RE: Draft Day - Ronnietrader - 04-27-2018

I wonder if some teams passed on him because of his brother and his activism. Rumors out it came down to him and the Texas tackle for Cowboys pick at 50.

RE: Draft Day - BostonCard - 04-27-2018

Harrison Phillips goes to the Buffalo Bills with the 32nd pick of the 3rd round.

RE: Draft Day - PalmTree - 04-27-2018

....& Harrison to the Bills as the 96th pick, in a somewhat touching announcement by a Buffalo fan undergoing cancer treatments. Go get 'em, Harry!

Sorry BC - you beat me on the news...still fumble fingering my way through this new site....& I'm now a "Dolly"....WTF happened?!?!?

Not a problem.

You can set your own "User Title" if you go to "User CP" -> "Edit Profile"; on the right hand side, type whatever you want into "New Usetitle". I had reverted to "Frosh", so I changed it.

McShay had it correct. The “experts” thought Reid gave up too many big plays.

RE: Draft Day - cardcrimson - 04-27-2018

Haven't been closely following the draft, but I'm hoping someone can explain this gem from SI:

"37. Indianapolis Colts—G Braden Smith

Drafting a once-in-a-generation guard like Quenton Nelson in the first round was befuddling given Indianapolis’s endless list of needs on defense. (In terms of three-down players, every position except Malik Hooker’s free-safety spot and Quincy Wilson’s corner spot could use an upgrade.) Taking another guard, despite having Jack Mewhort on the roster? Perplexing beyond comprehension. Either Mewhort or Smith will move to right tackle. Theoretically, Andrew Luck will be better protected than ever, but the best way to protect Luck is to install more quick-strike passes, not hope his new blockers can keep him clean.

GRADE: D-"

So, a quality oline is not important if the team just called quick passing plays. Stunning insights from Sports Illustrated.

RE: Draft Day - fullmetal - 04-28-2018

That's some embarrassingly bad armchair-GMing from SI.com. Luck needs all the OL he can get to score points, sustain drives, and keep the Colts defense off the field and energized.

Justin Reid gets to team up with Honey Badger in the defensive backfield...and Brennan Scarlett.

Horrible Harry and Trent Matthews (talents from two generations of Stanford Football) will be in trenches side-by-side.

Here's to 2018.

RE: Draft Day - magnus - 04-28-2018

Dalton Schultz to the Cowboys with pick #137.
With Witten retiring, he's got a great opportunity.

I think you mean Trent Murphy........

Nah man, he meant Trent Matthews, assistant DB coach at Colorado State.

Brings back shades of an author who "bleeds Stanford" doing a write-up about our 2016 signing class including "Devery Henderson" (you know, the former New Orleans Saints receiver) and new coach "Diron Robinson" (there's nobody well-known enough named that for me to make a snarky comment about a guy who is clearly not our DL coach).

So when is Fenton Weeks getting picked?

RE: Draft Day - Mick - 04-28-2018

Dalton Schultz was selected in the fourth round of the draft, with the 137th overall pick. Lucky team was the Dallas Cowboys. Witten is retiring , so Dalton fills a need.

Cowboys seem pretty happy:

RE: Draft Day - 82lsju - 04-28-2018

Two-time team captain Peter Kalambayi was selected by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Kalambayi was the 40th pick of the sixth round and 214th overall.

Peter was my favorite Stanford player in 2014, his first year as a starter.  However, he seemed to lose some of his explosiveness after that, maybe due to injury?  Anyway, I  hope he has a decent pro career.

RE: Draft Day - PVTree - 04-28-2018

3 players I thought were gonna get drafted, but weren't :
-Mata'afa (WSU)
-Adams (USB)
-Meeks (Nerd Nation)

RE: Draft Day - stupac2 - 04-28-2018

I wonder if Meeks now wishes he had stayed in school.

Though I think he feels insulted that he was not drafted, Meeks probably now likes the option of signing with whatever team he wants as an UDFA, which he certainly will. He won't make much on his first contract, but I am sure that Meeks believes in himself enough that he thinks he'll make his way to that lucrative second contract. Now, if he indeed has the talent to make it as an NFLer, second contract or no, remains to be seen. I am sure he's been knocked for being on the slower side, and not having a great junior season. In addition, coaches and GMs often look at their draft picks and returners a lot more closely than UDFAs when determining roster spots and depth chart. My gut tells me he'll make a team, but he may be a special teams player unless and until he gets a shot in the field. it will take the right team and coach, and now he has the option of choosing that, with tons of input, too, given his family and college coaches. We'll see!

RE: Draft Day - OutsiderFan - 04-28-2018

Meeks signed as a UFA with Jacksonville Jaguars.

RE: Draft Day - terry - 04-28-2018

Meeks should have stayed in school.

RE: Draft Day - OutsiderFan - 04-28-2018

I disagree Meeks should have stayed for his Senior season. If he isn't a good enough athlete to be drafted after essentially 3 years as a starter, he certainly isn't going to be after a 4th year. If he plays another year, he risks injury that could keep him from even being a UFA next season. I don't personally think he would be drafted any higher in 2019 than 2018, so why not find out if you really can compete for a job in the NFL when you are at the peak of your athletic ability?

The only possible thing Meeks could have done to enhance his NFL draft status in 2019 IMO, would be to play a year as the starting Free Safety for Stanford in 2018 and author a great highlight reel in the process.

+1.  I thought Meeks had the ability of a mid-range prospect.  He id some very good things this past year (career high in tackles, by a margin), but I'll bet a good year with INTs and passes defended would have made him a more attractive prospect.

According to ESPN, he was the 24th best safety.  Three lesser lights were selected in front of Meeks, including the Niners' sixth round pick of Marcell Harris, the 45th best safety.  There were six safeties with better numbers ahead of Meeks that were also not selected.
