Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 09-23-2011

A really terrific in depth piece - video and story - on Barry J Sanders and his mom by Jenni Carlson on the Oklahoman series Friday Night Lights, entitled, "Raising Barry Sanders - Meet the single mother who raised one of Oklahoma high school football's singular talents and individuals."(Link to Article)

Tight family. Really great mom. He's a reflection of her. I hope she has had or will have a chance to visit Stanford and meet with David Shaw and Andrew Luck and Company. I think it will be a great next chapter in the story.

I'm really liking our chances.

Re: Barry J Sanders - StannyBoy - 09-23-2011

he's going to be in town on his official visit for the UCLA game.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 10-04-2011

Barry J Sanders was the first player selected/announced for the Army All-American Game set for Jan. 7th in San Antonio. Quite an honor.

Here is a video interview from the local TV station: (Link)

Here is so articulate, down-to-earth, humble, etc. He "sounds" like a Stanford athlete already.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 10-04-2011

So earlier I pointed out that "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell was in the backfield with Barry Sanders at Detroit when he had his record-setting year, probably making many of the blocks for Barry. Well I just heard that when TD Vardell was at Stanford running over defenses, a WR named David Shaw was playing at Stanford. Barry was at Stanford this weekend for the UCLA game with his son during this official visit. I have to believe that connection has been made.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Treebound - 10-04-2011

Great finding Griffin.  I had no idea Touchdown Tommy and Barry Sr played together.  I'm sure that Shaw, Condi and company had the red carpet rolled out and the team came through quite nicely.  Who hosted him, Stepfan?    We still have a number of top recruits on the board and if things close well, might we see Stanford's first Top 10 class?  I would love to see Barry running behind a number of these great OL recruits!

Re: Barry J Sanders - terry - 10-05-2011

Barry Sanders played with several Stanford guys on the Lions -- Tommy Vardell, Glyn Milburn, Kevin Scott.

Re: Barry J Sanders - fullmetal - 10-05-2011

Find those alumni email addresses and have them ring up their old teammate with words of advice ;)

Re: Barry J Sanders - Treebound - 10-05-2011

Terry,
Is that Kevin Scott the running back from '86/'87 (San Diego Chargers and Dallas) or is that Kevin Scott the db from the early '90's?

Re: Barry J Sanders - terry - 10-05-2011

The Kevin Scott who played with Barry Sanders in Detroit was Kevin T. Scott, the DB who played at Stanford in 1987-90, not Kevin R. Scott, the RB who played at Stanford in 1983-86.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Farm93 - 10-05-2011

Honestly, I would have thought recruiting would have been stronger, earlier this year.

The recruiting boards have a lot of great potential recruits, but a few more commits would be nice.  The UCLA game was pretty much as good as it gets for Stanford.  The game had great weather, decent media coverage, an in-conference rival, a creative offensive scheme, a meaningful honorary captain, a sell-out crowd, a student body giddy with excitement, and a convincing win by a calm, young coach.

It really does not get better here at Stanford, and I thought we might see a verbal or two after that game.

Re: Barry J Sanders - yvonne - 10-05-2011

Most of the guys still on the board are the kind who will announce at an all star game.

Re: Barry J Sanders - StannyBoy - 10-06-2011

I think a lot of the remaining recruits are just waiting to get admitted/retake their SAT/ACT. And judging by Shittu's tweet from last weekend he didnt get close to what he needed on his retake. He's a prime example of committing too early. It is also possible Shaw is putting less pressure to commit early as opposed to Harbaugh.

Re: Barry J Sanders - washingtonismoney - 10-06-2011

I think it's a Pac-12 thing. Our 13 commits puts us right at the median for the conference. Meanwhile, our average star rating puts us in third for the conference. Hopefully we can cash in on our recruiting opportunity this year--with UCLA down, USC limited scholarships, and Oregon under investigation, there's a large open space at the top of the conference that we might as well fill.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Treebound - 10-06-2011

Thanks Terry,
One correction for you:  Kevin B. Scott was the running back from 1983 (redshirt season 82/83) - 1987.  He was my room mate which is why I was checking with you.  I was going to ping him on this one!

This was the weekend for taking the test. Do students receive their scores instantly?

Also, when he tweeted that he "messed up," someone replied that he always thought that.

Re: Barry J Sanders - yvonne - 10-06-2011

I just looked it up. Oct 1 SAT scores will be available to students on Oct. 20. The #fml was his gut reaction.

Thanks for the correction. The media guide has Kevin B. Scott's middle initial wrong. I will make sure it is fixed next year.
