I was out and DVR'd this game, but it sounds so ugly I'm not sure I even want to see it. The conference really needs to do something about the officiating. Not only is "PAC-12 refs" an widely-held insult, but when it leads to player injuries it only hurts the entire conference. All but literally shooting ourselves in the foot...

Fingall's initial injury as she came down the court in transition. Asiah Jones, who had just missed a short shot (clapping her hands in disgust afterwards) over Fingall, is the one who caused the injury. Fingall had pulled down the rebound and so was the last one down the court. Jones was under the basket and then walked out toward where Fingall was running. At the foul line, Fingall was looking up at the ball as it was approaching the basket; Jones never looked at the ball, her eyes were only on Fingall. Still with her eyes on Fingall, Jones lowers her body and swings her hips & rear into Fingall's thigh midstride, pushing it back about 6", causing the hyperextension. Fingall coilapses to the ground. Looks to me like a perfectly good Judo move.
[If
anyone from PAC-12 network reads this: Consider marking the camera operator's monitor with how much of the screen is lost at the bottom due to putting the score & ticker at the bottom. That way, the operator can center the view based on what the audience sees, not what the operator sees. If you look at the live view of Fingall's injury (3Q 7:15, about 67 minutes into the broadcast), there is extra space above the highest the ball goes, while half the players on the court are cut off at the bottom. Shortly afterwards, the play is shown without the score, and only 1 player is cut off (at her knees) from complete view.]
I have to say that I thought USC showed a lot of grit in their roughness in the game. I think their hustle showed up some weaknesses (lazy passing, drives into crowds) in Stanford. Mark Trakh is an experienced coach against Tara. I suspect he recognizes that Stanford is susceptible to rough play.
I'm concerned about Sunday's game against UCLA. Normally, I'd expect Fingall to be held out in order to have time to recover.. But if Dodson is still out, we are starting to struggle with our bigs. Coffee has very much improved but is a step slow and allows herself to be pushed around. Jerome is still a bit inexperienced. Unlike USC, UCLA has some time to plan against Stanford without Fingall & Dodson. (Even if both Lexie & Sniezek can play, they aren't substitutes for the two bigs.)
In the USC-UCLA game, USC came out like they played against us - a scrambling defense that discombobulated the opponent. But UCLA recovered. Down 39-28 at the half, they won the 3rd quarter 31-10. Up 10 going into the last quarter, they held off USC and won by 7.
Now UCLA beat Cal in OT. (FYI, Cal outscored UCLA by 12 in the 3rd quarter.)
I'm anxious about Sunday's game. I wish all our players a speedy recovery. We started Friday's game with 3 starters not suited up. We might have to play on Sunday with 4 starters not able to play.

Yeah, it's a testament to the depth of our team this year that even with 2 starters out and our sixth and seventh (wo)man out, we'd still very competitive. (By my count, Smith, Williams, and Carrington would all be starters under any conceivable lineup.)
I hope everything is ok with Romano? :(

I really hope Fingall is ok. She looks to me to be the most improved player we have from last year. She was playing with intensity and that's something we always seem to need.
There were a couple of moments when we had Brown, Williams and Carrington on the court at the same time and in transition. That was an eye-opening display of athleticism.
This is a very interesting team. Williams was out of control a lot but she came through when it counted. Historically, guard play is essential to doing well in the post-season but I'm starting to think we will go as far as our bigs will take us.

UCLA's strength is it's front line. Either Maya or Nadia (or both) needs to play tomorrow in my opinion. We were fortunate yesterday that Alanna managed to avoid foul trouble; she carried a large load, especially on defense

I hope Nadia and Maya are ok and get better soon because we will definitely need them throughout the pac-12 season. I do think Nadia has improved this year but have to respectfully disagree as to who is the most improved player on our team. That award (at least right now) I think belongs to Maya. She was always a good shot blocker but got lost on defense her freshman year. Not anymore. And she was inconsistent with layups last year. Now she is making more of them and is developing a nice post game. Plus she has the top-level speed/strength/hops that she always had. I think how far we go in the tournament this year will depend on her continued development.

It was her left leg that was hyperextended in the 3rd at 7:03 and that gave her trouble when she first came in, and then caused her to collapse when she came in again.
4Q 9:32 Fingall’s first play after being put back in was a defensive effort against a shooter in low. After a slight jump she landed only on her good right leg and hopped. She didn’t even make it to the foul line on offense.
4Q 9:11 A rebound comes her way but she couldn’t jump for it, only putting up a hand to deflect it. That cost us 2 points.
At the other end, her play contributed to a turnover. In the resulting defensive play, it seems unlikely that she even made it to the half court line.
4Q 8:51 Fingall goes out at a free throw.
4Q 8:22 Fingall comes back in at another USC free throw . Eight seconds later, as she sets her left leg to stop her motion, she flinches & pulls her injured knee up as though she had a sharp pain, and collapses to the floor. The male ref calls a phantom foul on the USC player.
MHO is that it was a risk to bring Fingall back in at 9:32. After the way she looked out on the court (I'd say that in 41 seconds she was mostly responsible for a 6 point swing to USC), it was absolutely unbelievable to me that she was put back in at 8:22.

That didn't look like a phantom foul to me. Lots of contact from the USC player behind her.

Your sharp eyes aided by DVR are instructive. It sounds as if she was definitely hurt at that point and the injury was having an impact on her play. I doubt that such an injury will be gone a day and a half later. Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised.
Maya could conceivably be back, but if it was a mild ankle sprain that she had then it would probably be best to rest her too. All the signs point for a less than standard package of bigs.
Our best hope I think is to see Lexie back. She warmed up with the team on Friday, which points to her injury being healed but she was getting the rust off. Having her back today could be more important, given the team we are playing, than getting Dodson or Fingall back. UCLA is quick but not especially big. Let us hope.
I could see a lineup at times like this: Smith Hull Hull Carrington Williams or Smith Hull Carrington Williams Brown.
If Smith gets in foul trouble and Dodson and Fingall are out, we will likely lose. Jerome has not developed offensively as much as we would like. Coffee seems to have more offensive potential with both the occasional three point shot and a soft touch around the basket, but I have my doubts that she can be effective in man defense against this quick team. Perhaps we just play a zone around her?
I do hope Romano is OK. I've always liked what I have seen of her both as a player and as an anthropology student. This is the kind of game and situation when she might have gotten some time and helped the team.

Yes - I thought 'SC's" physical play was often dirty and dangerous. Often they were not playing the ball but physically and purposely fouling our players, sometimes in dangerous situations.

Can the team complain to the commissioner about the refs’ lack of calls which leads to injury?

Ironically I think that was a Missy Barlow game. But way less camera time for Missy than usual.
