Yeah and California issues drivers licenses that are supposed to be able to be used at TSA for ID in 2020. Except they they won't.
Non political but government and businesses not only want to know everything about you but also control you.

seems like the ticket itself could indicate STM status
That's how it was last year. Apparently someone decided it was important for buyers of resold season tickets not to be able to use the STM gates. So important that they had to come up with the stupid oversized plastic cards and lanyards.

I can understand the argument for that. I don't agree with it - if I sell/give my tickets to someone else I would like the STM benefits conferred on them.

My read was slightly more generous, that, since the only indication of status was the ticket, the only people who saw it were the scanners and they just let anyone in. So now there will be staff farther up redirecting people without the credential to other gates.
I still think it's dumb, but hey, my kid had fun with the lanyard pretending it was a necklace and a fishing line, so I guess there's that.
Also, what the hell is with sending us this big glossy packet, but then making us print the tickets from 7 different goddamn PDFs? Couldn't they pay the extra $0.50 to just mail us some nice tickets like they used to? Sometimes it really seems like whoever's in charge has completely lost their marbles.

FWIW, I actually prefer the PDFs. I can't lose them. I always know where my tickets are. I just go to my email. I can print another one if I need it. Granted, if it is a notable win, I probably won't save the ticket, as I have done with some of the "real" tickets. However, I think it is a good trade-off.
OTOH, the lanyards are really stupid. It seems that in today's world, everybody is expected to / chooses to wear an employee / student badge / lanyard during all their waking hours. People wear the things to lunch, to shop, to the restaurant for dinner. It advertises to everybody their name and where they work / study. In many cases, if you know the code, it tells you what they do and their rank in the organization. Then people talk about their right to privacy (LOL)!
Back "in the day", the only people who actually had to (at least in theory) wear badges at work were DoD related company employees. We were instructed not to wear them at lunch or after work, as it "identified" us. We hated the damn things and would "forget" to wear them at work wherever possible. Now, everybody, including Stanford students, run around with a badge dangling from their neck as if it is the most natural thing in the world. IMHO, this is not a step forward.

Well, they're specifically mentioning a ticketing app, so that should be a backstop. The thing that grates me about the PDFs is that I need to click on 7 links, download 7 different PDFs, open 7 different files, and hit ctrl+p 7 different times. It's just, like, why???? Send me one goddamn file.
It also strikes me as someone chintzy to send tickets this way. It feels like this should be, as you say, a backup for if you lose tickets, not the main delivery method.

True. I've also gone with PDFs, but they used to email the actual PDFs. This season and last there's been these weird intermediate links.
