The way I remember hearing it is that Duke and Stanford were both recruiting CJ and Mike Dunleavy Jr, the top 2 West Coast prospects at the SG/SF positions, heavily. Dunleavy committed to Duke first, filling that need, and CJ committed to Stanford shortly thereafter.
Sadly, Stanford's storied 2000-01 season ended with a 87-73 loss to Maryland in the Western Regional finals. The Terps were led by Juan Dixon and sophomore PF Lonny Baxter, who was named the Regional's MOP. This was made more painful by the fact that Mike Montgomery had highly coveted Baxter, a MD native, as a recruiting target out of high school.
BTW - I was at that Newell Classic game too - good times!!!
I had a seat at that game and distinctly remember a Duke couple sitting in front of me. Naturally, they were very happy through most of the game and made sure everyone within a few rows of them knew it....constantly. When Stanford completed its massive comeback, I screamed as loud as I could with joy...sure enough, I was able to get their attention, which included a couple of dirty looks. I had a similar situation at the L.A. Coliseum in 2011 when a USC fan in front of me was insufferable for almost three and a half hours. Based on the dirty look she gave me following my similar shriek of joy when Stanford won in triple OT, I suspect I also got her attention.

Aren't those satisfying? I was a sophomore in college on January 10, 1982 when the Niners played Dallas in the NFC championship, winner going on to the Super Bowl. The community room of our dorm was full, with about 40 people watching the game on the big screen. Remember, the Niners were in trouble most of the game (six turnovers, ugh), and two obnoxious Cowboy fans (but I repeat myself) kept cheering and high-fiving each other throughout the game, particularly when SCU alum Doug Cosbie caught a TD pass from Danny White to put Dallas ahead 27-21.
And then, The Catch. Biiiiiig cheers from the other 38 of us in the room, and the Niner defense held off a furious Dallas challenge, and the two Dallas fans skulked out of the room...
BTW, Stanford was very well represented in that game with six players on the two rosters. Tony Hill (WR), Pat Donovan (LT) and Benny Barnes (S) played for Dallas; Guy Benjamin (QB), Rick Gervais (DB), and Milt McColl (LB) played for the 49ers.

One of my favorite Stanford sports memories is what Tavita said after the USC game in 2007: (roughly) "It's one thing to hear 90,000 screaming. It's another to hear 90,000 people STOP screaming."

Well that was fun!
Thanks!
Man how I love that team. So many PLAYERS. Freaking Julius Barnes.
To be fair to Dunleavy, it's really hard to hit free throws with both of your hands wrapped around your own neck.

What I remember being particularly painful about that game was former Stanford recruit and Maryland reserve center Tahj Holden coming off the bench and hitting 3/4 three pointers - all daggers.
I don't think Holden every became much of a scorer for the Terps, outside of that game.

At the risk of more thread drift... I recorded the Stanford-Maryland game because my wife and I had tickets for a performance of "The Vagina Monologues" at the Canon Theater in Beverly Hills. I heard the score on the car radio on the way home, so I deleted the recording before watching it. I intentionally did not read any media reports about the game, because I knew they would only make me more upset. Until I read the posts above I had no idea about the details. Oh, and the theater has since been demolished and is now, I believe, a hotel.
What I choose to remember about the 2000-01 team is the victory over Duke, winning the Pac-10, and being ranked #1 for at least part of the season. On a side note, we defeated the two teams--Duke and Arizona--that played for the national championship. I wonder how often that has happened in college basketball?
N.B. Full disclosure: Stanford split against UA, with a win on the road and a loss at Maples. Doesn't change the fact mentioned above, though.

I was at both games too. I still can't get over how Maryland had guys who shot 27% for the season hitting 3 point after 3 point. Horrible taste in my mouth to this day.

Williamson's attorneys are expected to file an appeal with Florida's Third District Court of Appeal, arguing that an earlier federal case in North Carolina involving the same parties and claims has precedence.

College hoops is full of them. Remember when Miller and Self seemed to have their backs against the wall a few years back? It was going to blow up all the corruption rampant in the NCAA and among the coaching elite. Nothing happened. Maybe an asst took the fall, spent a few months in jail, if that. Pathetic.
