He's not my favorite Stanford QB and not able to lead a team consistently in the manner of Plunket, Benjamin, or Luck.
But the best single athletic feat I have personally witnessed was John Elway escaping the USC rush and hitting Margerum at the goal line in the 1980 USC game.
[/quote]
that's certainly the best feat i witnessed in person. can anyone find a link to a video of that play? i can still picture it in my mind, but i'd love to watch the video.
some of my favorites: john taylor's two 90+ yard catch and runs from montana
link
doug flute's miracle in miami
bo jackson reversing field, running 95 yards for the td, at 55 seconds on this video
https://247sports.com/nfl/oakland-raiders/Article/WATCH-Bo-Jacksons-greatest-runs-with-Los-Angeles-Raiders-47865477/
but my all time favorite is kenny stabler, down by 21 against new orleans on monday night football, coming back in the game so concussed that he didn't know where and when he was, and coming from behind to win. my delight is of course tempered by knowing that stabler died of chronic traumatic encephalopathy and should not have been allowed to re-enter that game (and others). but it was amazing at the time.

In the Schadenfreude category, happened to be in Dodger Stadium rooting against the Dodgers when Steve Carlton hit a grand slam to beat them. Just out of college, a co-worker and I, both from No Cal were in the company seats and obnoxiously rooting against the Dodgers. The moment he hit it, we leapt out of our seats high fiving each other before it even left the park. Fun evening.

Was not at the State Meet. (And of course it wasn’t on TV) But from it, Rick Brown winning 440, 880 and anchoring the win in the Mile relay.

Best TV moment... Franz Klammer Olympic Downhill in ‘76. Bernard Russi beaming with the best downhill run in history and then Klammer all out, a madman on skis with a run for all time.
Elway to Margerum. Hopefully Stanford still has a print of the 1980 film I directed. We used Don Klein’s call of the play over my father’s shot from the press box. Fantastic call... “He better throw it... he does... man clear in the end zone... Margerum touchdown!” I was in the back of the EZ shooting at 100fps and Elway was blocked most of the time by Trojans. Got the catch and Lott’s hit which concussed Kennie. I have a print and the original footage in my library.

Saw all of these in person
1. The 95-96 Chicago Bulls. 72-10 and a title. Still the greatest basketball team ever
2. Game 1 of the 2016 NLCS. Specifically, backup catcher Miguel Montero's pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the 8th inning. Wrigley was physically shaking from all the jumping up and down.
3. Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game against the Houtson Astros. Sat 15 rows directly behind home plate
4. 2011 Stanford @ U$C
5. Christian McCaffrey in the 2016 Rose Bowl. That dude deserved the Voldemort Trophy
Honorable mention:
National Anthem at Chicago Stadium for a Blackhawks game during Desert Storm. The loudest crowd I've ever been part of. Over 130 decibels
"Muster the ball carrier" Big Game
Kodi Whitfield's one-hander vs UCLA (IMO a great athletic feat than Francis Owusu a year later)
Mike Schmidt hitting 4 homers in a 10-inning game at Wrigley

The Miracle wasn't broadcast live in the US, only in Canada. . ..The gold medal game was live, though.

Franz Klammer '76 (probably the most exhilarating downhill run ever)
Eric Heiden '80

Best that I saw televised:
- Stanford's win over #2 (literally and figuratively) U$C. You know which one I'm talking about. 24-23 in 2007. The last half-century belonged to U$C, who had a 40-9-1 record against Stanford. This one ushered in a 10-6 record in Stanford's favor during the next 16 years.
- Stanford v. Oklahoma, Elway's performance.
- I'll echo Lex, Bumgarner's World Series performances, not just in 2014. Bum's overall postseason record is 8-3 with a 2.11 ERA, but his WS is otherworldly -- 4-0, 0.25 ERA, 0.528 WHIP, 36 innings pitched, 31 strikeouts, five walks and one miraculous save.
- The Throw. I was a sophomore in college, about 40 of us watching the NFC championship. Two miserable, obnoxious Dallas fans in the middle congratulating themselves all game (Dallas was ahead for most of it)...then, Montana to Clark.
- 2015 Warriors NBA championship, their first since 1975. Kerr, first year HC; Warriors finished reg season at 67-15; Steph, Klay, Bogut, Iggy as MVP.
- Matt Cain's perfect game, Sandoval's 3 HRs in WS against Detroit, Ishikawa's walk-off in the NLCS vs. Cardinals.
- #15 seed SCU beats #2 seed Arizona (24-3) in 1st round of 1993 NCAAs. All five of Arizona's starters (Chris Mills, Khalid Reeves, Ed Stokes, Ray Owes and Damon Stoudamire) and two of their backups (Reggie Geary, Eldrick Bohannon) would play in the NBA. Santa Clara had Nash and...?
Best that I saw in person:- 93rd Big Game, Revenge of the Play. 17 seconds left, Palumbis to McCaffrey, some Cal AH throws junk on the field, refs stop play, oh no, Palumbis throws INT, two pointer doesn't work, onside kick DOES work, Dan Byers LB recovers on 37 yard line, 9 seconds left, oh no incomplete pass, but wait, Cal roughs the passer (of course), 15 yards to the 22, 5 seconds left, John Hopkins had already made 4 FGs, but had one blocked...and he makes his fifth, a 39 yarder for the 27-25 win as time runs out. Steve Smith hold, Chuck Gillingham long snapper. Suck it, Cal.
- 1992 U. S. Open at Pebble Beach, my first live golf major. I set up in back of the 17th tee (for the US Open it played at 220 yards with the pin in the back left), and the first golfer I saw was Bernhard Langer. His tee shot was amazing, about 12 feet from the cup on the frog hair. For me, it would have been the shot of my career, just an amazing shot. Langer just looked down in disgust.
- 2009, Tim Lincecum, 15 strikeouts in a win versus the Pirates. Masterful.
- And with apologies for the self-indulgence, in 2009 my son's high school volleyball team won the largest volleyball tournament in Southern California (35 teams at the UCSB Thunderdome), first time a NorCal team won it, and my son was named tourney MVP.
