RE: Women's Tennis: ITA Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-22-2019

Arbuthnott/Blake get UW's Gallagher/Kopcalic in the final. That duo won a match tiebreaker for the third set against what I'd figured to be a weaker Oregon team, but this is also the same pair that beat Gordon/Shin 8-4.

The doubles final will be first, at 11:00am. Singles is scheduled for 12:00pm.

The most important thing, of course, is that despite Cal's surfeit of seeds, neither the singles nor doubles title will be won by Cal today.

So far, Kozyreva has steamrolled everyone she's played, except for Arbuthnott, who she beat 6-3, 7-5. Every other match has seen Kozyreva drop 4 games or fewer, which makes me look at Arbuthnott's performance in a slightly different light.

Gordon's path has been similar. Aside from the match against Ivanov (which she won 6-4, 7-5), she's dropped 1, 5, 1, 2, and 3 games, respectively, in each of her matches.

Last year, not only was Kozyreva leading Gordon, but she had other good results, too. She lost to San Diego's Solymar Colling and Oregon's Shweta Sangwan in tight matches, and beat Santa Clara's Maddie Pothoff handily, but it's her unfinished matches that are most impressive. She was two games away from beating Gordon, one game away from beating USC's Salma Ewing, and she had split the first two sets against UCLA's Jada Hart before the match was abandoned. She doesn't get the kind of quality matches playing in the WCC to really get her ranking up, but the preseason ranking this year (#68) is a much better reflection of her quality than her unranked status when she played Gordon last year. Don't get me wrong, Gordon is better, and if both play as well as they can, Gordon should win. But it's tennis, so one never knows.

Kozyreva shouldn't want for quality matches now, of course, since she'll have her hands full at Fall Nationals, as both she and Gordon have now qualified, regardless of today's result. Arbuthnott/Blake still need a win, though.

Gallagher/Kopcalic lost the first set to Oregon 3-6, but then steamrollered them 6-1 and then 10-4 in the super tiebreaker.  Our two might be better than them as singles players, but neither pair is experienced playing with each other as a doubles team. [color=#111111][size=small][font=Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif]It should be a good match, but I favor us in that one. I'd call Gordon's match a tossup based on the few minutes that I saw her play yesterday. Her first serve was not at her best, and Kozyreva has the game to punish Gordon's second serve and gain at least the initiative on her first serve.

Doubles is on. I think we just won the first set, and broke the first game of the second set.

RE: Women's Tennis: ITA Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-22-2019

One interesting detail at this tournament is that I haven't seen Lele at all coaching our players, only a relatively slim man I presume is Francis Sargeant. I don't know where she is, but her absence is curious. (Though one of the voices you can hear on the stream sounds like Lele, so I dunno. Maybe it's a way to force Sargeant to build up a rapport with players as quickly as possible so it's old hat by the time the spring season rolls around.)

In any event, I don't know the scoreline in doubles, but singles is about to get started on Court 1. They're both wearing similar white outfits, but Michaela has a Stanford S logo on the front of hers (and plus, she's wearing a visor), so distinguishing them on the stream shouldn't be all that complicated.

I thought I just caught a glimpse of her walking by the doubles court (but not coaching). I'm sure she's on site.

Thanks! I've been in meetings; any sense of the current scoreline in either doubles or singles? I saw Gordon just hold and Kozyreva hold, but I don't know what happened before.

Speak of the devil! Yep, that's the first time I've seen her, but she was much more involved last year. And it looks like doubles is over, so assuming you're right that we took the first set, I presume that means we won, but we'll see the final scoreline soon enough!

I think Gordon just took the first, since she'd been serving first after the changeovers and I think she just won that service game before they sat down. But I can't be positive, since I haven't been following every point.

RE: Women's Tennis: ITA Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-22-2019

It is really flipping irritating that we're not getting live scoring for this tournament. I shouldn't have to obsessively follow every point in order to know what the score in a match is. (I don't know what the score is.)

Looks like some tight lines being called on both sides today, though Kozyreva has been more demonstrative about objecting to certain out calls.

An exchange of breaks there in the second set, but I'm still largely clueless about what the match situation is.

Then another break of Gordon's serve, followed by Gordon breaking right back.

In the little I've watched, Kozyreva looks like the better player. Moves much more fluidly, more athletic, and she's dictating points more often. But the funny thing about Gordon's game is that she doesn't always look dominant. She plays a more defensive style, and while she's not the kind of athlete that Lampl was, running all over the court, she is a master at anticipating and being in the right place at the right time. That sort of consistency is maddening to play against, and you can tell it's getting to Kozyreva sometimes. Gordon just hit a ball back to her that looked like it might land out (it would've been close, at least), but instead of waiting, Kozyreva hit it on the fly and sprayed it wide. (Of course, then Kozyreva followed that up with two outstanding points, moving Gordon around the court and hitting winners down the line.)

RE: Women's Tennis: ITA Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-22-2019

And that's it! Kozyreva hits a ball into the net and Gordon pumps her fist while walking to the net! That's three straight Northwest Regional titles for Michaela, and a solid win over a very good player in Kozyreva.

All right now!  Way to go Gordon.

RE: Women's Tennis: ITA Northwest Regionals - oldalum - 10-22-2019

Arbuthnott/Blake won 6-4, 6-2.
A good day for Stanford W tennis. And no Cal players on court today.

Gordon's win was 6-2, 7-5, so all of those exchanged breaks at the tail end of the second set mean it was a constant see-saw between Gordon being up a break and the set being on serve. So, Gordon had a 4-3 lead in the second set, got broken to 4-4, broke back to 5-4, was broken again while serving for the set, but broke back to lead 6-5 before finally holding to take the set 7-5. That would have been great tension had I known the score at the time!
