Re: WBB: UCLA at Stanford 5:30 Pacific - BostonCard - 12-29-2017

74-63 with under a half minute left.  Best win of the season by far, though as CompSci noted, heavily aided by UCLA not playing well.  Still, hopefully a sign of things to come.

And who knows, Stanford may have had something to do with UCLA not playing well...

Re: WBB: UCLA at Stanford 5:30 Pacific - TheFarm07 - 12-29-2017

We won 76-65; a much needed victory to start conference play against a ranked UCLA team.

Brit in her 2 games back showed how much we sorely missed her while she was out. She is fast becoming the Chiney of the '12-'13 team on this year's squad I feel like, but I am hopeful we have a more productive supporting cast around her.

Including Fingall, who was on fire from the high post, knocking down FT jumpers cleanly, which is great to see.

Twenty turnovers including some when the game was still in doubt is frustrating. As the announcers pointed out, do not make it easier for the pressing team to trap and force a turnover by running along the sidelines and then picking up the ball, you're removing one dimension of the court for you to get out of trouble.

Though we were mediocre from the FT line, we did make the critical ones down the stretch which was good to see.

We outrebounded UCLA 48-32, though they did have 16 o-boards. That coupled with our 20 turnovers led to 22(!) more shot opportunities for the Bruins and why we only won by 11 despite shooting nearly 20 percentage points better than they did.

pretty scary at times with only 1 ball handler on the court for us against press - that led to quite a few to's

To an extent, of course you are right, though a lot of the UCLA mistakes that I saw were of the unforced kind.  UCLA shot 31% for the game, and a lot of those misses were not because they were well-defended.  Canada was an uncharacteristic 7/28 (ouch!).  Had they shot a merely below average 39% from the field, they would have made 6 more shots and won the game.

That being said, I don't want to dwell too much on that, because we had our own problems with unforced mistakes (20 turnovers!), and in the end we did what we had to do when it counted, taking a 2-pt 3rd quarter lead and scoring 28 in the fourth quarter to win comfortably.

We just looked half a step slower and playing the game a move or two behind UCLA sometimes when we were on offense. Maybe it was largely Canada and then pressing when they were trying to climb back from a deficit later in the game, but the 5 second violation inbounding and the picked off passes were frustrating to watch, as if we were wanting them to play down to our speed

She also made a crazy shot to beat the clock at one point, a sort of hook heave from near the top of the key. It was her night for sure. Hope she has a lot more like it.

Just watched the DVR. That was fun, despite frustrating miscues. May we have many more games like this!
