If Costello is out for spring ball, alternative theory is that Chryst agreed to practice this spring with the team even though he is transferring this summer. He can't transfer until he graduates so he may need to be on campus anyway this spring so why not develop his skills with Stanford and enable Stanford to run a practice with a real offense.

If he is healthy enough to do summer drills, he would likely be in good enough physical shape to play by the start of the season. Whether he would enough to play the position properly is another matter. I would have said whether he had learned enough to beat out Costello would still be at issue, but Mr. TITTLE raises the specter of there being nothing to beat out.
