To do so, in a manner that replaces the value of JJAW or Irwin, he'll need to catch an awful lot more than eight passes.

Sure, but that's one hell of a lot easier without them above him on the depth chart.

I think we will get good production at WR from the group of St. Brown, Wedington, M. Wilson, Stewart, and Fehoko, along with incoming freshmen Higgins, Bowman, and Graham.

He caught those 8 catches as our 4th or 5th option.  Next year he'll have much more opportunity and he'll have had a year of experience.  I'm very excited by what I saw of him this year.

Hopefully Weddington will be healthy.  We had an embarrassment of riches as receiving options this year.  Next year we should be in good shape.  Let's see what Simi can do too.

I think so as well, or at least that we should get good production from this group.

However, St. Brown in particular seems to have different skills than JJAW and Irwin. The pass game will have to adjust for that - or someone like Fehoko will have to have a breakout.

[And my other post was mainly noting that a large yds/catch on few catches is as likely to reflect randomness to the high side as much as potential for the next year.  e.g. in 2017 Scarlett averaged 29.0 yds/catch on six catches leading to 2018 where he averaged 11 yds on 10 receptions.]

I've got that idea, yes. That's why I asked him what he thought the offseason checklist for the team should be, and he answered like he's gonna be a part of it. (while inadvertently outing Kaden's future plans!)

So as of now, I think he's back. But that's speculation on my part

Good reference. I listened to K.J.'s quote on Troy's "Treecast" podcast in the car today. Troy is being conservative in his comments here, as journalists ought to do. But if you listen to the the primary source, it's pretty clear that K.J. is not planning to leave, at least not currently. He went through a very detailed punch-list of off-season work that needs to be done. He talked about the up-and-coming receivers and the work that they need to do together. As noted by Troy, he even inadvertently divulged Kaden's departure, which now proved to be correct. He was in a straightforward and forthcoming mode, and it did not at all sound like he was leaving, although he had every opportunity to hedge his response.

Of course, anything can change until January 14. But I think K.J.'s response was a clear indicator of his current mindset.

Update: Here’s the audio of Troy’s thoughts at 16:40 and K.J.’s response at 18:20.

I'm fairly certain he wasn't targeted 50+ times.  I'm thinking extrapolation...

True indeed. But losing your top two WRs, TE, an RB is above average. Pile on the QB and that's devestating, especially given the depth chart's weakness. Mills has now had two knee surgeries, I believe on the same knee. I hope he graduates.

I think KJ would be making a big mistake to leave for the draft. My understanding is that his draft grade is Day 3 (5th-7th rounds).

Even if Costello stays, we still lose 12 starters (including Bailey). That's also above average.

At least we have some quality guys replacing those leaving.
If Costello stays (which I think he will) we should be OK.
If he decides to leave, it will be a building year and most likely Shaw's worst since he has been here from a W-L standpoint.
