Yes. I agree this is not good. We've talked about the reasons why we have smaller classes, but that means that you have to spread out your needs across these small classes. In other words, it's fine that our recruiting classes are not big, and that can even be an advantage, but it means that you have to account for positional needs all the time, every year. For us, we need to get quality OL every year, and we didn't get much this year. And I, too, am worried about ILB. In a 3-4, having at least one stud athletic ILB is so, so critical.

Each year, it seems that the South is the mecca for talent. Is that really the case? Thoughts? Theories? Does Jimmy the Greek's inebriated hypothesis all those years ago actually hold water?
The South being a mecca for talent isn't just recruiting hype, it is borne out by the numbers of FBS starters, FBS All Americans, NFL draftees, NFL players, etc. Probably a number of contributing factors, but primarily due to football in the south being so culturally significant and players getting involved in organized football with coaching from a very young age.

By all objective measurements--as objective as recruiting gets--this is not a good Stanford recruiting class.Â
It's too small. We will have five or six unfilled scholarships.
We signed only one offensive lineman, which means we have only two offensive linemen in the last two classes.Â
We badly lagged our rivals USC, UW, Notre Dame, Oregon and UCLA.
Unless an unusual number of these class's opals turn out to be diamonds, this is a setback. If the press asks the obvious questions, today's press conference with Shaw could be interesting. He'd better bring lipstick.

HS football..
IMO, it is all about emphasis and resources. Both are lacking in California. Both are high priority in Texas and the South. One can argue whether it is right or wrong to emphasize/invest. However, I do not see anything that will change the dynamics in the foreseeable future.Â

Because Little and Sarell burned their red shirts, they effectively moved into the OL class with Hamilton and Hattis that runs out of eligibility after the 2020 season. And we shouldn't count on Little for 2020, either. He's a top five draft pick if he stays healthy.

It's less a matter of burnt redshirts, but of the fact that there is a high probability that Little will only be here through 2019 and the medium probability that Sarell will not.
Because players often shift within classes it is frequently more useful to base classes not on when players enroll but rather when they are anticipated to leave. Alternatively, you can look at two-year classes to smooth out ups and downs, and movement between classes. As pointed out, the two-year 2017/2018 combo got us three OLinemen; we need five. WE should probably aim for 5 ± 1 for 2019, to give us 6 over the 2018/2019 pair of classes.
