Yep. Women's volleyball is a much bigger sport nationally. There are 23 Division I men's volleyball programs, while there are 333 Div. I women's volleyball programs.
Serious question. Would it be without Title IX?
well there are about 7x as many girls vs boys high school volleyball players....

and way back when I was in high school ('78 in Ohio) we had a girls volleyball team but not a boys volleyball team. Most boys them were not very interested in volleyball in the midwest, probably due to the overlap then with basketball and wrestling season, not sure that's changed.....

Not including intramurals or club sports, there are 239 men's collegiate volleyball programs, as follows:
- 23 NCAA D1
- 24 NCAA D2
- 107 NCAA D3
- 43 NAIA
- 41 Junior colleges

Girls volleyball is like football in terms of interest among athletes. For the boys, there are strong boys volleyball programs in most midwestern states, particularly Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois and Michigan. None, to my knowledge, in Indiana. And men's volleyball is a spring sport, not a winter sport (except -- I think -- Wisconsin, which plays volleball in the fall). Overall, there are boys high school volleyball programs in 36 states (per MaxPreps).

Comparable figures for women -- there are about 1,802 women’s varsity volleyball programs
- 334 NCAA Div. 1
- 298 NCAA Div. 2
- 437 NCAA Div. 3

This site gives slightly different figures for the NCAA, but the differences are small --

Beach volleyball could have been another possible candidate for cancellation. It will always be a regional sport. Because the season starts in February and players are suppose to practice year round there aren’t going to be many beach programs formed in Minnesota or North Dakota.
It has never been a spectator sport. On the professional level the AVP doesn’t charge for most of its tournament matches because no one will pay to watch. When the PAC-12 airs matches the ratings have to be one small step above zero.
The Stanford Beach program has had an overall losing record since the inception of the sport in 2013. However things might be changing for the better. This year’s recruiting class is ranked #4 in the nation by Volleyballmag.com.

I am surprised that none of these article mention admissions. I just don't think the admissions breaks needed to have 12% of the Stanford student body play varsity sports was sustainable.
The level of the cuts suggest that this issue was being worked on by the AD for a long time. At some level I wonder if covid-19 and the money issues were really just a convenient excuse. Combine that with the fact that no students are on campus to complain and you have a great opportunity to make a decisions that you know you needed to make in any case.

You are not correct 043 in asuming all 880 got admissions breaks. When we turn down a 4.25 top 30 athlete in a sport that draws about 3,000 per game, tell that family about breaks. Then you have the several hundred walk ons who wehn thru normal admissions.

Yes.
Football, WVB and Men’s and Women’s basketball are required by the P12 in order to be a conference member.

Stanford built a nice beach facility only a few years ago, so it would be surprising for the AD to reverse course on that one and decide to cut the sport.

Field Hockey has a nice turf stadium. What goes there now ? Will be interesting

The beach facility converted some space to sand courts, iirc. It's right near the Ford Center, and it's pretty small. Furthermore, I think there are players who double up between beach and indoor. Not much overhead.
Field hockey stadium is going to be an interesting one. The sailing/rowing boathouse has been emptied of all occupants except the openweight women's team. The newly-constructed indoor rowing/training facility for rowing is only partially dedicated to rowing; I'm sure they'll find people to fill empty office space.
Let's go back to Title IX. I don't think women's volleyball would have grown to what it is now without Title IX back in the 1970s. The growth of women's volleyball at the primary school level is likely fueled in large part by the scholarships offered by university teams. Rewarding volleyball skills with a full ride is a great way to incentivize the development of a sport at the high school level.

I’m sorry full metal but the beach stadium is just south of the field hockey stadium. Not near Ford at all
Beach had one indoor player this year.

I’m sure you know the full story about this athlete. Here’s what I know. Denise told her what she needed on the SAT to get admitted. She didn’t achieve that score.
This player was recruited by Dunning. When Hambly came in he was more focused on recruiting front row players. He told the player (5’11”) Stanford was not the right team for her if she wanted to play front row which she very much did.
I personally would have recruited her without reservation for play in the back row but Hambly saw the team’s needs differently. In any event she has gone on to great success and probably ended up at the better fit for her.

Palo Alto I think I may know a bit more
But won’t discuss more on an open board.
However for sure it all worked out for this athlete

Title IX and women's volleyball is more competitive nationally. Also, we are better at it.
BC
Also, women's volleyball is a Pac-12 sport. Men's volleyball was in MPSF it is not a Pac-12 sport.

Bobb's 100% correct. The academic profile of varsity athletes (at least at the Ivies) doesn't differ significantly from the rest of the student body. Consequently, the Ivies aren't nearly as competitive as Stanford, which is much more serious about athletics.

My guess would be the dearly departed crew. At my alma mater it was rugby (went five teams deep) because those Micks really like to fight and drink...
