Most of us have heard the old Calvin Coolidge joke about this lady going up to him and saying Mr. President, I just bet someone I could get you to say three words. Coolidge's reply; "You lose".
Anybody want to bet they can get Phogge to say something positive about Stanford football?

Willner has a column on UCLA’s need to hire Tony Bennett. In a nutshell, he contends that only UCLA can lift the conference. I suspect he’s right. Because Pac 12 basketball is awful. Worse than irrelevant.

I remember, not too long ago, it seems, when I would have legitimate arguments with my friends over if the Pac 12 (may have been Pac 10 at that time) was the best basketball conference in the country. Good times.

When did this Stanford QB Davis Mills thread turn into a PAC-12 hoops discussion?

I think the jeopardy category was, "Recent Stanford sports disappointments." Up next, the sailing team...

It would be fun to get Andrew Ng to write an AI program that would respond to Cardboard posts. I wonder how many of us could pick out the authentic.

Given 2/3 of Twitter tweets are reportedly from bots, probably not many.

I think it turned when Phogge said “there’s something rotten in Denmark”

You might want to ask Herbig and the guys at Rice directly.

Better examples are Barton, Jackson, and to a smaller extent Buncom and Wilson. The Rice guys (I still don't think Reagan Williams to Rice is official yet, so at this stage it's more like informed conjecture) weren't gonna start, and Herbig's scenario was behind a paywall so won't repeat it here but it wasn't "rot."

I always assumed (like a lot of kids) Herbig wanted to start drawing those NFL paychecks sooner rather than later.
As far as the rest are concerned, I am not that familiar with all their situations, but I could certainly see a kid who had been in the program for four years, had his degree, and didn't have specific NFL ambitions wanting to get on with his life, rather than going through the grind of another year and risking possible injury.

Yeah, it's been alluded to here, but it seemed Herbig was as much the problem as he was the victim. WRT offensive line, the biggest indictment in my mind is Pac-12 all-conference HM member Casey Tucker.

Um. I guess I forgot my secret decoder ring, w.r.t. Herbig. But Casey Tucker doing so well at ASU...it's a shame he didn't do that for Stanford instead last season.

Tucker was likely told he would have to compete for a starting job (or not have one) as a 5th year senior with Foster Sarell having played all 14 games the year before, having 3 years of eligibility left, and already being close to parity with Tucker with greater upside.

I don't think we have ever seen something like this year with 3-4 defensive starters not coming back for their fifth year (Jackson, Buncom, Barton and Edwards) and retire from football. Injuries played a role but this is still unusual. Football clearly wasn't fun for them any more. It is a grind. That such a large number of players felt that way could explain last year's underachievement. The team was filled with people who didn't really want to be there.

Could this be a reflection of this generation's proclivities?

The generations turned over in one year?
