FWIW, in terms of the ranking discussion, S&P+ is an outlier right now.
Sagarin: #11
ESPN FPI: #10
The Power Rank: #13
FEI: #9
So a pretty consistent band except for S&P+.

But Stanford is really the only team to have played a legit second game.
Still, there is simply too little data to go by. I mean, just because Alabama hasn't beaten a top-25 team doesn't mean they aren't capable of.
I suspect you are correct that at the moment Stanford has the strongest record in the country (though I haven't checked - and SDSU was losing last weekend to Sac State entering the fourth quarter). You are certainly correct that does not mean they are the best team.
An interesting sidelight will be to see what Mr. Wilner does with his AP ballot. He makes a big point of saying he tries to base his ballot exclusively* on team's actual record rather than how good he might think they are - so presumably should have Stanford at or near the top.
* He does put in the caveat that at the very beginning of the season this is not possible. But he also says he tries to switch over to a results-only evaluation as soon as possible - and as much as possible at any time.

Wilner has us at #10, saying "Stanford and Georgia move up as a result of their results"
Hist top 10:
1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Auburn
4. Oklahoma
5. Notre Dame
6. LSU
7. Georgia
8. Washington
9. Wisconsin
10. Stanford
In his defense, all four of the teams I mentioned (LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and Stanford) are in his top-10, but he has Georgia and Stanford lower than the AP as a whole, and LSU and Auburn higher.

Wilner slotted us as #7, a rise of 4 spots. I don't really think we should have risen much. Yes, it was a win over a ranked team on the road, and that counts for something. But we were two fluke plays from the game being 38 - 21 Oregon in regulation instead of 38-31 Stanford in OT. That result would have dropped us about a half-dozen spots.

He leaves Oregon at 12, which strikes me as high, and he has Cal at 17.

Sagarin: Stanford v Notre Dame -
muiron - 09-23-2018
Sagarin has Stanford at Notre Dame as an exact, two decimal places, tie!
He has us at 85.68 and them at 82.98 with home field advantage worth 2.70.
I'm a real Sagarin follower and I don't remember ever seeing a tie in any game I looked at (all of ours and the 10 or so a week on the Boot Pool for the last umpteen years.
