Congratulations Bryce! (Now please come back next year...!)

I have assumed most of the year that this was his last year. But I've been feeling the last few weeks that he may pull an Andrew Luck...

+1.  I think Nan3cy is correct.

Re: AP All-America Team - FarmBoy - 12-13-2017

5 of Stanford's 10 unanimous selections happened during Shaw's tenure:
2017 · Bryce Love
2015 · Joshua Garnett
2013 · David Yankey
2012 · Zach Ertz
2011 · David DeCastro
2009 · Toby Gerhart
1982 · John Elway
1980 · Ken Margerum
1951 · Bill McColl
1935 · Bobby Grayson

I am very surprised that Nevers and Plunkett and Walters were not unanimous.

Not that Luck wasn't? It seems like it's hard to get a QB/RB to be unanimous.

Considering he lost the hman to two other quarterbacks, it's not a surprise he wasn't a unanimous. Wiki doesn't even show him as consensus.

No. If you recall, he lost the Big One to two other quarterbacks, which would suggest they would be voted to at least some of the teams ahead of him. Makes good sense to me.

OTOH, Nevers and Plunkett and Walters won awards for being the best at their position in their respective years.

Reflecting on the unanimity of Bryce's AA status, I'm wondering if any of the H award votes had the stupidity to leave him off their ballots -- as, it was reported, happened to Christian two years ago. Is there any way to kick a H voter off the roles for being an idiot?? (We know that being a felon is not disqualifying.)

short answer many did not vote for him

Mayfield had 847 total people vote for him Bryce Love only 729

According to a CNN article I found, there are 929 total votes cast for the Voldemort (870 journalists, 58 former Voldemort winners, 1 fan vote). Voters can select 3 candidates. Based on the picture taken of teh final tally for teh top 10, it appears Love received 75 1st, 421 2nd and 233 3rd. Thus, he was on 729 total ballots (78%). Mayfield was on 847 and Jackson was on 502. I doubt there was a concerted effort to leave Love off ballots to help Mayfield. Everyone knew he was going to win regardless of whether Love was on a ballot or not. People who left him off their ballot probably just didn't rank him in the top 3 of a very subjective contest.

Re: AP All-America Team - Velodoc - 12-13-2017

Where's the love for Jake Bailey.

IMO, his year was incredibly consistent...with long, high hang-time punts when needed and incredibly consistent accuracy to drop punts into 0-10 yard line.  2 slight shanks as I recall.

I think there plenty of times that Jake kept us in games.

I don't think a punter could have a better year.

And then there are his non-returned kick %... > 90%?

+ whatever it takes. Bailey had a remarkable year. Read it here, Jake.

Jake Bailey certainly punted well.
If you want to make a case for him, at the least you have to compare him to the three guys who made AA.

Dickson, Texas
Townsend, Florida
Wisnowsky, Utah

I cannot do this. I didn't watch these guys.

Dickson and Townsend were #1 and #2 in the country in average yards per punt at 48.4 and 47.6.
Bailey was #8 at 44.6.
Wisnowsky was #16 at 44.2.
That's obviously a pretty limited way to judge a punter, but it's all I got.
Anyone got more?

Let's be honest, it's probably all the voters have too.  Given the way most of these awards go I highly doubt any of them are watching game footage from several dozen punters to make their choice.

I would at least like to think that the voters have at least moderately more detailed stats: things like punts downed inside the 20, number of punts not returned, etc.

But, more likely you are correct.

By that gross yds/punt measure, I wouldn't necessarily make the case that the #8 guy should have made AA. But maybe the guy at Tennessee (#3 in yds/punt at 47.47) could be outraged at Wisnowsky (#16 at 44.24).

Nevers, Plunkett, and Walters were all consensus All Americans.

Nevers was not unanimous in 1925 because the United Press chose Jacob Slagle of Princeton at FB, and the Football Writers didn't choose a fullback (they picked four halfbacks).

Plunkett was not unanimous in 1970 because the AP chose Joe Theismann of Notre.Dame as the 1st team QB.

Walters was not unanimous in 1999 because the AFCA (football coaches) chose Peter Warrick of Florida St. and Dennis Northcutt of Arizona as the WRs.

This is awesome, Terry. Thanks!

I guess I am surprised someone could win the H-Award or the Biletnikoff (or be Ernie Nevers) and not be chosen for an AA team, but these things are highly subjective...
