A lot has been said about Tavita being a weak Coordinator, but I also have questions about defense. In the past I have admired some of Lance Anderson's defensive game plans, but this was one of our weakest defensive seasons in a long time. Were the injuries to our defensive players more serious than the injuries to our offensive players? Was the lack of recruiting at key defensive positions more apparent than the lack of recruiting at key offensive positions?
It is an honest question--I am really uncertain. I wish it were really clear that one coordinator was to blame, since that would imply a simple fix.

Hard to go from head coach to Offensive coordinator but this is what’s needed for 2020
He has a 7 year contract at Sac State. Besides, if you go on the Cal websites, he is already penciled in as replacing Beau Baldwin, not to mention that he was the OC at Utah previously. We are pretty late to that party. FWIW, his departure from Utah was not considered entirely a bad thing. YMMV

Well, it kinda worked for both Kiffen and Sark at Alabama. At least until Saban left Kiffen on the tarmac as well. . . .

how many coaches has Shaw actually fired/encouraged to leave as opposed to those who left on their own?

Can’t think of any but when a position coach leaves you never know unless it’s a promotion.
But that’s why it’s so important to do it. Yes, letting Pritchard go is a loss of face but so is a 4-8 season and finishing last in your division. Big changes are needed and the offense was the bigger problem by far

Hart retired of course
I think the defense was definitely worse than the offense. We need that change.
Injuries were brutal of course and now up to Shaw to take the bull by the horns.

Based on this year's experience and our S&C program, here's my estimated starting lineup as of about game six:
WR Freshman
SL Freshman
TE Freshman
RB Freshman
FB Freshman
LT Freshman
LG Walk-on Freshman
C Freshman
RG Freshman
RT Freshman
QB Freshman
P Walk-on Freshman
RDE Freshman
NT Freshman
LDE Freshman
WLB Freshman
MLB Freshman
RLB Freshman
FS Walk-on Freshman
SS Freshman
LCB Freshman
RCB Freshman
SCB Freshman
K Walk-on Freshman
Note that we have recruited a single defensive lineman for next year, no linebackers, and no safeties. Unless we are planning on putting out a defense with one DE, three corner-backs and a bunch of walk-ons.

Is that a condemnation of the all Frosh starting team, or a condemnation of our recruiting? How on earth does a Power 5 team recruit only one D-lineman and zero linebackers and safeties?

Not that this should be a consideration but after this year, what opportunities are there for Tavita to move? Who wants an OC coming off a 4-win season? Had a change been made last year, he would doubtless have had more opportunities to explore.

Tongue in cheek the former, but humor aside it is the latter. I've been harping all fall about the lack of recruiting on defense. I think we have some late offers out to reinforce the defense, but I don't know about the probability of landing them or whether they are plan B kind of guys. I agree that if we want to get out of our current funk, the staff's resources should be focused on recruiting.
SamuelMcF has a good read on the team, so this comment is ominous:
Quote:DL Booker, Williams, Swann (Williams, Swann, and rotational piece Schaffer could all move on, and recruiting them back should be priority #1. Hell, #0.)
Not sure if he is reflecting an informed concern that they might not return or just stating the obvious, which is that they are seniors and could graduate this year. and not come back I have not heard anything one way or another about them.

Agree. Lack of recruiting on D pathetic. That said there are a few guys still in play. But being "in the know" about this stuff can be INFURIATING.
Not an informed concern about the seniors; just stating the obvious. We did see a defensive starter exodus last year and better pray we don't see another.

OK, thanks. Yes, it is obvious, but I just wasn't sure if you were hearing something. As I recall, there were some extenuating circumstances last year, like one linebacker who had legitimate health/injury concerns, but I still haven't gotten a good read on whether fourth years with eligibility left not coming back for reasons other than the NFL are the new normal or if last year was an aberration.
Five seniors with eligibility left were starters against Cal (Williams, Swann, Robinson, Pryts, and Eboh); Antoine and Fox would have been had they not gotten injured. And while we might debate some of their effectiveness, we simply don't have the depth at key positions if they depart en masse. The defensive linemen are by far the most indispensable, but the experience at ILB, CB (assuming as I do that Adebo is gone), and Safety is indispensable.
