RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 29 straight wins, advances to NCAA quarters - d4cohn - 12-08-2018

Stanford really struggling so far. Down a set, and down 4 in Set #2.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 29 straight wins, advances to NCAA quarters - Griffins78 - 12-08-2018

Our serving hasn’t been tough and they’re passing incredibly well while we’ve had a lot of difficulty passing

Finally, we serve well and win the set. Crowd is loud and urging the team on.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 29 straight wins, advances to NCAA quarters - CompSci87 - 12-08-2018

Stanford up 10-5 in set 3, PSU timeout.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 29 straight wins, advances to NCAA quarters - winflop - 12-08-2018

Stanford takes third set leads 2-1. They looked awful in the first set and a good part of the second set, but rallied to win the second and really haven't looked back. Plummer has 20 kills through 3 sets and is also getting it done on defense with at least a couple solo roofs.

UDPATE: AND THEY WRAP IT UP! Another dominating set in the 4th 25-16. On to the Final Four and an opportunity for revenge against the ONLY team to beat them all year.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 29 straight wins, advances to NCAA quarters - d4cohn - 12-08-2018

Stanford pulls away to make the Final Four for the third consecutive year. All right now, as the slide against Penn State in the NCAA tournament is finally over after 21 years.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 29 straight wins, advances to NCAA quarters - M T - 12-08-2018

Sometimes it seems this Stanford team has to get its nose bloodied before it starts to fight.
The crowd was also quiet until pretty late in the second set.

Congratulations to the team, coach, and staff!

Did the cheerleaders and the Dollies take the night off?
Penn State's cheerleaders were there.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 30 straight wins, advances to NCAA semis - Griffins78 - 12-08-2018

Really felt we were nervous and played tight. It took the second set win to finally get back into their groove and play more relaxed, loose, and fun.

The cheerleaders haven't been to many (or any) games. The band has been great all year - a testament to the Hambly's engaging the band before the season and making them an important part of the team/season.

The Dollies were not there tonight, perhaps because last night was the worst performance we've ever seen by any Dollies ever. It was embarrasing.

Back to the awesome win. Plummer was just fantastic. Back row , hitting just carried the team. I though McClure would have a tough game against the Penn State block but she was great.

I have been to several thousand athletic events and this was as exciting as any I have ever been to. To turnaround Stanford did was just incredible .

It was indeed a great atmosphere in Maples tonight.

Stanford looked outclassed in the first set and half of the second. I'd love for someone more knowledgeable than me describe any tactical adjustments the team might have made that contributed to the dramatic improvement in performance. In any event, it was fun to watch.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 30 straight wins, advances to NCAA semis - pefloresjr - 12-09-2018

I was at Maples tonight and it was great fun.  I'm no expert but here are my impressions.  We were definitely playing nervous to start the match.  I thought our service errors were clear signs of nervousness.  Also, the timing and height of the sets for our kill attempts were definitely off early in the match.  We seemed tentative and the sets were too low or off line so we couldn't get good power or angles.  That made it easier for them to block our attempts.

Penn State was jacked up and was jumping out of the gym so we had a hard time dealing with their strong outside kills. I thought our block improved because we moved a little farther outside, waited a little longer, and started jumping higher with more energy.  We started playing better and Penn State stopped playing out of their minds.  I learned to hate Penn State during all those years we lost to them so this definitely felt great.

Our crowd was very into the game but in the Stanford way.  Not lots of organized cheering but plenty of support.  I hope our team has a great final four and brings home a title.

Cheers,
Pete F.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 30 straight wins, advances to NCAA semis - M T - 12-09-2018

Coach Hambly has never lost at Maples.  (Can you believe Stanford lost 5 at Maples in 2016?!  Well, Coach Dunning & the team made up for that!)  We fans have experienced few recent matches that generated intense excitement & emotion.  (I remember one game this year where  Stanford was down 19-20 and I realized I wasn't worried at all.)  I think the turning point was the Stanford timeout when we were down 16-20 in the second set. The team started to climb back into it and the crowd started cheering. This team can be really great, but it seems they (and we fans) need to realize it isn't business as usual.  (That's part of the reason I'm glad Stanford is playing BYU again.  If it were Texas, Stanford might expect to win.)

