We were up 68-39 before a final Utes flury against our deep bench. We win 70-49. Held them under 50.

You gotta love Nadia's stat line. 10pts, 6reb, 2blk, 2stl. Pretty darn good outing for her. Marta 3-3 from downtown. What's still worrying is how cold Carrington can get some games.Â

That was a pretty good effort. Got the big lead and cruised without too much drama. Could have been a bit cleaner but can't complain. Nice to see Nadia have such a good game. Love that Marta is now looking for her threes a bit. When she scores a little, especially threes, I feel it changes the whole dynamic of the offense.Â

It was also good to see Kaylee making some aggressive plays to score on offense. Overall, our post play seems to have improved.

I have the impression that the team has mostly cleaned up the problems that was frustrating us (and I'm sure the coaches & players) and has really started to work hard on the deficiencies that should be corrected for a deep run. Tonight, we had the ball in the offensive end and Marta looked over to Tara. Moments later, the ball went into Kaylee who turned it into a basket. I certainly felt that Tara had ordered that play.
It is too bad the team wasn't in this position in the pre-season to have the cushion to allow them to focus on the deficiencies.

As much as I like to see Fingall have a good game, I am still wondering about Smith with 13 minutes and only 2 fouls. These are her point totals over the last 4 weekends:
Utah: 8
Oregon: 15
OSU: 11
Arizona: 15
ASU: 8
UCLA: 5
USC: 9
This does not measure up to the Smith who scored 33 over the top of Mavunga, or even the Smith who was consistently scoring in the upper teens as we made our way through the NCAAs last last season. Still, her role this year has increased. Â
Last year she averaged only 19 minutes, started only 3 games, shot 47% and 32% from three, and averaged 9.1 ppg.Â
This year she averages 28 minutes, started all 25 games, shoots 50% and 31% from three, and averages 13 ppg.Â
I wouldn't say I'm worried, more curious as to her role. She has been doing pretty well with her treys of late and has been found playing the 3 from time to time too. But I think at the beginning of the season--with McCall just having graduated and Smith dominating in the loss at Ohio State, many of us would have predicted our offense would be built around her more than around McPhee.

I just watched the press conference--they are always available on the Stanford facebook page, by the way, and Tara brought Nadia out. Very high praise of Nadia's game, as deserved. I'm inclined to think she just wanted to give Nadia a lot of minutes because she was playing so well, and might as well rest Alanna.
The highlights feature Johnson and Dodson rather than Fingall, for some reason:

Alanna seems pretty inconsistent this year both offensively and defensively.
Maybe its matchups but she seemed more tentative last night than up in Oregon. Her rebounding was tenacious in Oregon but not so much last night.
