We thought that Senior Day was sort of premature--that we would have a couple of rounds of the NCAAs to cheer on our seniors one more time. We won't. Our seniors--except for redshirts--have played their last game for Stanford.
So long, Nadia Fingall. It has been such a pleasure watching your steady leadership in the post develop over the years, seeing that three point shot blossom late, watching you fight back from a devastating injury to give yourself body and soul to your team this year. We shall miss you.
So long, Mikaela Brewer. Your personal story has been an inspiration to many fans and many students. You have overcome more than any other player I know to be able to play this year. Sharing your story with the world took enormous courage. There was nothing more joyous than seeing you on the floor with a smile.
Anna Wilson, Dijonai Carrington, I don't know if we need to say good bye or not. Now that the season is over, perhaps you and the coaches can let us know :) We'd love to see both of you around for another season!

Good points, thanks.
P.S. How bent do you think Ionescu (and her fellow final-season players) are after the NCAA's decision? That one has gotta hurt.
On the bright side, Ionescu's return for this season did allow her to win a P12 Tourney title, something that eluded her (and her teammates) last year . . .

I am sure it hurts deeply. I know it hurts my daughter--seniors--particularly. I don't wish the season ending this way on anyone.
When Luck or Love came back to play for us when they could have gone pro, I admired that. And so to be consistent I have to admire Ionescu. I was pretty sure that my team would not win the national championship this year, but I sure as heck hoped that Oregon would defeat South Carolina or Baylor and/or crush UConn again. They did not get the chance.
I completely support shutting the country down to avoid--if is is possible after all of the missteps--the fate of Italy, which is now triaging patients to die. But I also feel deep sadness at all the lost opportunities and crushed dreams that have come out of today's decisions.

All good points, yes, re our players. All have been wonderful representatives of Stanford in each of their own ways, young women of whom we all can be very proud. They will be missed.
And I"m very sorry that we won't have another chance to see them on the court in Stanford uniforms. That is a real loss to their fans, and very sad for all of them. And to come so suddenly . . . they must be feeling a real sense of loss.
But it's not just for them. The loss is for all the seniors on all the basketball teams everywhere in the country . . . and all the other sports, who have had their college careers suddenly cut short. It must be especially difficult and painful to accept for those athletes and teams that thought they had a shot at a championship. But also for those who just wanted to compete in their sport to the end of their time in college. I really feel sorry for all of them.

I wonder if the NCAA might adopt a universal "hardship" year for winter and spring sports this year. Allow seniors a fifth year, maybe ease scholarship limits for a year. It punishes incoming players a bit, by making PT harder to come by, but it would allow the seniors a chance if they wanted it to compete.
Of course, this and a lot of reactions assume that Covid-19 is a one-off. I'm almost certain that it won't be, given the speed of human travel and the growing petri dish of warmer climates, and hope we can learn from the experience.

Bob must have have meant The Athletic:

Here's the quote on that point. Nothing about Anna, but the quote implies Di may return. There's also a ton more in this article. I do recommend subscribing to the Athletic!
What’s the possibility Carrington or Jones is able to return at some point in the NCAA Tournament?
I mean, we just want them for next year, yeah.

If Tara heard the question correctly, it certainly sounds like the return of Carrington for next year is likely! On the other hand, the way she answered it also suggests that there is uncertainty that they would be ready for next year. She did not say "we expect them back for next year." But if Carrington were definitely leaving she would not say "we want her back."

San Francisco Chronicle article indicates that Anna has petitioned for a fifth year and so will DiJonai. I really hope both can return next season.

If they receive a fifth year, is that for Stanford, or could they grad transfer?

I read one article that said spring sports are getting an extra year, but I doubt winter sports will since almost all completed their regular seasons and are (sadly) just missing out on postseason. I don't necessarily like it but I can understand where they're coming from.
The one I'm not as sure about are all-year sports like golf. Most teams played about 1/2 to 2/3 of their regular season.
Now I'm kinda glad for Andrea Lee & Albane Valenzuela that they left and went to the LPGA. Wow this would have been horrible for them if they'd stayed

Anna for sure is pending decision to return to Stanford... I’m assuming DiJonai is also hoping to return to Stanford but I’m not sure.. I am crossing my fingers.
