RE: Best Sports Movie Quotes - teejers1 - 01-05-2021

Wept openly at the "Wanna have a catch" line in Field of Dreams; and of course, the Billy D praising "Pic" when playing Gale Sayers.

And Lex, I can pretty much recite every line in Hoosiers:

"Progress.  Progress is electricity, school consolidation . . . and indoor plumbing."
"My team is on the floor."
"I'll make it!"

Same for The Natural - don't even get me started ("I should have been a farmer," "kinda fond of nanny goats I am," "Can't spell it, but it sure eats good.").

Back to Hoosiers, Shooter is WAY underappreciated in Hoosiers:

"I know everything there is to know about the greatest game ever invented."

"And boys, don't get caught watching the paint dry."

But my favorite Shooter line was when we first met him in the diner when he is panhandling the school principal for some coin (and his son makes him "give it up!").  Specifically, when Shooter learns that Hackman is new Coach Dale, he says to the principal (and coach):

"Did you tell him?  Sectionals in '33.  One point down.  Five . . . four . . . three . . . two  . . . one.  I let 'er fly!
In and out.  [And then, almost imperceptibly].  Yeah, well . . . I was fouled."

The fouled part was brilliant! (And what every hoopster thinks after a miss!).

There is another scene in the movie where Hopper says another line under his breath. Think it's when Hackman is telling Shooter to dry out and "come along for the ride."

Hackman:  ". . . after what Jimmy did the other night, it would take the Indiana National Guard to keep me away."
Hopper:  [Under breath]  "There's a shocker."

Something like that.  It was hilarious.

Watched Hoosiers last night and Field of Dreams tonight.  Tomorrow I think I’ll watch Remember the Titans.  With everything going on feel good sports movies just feel right.

And I’m with you on  “Want to have a catch”. Gets me every time.

I think everyone knows this movie...

Of course, “The Jon Volpe Story”. Great movie. (Except Volpe was an athlete)

Remember the Titans was strange for me, growing up in California.  I realize that RtT took place in Virginia but my high school football experience was just after that same time period and it felt like another planet, or at least another generation.

I don't care for the "Want to have a catch" sequence, but that's my own perspective.  My dad really likes it.

Pop Fisher in "The Natural": "People don't start playing ball at your age, they retire."

Greyhound with Tom Hanks on Apple+ was good.  They almost stripped away basically every story line but the battle so it was about 85 minutes of virtually non-stop action.

I liked Greyhound, but Lord! It was military,

'Midway' does not have a good script, but I did want to see it to get some idea of what it would be like to dive bomb an aircraft carrier. It certainly succeeded on that score.

RE: Best Sports Movie Quotes - Phogge - 01-06-2021

Forget the dialogue, forget the personal stories from Midway. Concentrate on the FX. Once those carriers went down so did the Japanese Empire.

Coming up is the new Battle of Britain and perhaps Tom Hardy’s Seal picture but GR doesn’t like Hardy.

RE: Best Sports Movie Quotes - Mick - 01-07-2021

I like Hardy.  I think he's really good in "Peaky Blinders," as the Krays in "Legend," "Warrior," and Dunkirk, among many others.

RE: Best Sports Movie Quotes - Phogge - 01-07-2021

I can't remember if it was GR or Doc who hated "Locke." I thought it was terrific and innovative. I know that GR hated Hardy in the Spitfire sequence in "Dunkirk." I thought it was poetic and that Nolan got robbed of Best Picture. The same thing happened to "1917." At least the best cameraman on the planet won his second Oscar for '1917."

Have you seen Bronson? He's great in that. But Mad Max Fury Road was the best of his movies. But perhaps more for the other parts of the movie than anything special he did, though he was pretty good.

RE: Best Sports Movie Quotes - Phogge - 01-07-2021

He was great in "Deception." If they ever make "War Party" I'll be first in line but the script is five years old and they still haven't started shooting.

I loved 'Locke', which has caused me to overrate Stephen Knight pictures.

Sorry GR, must have been You Know Who.

Reporter: What's your prediction for the fight?
Mr. T.: My prediction?
Reporter: Your prediction. What is it?
Mr T.: Pain.
- Rocky III

Dave: It's ok, Dad. Everybody cheats. I just didn't know it.
- Breaking Away

Cerrano: Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.
- Major League

Cerrano: Ah. Jesus! I like him very much. But he no help with curveball.
-Major League

Crash: Man, that ball got out of here in a hurry. You know, anything that travels that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it, don't you think?
-Bull Durham.

Skip: What's our record, Larry?
Larry: Eight and sixteen.
Skip: Eight and sixteen. How'd we ever win eight?
Larry: It's a miracle.
Skip: It's a miracle.
-Bull Durham

Joey: Hey! I know you! You're Kareem Abdul Jabaar. You play for the Los Angeles Lakers! .... I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense. And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try, except during the playoffs.
Clarence Murdock: The hell I don't! Listen, kid: I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night. Tell your old man to try dragging Walton and Lanier up and down the court for forty-eight minutes.
-Airplane!

Yeah, we look so much alike.

I like Hardy, but I didn't like 'Dunkirk'. Take the aircraft carriers out of 'Midway' and you have 'Dunkirk' - the whole point is the glorious flotilla of civilian vessels, and it isn't there.

GR, you mean you don't shave your scalp every morning? You aren't ripped from the neck to the toes? You don't run 20 100 yard sprints every day?

Hell, I don't go in for that sissy stuff. I play chess.
