Thanks TC.  Here's some more info.

That being said, there's a bit of a difference between reporting from a war zone and providing color commentary for a football game.  AND/BUT what we hear in the booth is just the tip of the iceberg of what these guys have to do.

I would be very surprised, and very angry. I don't expect Shaw to promote someone from a lower rung job. I expect him to hire someone with previous OC experience. I want him to go find the Duane Akina of OC's but that's probably unrealistic.

I'm happy for Coach Bloomgren and I'm happy for Stanford. Shaw has an opportunity now to go hire someone with a fresh perspective on our offense which has been mercurial over the last few years, and Bloomgren gets to go to a program without much downside and significant upside.

Re: Bloomgren to Rice? - TreesAndBirds - 12-05-2017

I suspect Rice admin thought Bloomgren a good fit because he understands recruiting for a school that puts academics first, and that resonates with their alums also. And I assume Bloomgren  really enjoys working with that type of player. A nice addition to Shaw's coaching tree.

Re: Bloomgren to Rice? - gocard14 - 12-05-2017

I dont know who the most highly regarded Oline coaches are, but I imagine that Stanford is a plum job for most of them given our style and recruiting.

As for OC, it’s a tougher call. I would prefer that Shaw bring in someone with new ideas to mesh with our offense a la Troy Walters or Helfrich, but doubt we could get either.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see an NFL name like Bill Lazor (interim OC in Cincinnati who will likely soon be jobless), Mike Munchack (Steelers Oline coach, former head coach), or John Defillipo (QB coach in philly, former browns and SJ state OC)

Re: Bloomgren to Rice? - Phogge - 12-05-2017

Perhaps I should have clarified. But the lump word "Media" is misunderstood. Part of the problem is that photo journalists, beat reporters and your average news crew (one man bands locally, camera and sound at the network level at least at CBS) have so very few advocating for them. The work can be dangerous, absolutely physically numbing and often under appreciated from the lacquered correspondents who fly in for a couple of interviews. So when I read that media isn't as difficult as coaching the many hairs on my back stand up.

All I've heard about Husack has been positive. I can tell you that prepping for an on air gig or spending twelve hours packing gear for a war zone is pretty demanding. As is the acid in your gut questioning WTF you are going to do next.

The really rough football coaching jobs are at the HS level where in the inner city a coach may have 16 or 17 players. A college coordinator job? Piece of cake in comparison.

Why would Walters not want to come home to Stanford?

Regardless of who is hired, I am interested to see if the O line splits remain the same in the short yardage package. In some cases I like it, but penetration from the edges needs to be addressed

Re: Bloomgren to Rice? - Spiny_Norman - 12-05-2017

Bloomgren is going to a another school with a non-traditional band. The Marching Owl Band (MOB) show when Todd Graham left Rice for Tulsa is a bitter, biting classic.

Re: Bloomgren to Rice? - BobK - 12-05-2017

Husak is not full time media. He has a full time job.  Which he may well enjoy.

My bad, BobK. I'd assumed that he came with Harbaugh, but you know what happens when we assume...

Now fixed.

Perhaps he is under consideration as a head coach somewhere.

If Bloomgren gets the Rice job, he will be the fourth Shaw assistant to eventually become a head coach elsewhere, after Derek Mason, Brian Polian, and Mike Sanford.

Yeah, seriously. Who was it earlier that was complaining that people on this board have thin skin? Sheesh.
