Turnovers, matador defense, poor FT shooting with a side of long 3 point shots by non-3 point shooters was the recipe for the first half of the game.
... Everything was going well until it stopped going well. We hit a brick wall. Turnovers, missed shots, more missed FTs, and placing a red carpet in the paint once again was how BYU made their comeback in the last minute of the game.
Yep.
The TOs were horrendous in the first half (13) but got much better in the second (3).
However, one of those three was during the mad scramble at the end.
With 0:36 to go, we had a 10 point lead, one FT awaiting, and the ESPN game tracker said we had a 99.9% chance of winning.
25 seconds later we are up by only 2 and ESPN now says 69% chance.
[Actually, 69% might have been 2 seconds later when BYU had the ball back, down 3.]
That would have been amusing if it wasn't giving me a heart attack.

FT%, holy crap. That was bad, over the last minute of game time. Oh for the days of 90%+ FT% in the Mike Montgomery era...

Did anyone else hate the new rule changes as much as me? If you enjoy missed 3-pointers, teams rebounding their own missed FTs, elimination of fouling as a strategy to get back in the game (uh, against good FT shooting teams anyway), and more commercials, then these new rules are for you!
Stupid NCAA.

Aren't these just experimental?

Well, based upon my own personal preferences ...
tougher 3 point shot = good
wider lane = indifferent to good
elimination of fouling as a strategy = good (though new rules a small effect here)
more commercials = bad
But, it's pretty hard to ask teams to suddenly adjust to new rules at the end of a season.
Of course, it's only the NIT, so as good a place to experiment as any.

Why is harder 3-point shooting good? A couple of years ago, people were all worried that D-I scoring was down and the games were plodding because of overly physical defense. So they added the restricted area under the basket and started calling more defensive fouls. Now they want to take the game in the opposite direction by making 3-point shooting harder. I couldn't find the overall numbers, but it looks like the median 3-point % by team is around 34.7%. Median 2-point % is just under 50%. So, basically 3-pointers and 2-pointers have similar net rates of points per shot. Why mess with that?

Well, it's purely personal preference.
I think there is too much standing around on offense and chucking up threes - but there is nothing objective to that statement.

Play OKLA and the Trae Young show next.
Nope, they are in the tourney. (Not that they should be since they were terrible down the stretch.)
We play Oklahoma State, who actually BEAT the Trae Young show twice.

Speaking of which...Oklahoma lost to Rhode Island today in the first round.
The rest of the team must be pathetic if Trae Young and his army of ESPN fanboys couldn't carry it.

Oklahoma lost its mojo in the later part of conference play. Their downward trend did not reverse course, it seems.

Seemed like there were 3 scheduled breaks per half instead of the usual 4, but they seemed longer than the usual ones.

There were two per quarter, then the quarter break. Felt like under 6 minutes, then under 2?
So 5 TV timeouts with quarters, vs 4 with halves.