I enjoyed seeing the coach talk to the players after the match.  You could see he was congratulating them individually - a really good bonding experience.  He then sent them off to dance with the Band (does anyone ever call them the  "Banned"?).  I don't recall that they've done that in the NCAA tournament games until this one.

------------

You know how announcers have all the facts about the teams and their players at their fingertips, and they use those during  the game?  Unless one chooses to think the announcers were incompetent (which I don't believe), one would have to believe the announcers for this game seemed not to know Stanford, or perhaps they chose to or were instructed not to say more than they had to about Stanford.

Early on, they observed "Penn State is known as a strong serving team” but I never heard them say anything to indicate that Stanford has more aces per set than  PSU.
Early on (and repeated multiple times), “This Penn State team is 6th in the nation in blocks per set.”  FINALLY, at an hour and 52 minutes into the match, they mentioned once that Stanford  was #1 in blocks per set.
They NEVER mentioned that Tami Alade was #1 in blocks/set.
They NEVER mentioned that Stanford is #3 in assists/set and Jenna Gray is #2 individually.
They NEVER mentioned that Stanford is #3 in kills/set (or that Plummer is #11).
They NEVER mentioned that Stanford is #3 in hitting percentage (or that Alade is #9).
Missing a few of those might be an oversight.  Missing so many would seem to either be incompetence or intent.   Even if Stanford didn't show, say, their blocking prowess until late, you'd think they'd say something like, "Stanford is #1 in the nation in blocking, but Penn State is the team with the lead in blocking."

At the beginning, ESPN highlighted the liberos of each team and promised to give a "dig of the night" (which I don't believe they delivered on).
I found it odd that they chose that statistic to look at.   Indeed, it is the worst of the major stats for the two teams, when looked at individually or as a team.
Blocks/set:  Alade #1, Stanford #1   |  Gray #43, PSU #6
Assists/set:  Gray #2, Stanford #3 |  Weiskircher #35, PSU #32
Kills/set:  Plummer #11, Stanford #3 | Reed >#150, PSU #31
Hit %:  Alade #9, Stanford #3 |  Hord #20, PSU #20
Aces/set: Gray #83, Stanford #98 | >#150, PSU #125
Digs/set: Hentz #80, Stanford #287 | White #75, PSU #185

While ESPN did show a graphic saying that Stanford beat Penn State 3-0 in September, the announcers only said “These two teams met one time before this season, but it was a long time ago.”

--------------

Russ Rose is obviously a great coach with a historic record.  But honestly, can’t he even bother to shift his sitting position a little when the girls that dry the court have to squeeze through the 6” he leaves for them to get off the floor?  I watched them very carefully trying to work their mops through that small space.  He didn't twitch a muscle or do anything to acknowledge that they were trying not to disturb him.  They aren’t his opponents or his staff.

In the 3rd set (when he was upset that an attempted challenge was not allowed as his attempt to challenge happened after the next serve had started), at 3-6, Rose violates rule 5.2.4.1 by approaching too close to the court during play.  Coaches & players are to remain more than 1.75m (the length of the dotted line outside the court) from the sideline (extended).  I presume one of the reasons for this rule is safety for the players, and indeed, one of his players fell out of bounds and slid through where he was standing forcing him to back out of her way.  From the way he approached the court (initially walked in a legal zone parallel to the scoring table and talking at the official (during play), and then straight out toward the court), I believe he was intentionally trying to violate the rule (in the same way a baseball coach chooses to get ejected).

Quote:SITUATION 3: During play, the Team R coach stands nearer to the court
than the imaginary 1.75-meter (70-inch) boundary described in Rule 5.2.4.1.
RULING: On the first occurrence, as a courtesy, the referees may remind the
coach to remain the appropriate distance from the court while the ball is in
play. Continued lack of compliance with this rule results in a delay sanction.

