Fisk isn't on scholarship? I thought Boles was a walk-on, didn't know Fisk was.

DWP and Swann are going to be in the good category. The question is can Jackson pick up his game? If he can. the starting DL could be dare I say a strength of the defense.

It's amazing how reliant this defense is going to be on underclassmen up-front, and that includes Gabe Reid as an OLB as "the best pass rusher" during Spring so far.  Also wouldn't rule out Booker, A. Fox, or Umerah getting some reps this season in limited roles.

Makes you wonder if it makes sense for Stanford to bring in guys as talented as Solomon Thomas out of high school. Because Thomas would be a Senior this season if he wasn't so good so early.  So too would Phillips if he played out his eligibility. Not saying it's better to have lesser talented players per se, but at this time of year, I think about Virginia in hoops, as a school that doesn't bring in guys who will leave exceptionally early, and look at them.

Can’t agree, with respect. The five star guys should at least get some freshman game reps even if they are not “Shawready.” There is very little chance that they will be on campus for five years.

And the more five stars that come should be a major recruiting pitch. Another reason is the Phillips injury. With all the major injuries that can kayo a players season you have a built in year of eligibility for those hurt in any season if they play as frosh (Phillips).

Guys are going down this season like any season. Sh*t happens. Some frosh are going to have to play.

Don't bother recruiting a guy like Solomon Thomas, who could do the academic work, because why again?

I'm playing devil's advocate here.  Perhaps there are parallels to what Virgina has done in hoops - not bringing in 1-2 year guys - that Stanford can follow in football.  I don't know, just throwing it out for discussion.

I think it is close to impossible to anticipate when/if a player will chose to leave school early. Lots of "can't miss" guys don't make it at all, let alone leave early for the draft. Other guys perform as expected, or better than expected, and do leave. Trying to make any decision about a player based on when they might leave school is so error-prone that it is pointless to try. Deciding not to recruit a guy because he may leave early is just not wise. We should all hope that we have players who are good enough to leave early, and greatly rejoice when/if they stay for 4 years.

Good one Goose.  Did we really know Davis and Watkins were going to leave early ?😀😀

Re: Players to watch during Spring Practice - CowboyIndian - 03-13-2018

If we had lost the Sun Bowl or Thomas hadn’t played, he might well have been here for last season. Pretty small hinge of fate.

Basketball is a lot more predictable than football in that regard, and in the worst case scenario in football you still get up to three years of contributions from a player (though one fewer if you redshirt him).  In basketball one-and-done is a legitimate possibility.
