RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - TheFarm07 - 01-15-2021

Without Haley Jones (not sure why) and Brink picking up 2 early fouls, we get off to a slow start 8-8. Then, we found our long range shooting and our defense comes up with some steals and we end the 1st quarter on a 15-0 run to take a 23-8 lead.

Kiana has found her long range stroke for this game (3/5) and Prechtel has come in and quickly chipped in 5 points.

Utah is actually shooting 43%, but they only have attempted 7 shots (compared to our 15).

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - martyup - 01-15-2021

Now 33-16 with 4:45 to play in the 2nd.  KW with 4 3s.  Everyone is getting playing time.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - bl82 - 01-15-2021

Lexie putting on an absolute defensive clinic today. Looks like an all-American.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - mbdude - 01-15-2021

Another 3 for Prechtel.
And live stats gives it to Hull

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - martyup - 01-15-2021

40-25 at the half.

ESPN stats show Prec with 2-4 and L.Hull with 1-2.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - TheFarm07 - 01-15-2021

We lead 40-25 at the half as only a late offensive outburst drew us within one point with Utah in the quarter. Our defense let up and Utah is actually shooting better than us (45% to 43.8%), the difference comes from the 12 more shot opportunities we have (courtesy of 12 turnovers by Utah and 6 offensive boards by us) and five more made 3-pointers.

Lexie, Prechtel and Williams are all in double figures already. Lexie also has 3 blocks too.

Lacie, Cameron and Kiana all have 2 fouls each, so we'll have to watch the foul situation in the second half with Jones out.

We've been denying Maxwell the opportunity to shoot the ball as she only has 3 shot attempts in the first half.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - martyup - 01-15-2021

KW now 6-9 from 3.  Shooting clinic.  Lexie has 3 blocks and a steal.  Defense clinic. Now 49-25 with 7:11 to go in the 3rd.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - TheRicker - 01-15-2021

17 FG's on 11 assists.
Up 49 -25, 7:11 left in Q3

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - martyup - 01-15-2021

61-32 after 3.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah ON NOW PAC-12 - TheFarm07 - 01-15-2021

We lead 61-32 heading into the last ten minutes. Though we've hit some 3's, we got cold towards the end of the quarter as we kept throwing up shots (and missing for the most part), but we were able to snag offensive rebounds and get multiple looks at the basket.

30 of our 52 shot attempts today has been from long range and we are hitting them at a 38% clip.

Our defense improved in the third quarter holding the Utes to single digits again. Maxwell only has attempted four shots all game long.

We win 82-54. For me, this game was a good example of how deep we are. Even without our best player not available to play and our player with the best shooting percentage sitting with foul trouble for most of the game and then fouling out in limited minutes, other players chipped in (five players in double figures) to get us the win.

We were certainly loving the three in this contest going 14/36 for a 39% clip. We attempted more threes (36) than twos (30) and had just one fewer made three (14) to made two's (15).

Our offensive rebounds (15) helped us with the missed shots and our defense also created more opportunities as well (17 turnovers by Utah).

Even though Utah made 41% of their shots (one of the better opponents' shooting performances against us), Tara's scout D limited Maxwell to just 7 points.

Hopefully, Haley will be able to play on Sunday and Brink will use this game as another learning opportunity to limit her fouls.

RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - martyup - 01-15-2021

Brink fouled out with very few minutes.  It must be frustrating to her.  Several of her fouls were mysterious.  She just stood with her hands straight up and got called.  It's hard to understand some of those calls.

Another great game for Lexie and Kia, Fran perfect at the free throw line, 5 threes for Hannah, etc. But for me, the most notable thing about this game was how well Prechtel played -- scoring, rebounding, and good D for most of the time. She had her best game of the year. I hope it's earned her more playing time down the road. IMHO, today she showed she deserves it

I wonder why  Jerome got the start over Prechtel and Brink.  She was 0-6 with only 2 rebounds.  My guess is that Jones was being punished for behavior and Jerome was being rewarded for behavior.  Just speculation on my part.  I sure hope Jones isn't hurt.  Did anyone see if she was warming up with the team?

RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - CompSci87 - 01-15-2021

In other news, I saw on the UConn board that one of their signees for next year is graduating from high school early and will enroll early and join the team soon. It's Saylor Poffenbarger, who I think we also had recruiting interest in at one point.

Seems like a great year to do that if you can, since the NCAA is giving everyone who plays this year an extra year both of eligibility and the clock, so they get 6 years to use 5 seasons of eligibility instead of 5 to use 4. Plus many high schools and AAU teams may be not be playing or may be playing reduced seasons.

I hope Jones has a minor injury.  If it's disciplinary, it could lead to a fractured relationship n the future.

Nice, "easy" (because nothing is really easy) win.  I hope Hayley is ok.  She looked ok walking around, no boot or brace I could see in the brief times I spied her, so knock wood all is well or will be very shortly.  Very nice to see all those threes go in, especially for Kiana.  Lexie had an excellent game.  Ashten was quite good, another good sign.  The more I see of Jana, the more I like her game.  She has a motor and runs things quickly and authoritatively.  Plus she can shoot.  Hannah had a very nice game too. Most players out there did. I don't think this was close to the best they can play, but low turnovers and a blowout win is fantastic.

i agree that there wasn't much to the fouls, but to my eye she stepped forward a bit, maybe 6 to 12", into the offensive player. so, contact with her body rather than her hands. i watched belibi defend for a bit, and, by contrast, fran jumped straight up.

all that said. she seemed a bit lost on the court today, especially on defense - out of position and reacting late. not her usual self.  i remember her looking like that in the mcd all american game, but not previously at stanford.

RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - Baez87 - 01-15-2021

Great to see the game kudos distributed across several players. And nice to see some of the bench players getting significant minutes at this point of the season. It’s a luxury to be able to see Ki and Jana share the forty minute PG minutes almost equally; plus, it seemed to be a confidence builder for Jana, something that will benefit us going forward.
And what about Haley? As tempting as it might be for me to interject some intrigue into the mix, my guess is based on what is known and observable. For those that have been watching, we’ve seen nothing but an upbeat, team-oriented, and cooperative attitude from Haley, both in her high school play and in her year with Stanford. And we all know that she sat out with an undisclosed injury for much of last season. Based on those two observations, my guess to explain her absence today would be one of two things. She might still be nurturing a bit of tenderness in the knee, which would be a good reason to sit her against a lesser team, and let it heal. The other conjecture that I would make, if her knee is healing fine, is that Tara sees her as an exceedingly valuable asset and wishes to give her a day off mid-season. If Haley can maintain her good health, we have almost three more years to watch her dazzle our opponents and entertain the fans.