Regarding the late challenge, unfortunately, the video does not show the coach raising the challenge card. He is seen standing some seconds after the whistle has been blown for the serve to start.  What I saw was that he seemed to be discussing the situation with another coach, and then reached over to raise the card (while still seated). I can't specifically recall when the whistle was blown, but I do recall that he essentially immediately saw that the next serve was started and he put down the card and then stood up.   Only the head coach can raise a challenge.  I'm guessing the fact that he was seated and facing away from the down official lead her to believe he was not challenging, so she didn't have any reason to delay.  (I did notice that she would look at both benches immediately after a point.)

-----

At the game, if seemed as if Penn State only sweated on points they lost.  It seemed that they only called to dry the floor after points they lost.  I was going to check that on the video, but it was not shown.

------

One of the announcers mentioned going online and getting some advanced statistics  (how many times double touches are called, by conference).   I'm guessing that's behind a paywall, but does anyone know where that is?

Stanford plays BYU at 4PM (PST) on Thursday.  Nebraska - Illinois is at 6PM PST
If Stanford advances to the finals, that will be Saturday at 6PM PST.

The WBB game against Baylor is at noon on Saturday at Maples.  If Stanford wins on Thursday, it would be great if Stanford Athletics could have Maples open Saturday evening and let WVB fans come watch it there.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 30 straight wins, advances to NCAA semis - M T - 12-09-2018

Out of curiosity, I counted frames to get the timing of the very high dig by Jenna Gray (2nd set, 14-10).  181 frames (60fps, as TiVo  records  it)  = 3.0 seconds.
That translates to a vertical height of 36' (+ 5' or so for the height it was dug at) and a vertical velocity of 33mph.

As accurately described on the broadcast, the ball was above the top of the scoreboard.  I don't know what the ruling would be if it landed on top without coming down.

I also realized that the ball is probably not visible to the opposing players.

That's partly because teams that lose a point often dive to the floor trying to save it, but I had a similar impression, which was whenever we had a run of points PSU would do something to interrupt play for a bit: sometimes calling for the floor to be dried, questioning an official, or putting in a late substitution.

There's a men's basketball game at 4 pm on Saturday that would conflict.

If they make it to Saturday I can and will attend.  Will try to grab some other locals I know . . . anyone on this board potentially attending?

Penn State has a reputation (at least according to many comments on Volleytalk) for such delaying tactics.

Digs may not be one of our better stats, and I can't speak to what the broadcasters did or did not include in terms of stats (I wasn't really paying much attention to the broadcasters, but more the match itself last night), but Morgan Hentz is a pretty incredible libero. The amount of space that she can cover, freeing up additional players to cover the other parts of the court/set up the block, is in my opinion, one of the keys to why our defense is so good and dominant when it gets rolling.

As a Steelers fan, it was like when Troy Polamalu in his prime played free safety (and covered so much ground on the backend of the defense), freeing up linebackers and other DB's for blitzes, or enabling double teams of receivers.

I watched the match last night. Midway through the 2nd set I almost gave up on it as my anxiety increased. I'm so glad I didn't. Those ladies showed great resilience. I'm so glad they get another crack at BYU outside the safe confines of Provo. It would be a disappointment if the junior class doesn't get at least one more championship after being freshman on the youngest team ever to win it.

McClure is my current favorite player on the team. She seems to play well above her physical gifts (not that she's not extremely gifted).

Also, digs per set is a stat that can be deceiving depending on how many chances there are for a dig.  If you have a pretty dominant offense that can put things away with ease, there won’t be a lot of long rallies that offer up an opportunity to dig.  Likewise, if the blocking game is solid, lots of attempts will never make it very far.  The best metric is probably opposing hitting percentage, which takes into account blocks and digs, and is not sensitive to the number of attempts the other team puts up.

RE: WVolleyball sets new program record with 30 straight wins, advances to NCAA semis - BobK - 12-09-2018

A player races and dives, reaches out and as the ball is about to hit the ground bats it 10 feet in the air so another can pass it. Maybe the most exciting play in volleyball. That my friend is a dig.

McClure is an amazingly gifted athlete and glad your favorite but very physically gifted. Just not 6-6 or close
