Silly call against Brink at 2:53 in Q2. Have the officials turn into mercy mode? Seems early.
45-30 Stanford after Q2.
USC not shooting well.

USC seemed to deflate after Pili went out. That is a tough break, after she worked so hard for so long to come back, to turn that ankle again.
I think so much of our game depends on three point shooting. It is not just that the three point shots are nice, but that they open up the floor for all kinds of movement. When defenders have to guard the three point line closely, it makes all those interior passes more successful and less likely to be deflected. And guess what? We hit three times as many treys in the first half as in the UCLA game total. No wonder things are working better!
And where did it all begin? Williams is 3/5 from three point range.
There are things in that half to not like, though. Brink with 2 fouls, 10 turnovers is above our not-so-great average. A lot of those were unforced errors with attempts for spectacular assists that just were not there.
Note: we have 7 O-boards in the first half, SC has 2. That is a lot better than the last two games, but USC is not known as a great rebounding team. Still, I'll take it.
Note: our 10 turnovers are against SC's 3. Imagine what the score would be if we were even.

When defenders have to come out to defend 3-point shots, there is more room inside for our own offensive rebounds (esp. the shooter can often rebound better than her defender). We could have used that against UCLA;.
68-47 after Q3. We let them back in for a while, and then got back up enough to start subbing more.

Looking fairly good against a sluggish USC team. Area for possible improvement is pass selection. Some fantastic passes resulting in baskets. More passes that were not so good.
I don't know what to make of Prechtel. Her rebounding in a crowd leaves a lot to be desired. Most of her rebounds are balls that bounce to her by happenstance. The situations where she is in a crowd and has to position herself doesn't work out as well as I would expect based on her height and size.

Prechtel does not have hops, a negative to her height.

Well, that win was a great relief to this fan, as I am sure it was to Tara and the players. We have a real gauntlet coming up, playing a hot WSU team twice on an always-difficult road trip to the snowy Palouse. It was good to see Brink play well today, and to have 4 players in double digits. 18 turnovers is not at all good--and I hate to say it, but 5 of them were on Jones. But senior Williams gets the game ball--her 5/8 three point shooting set the tone and opened up the offense.

Rebounding was much better. There were 40 rebounds on the USC side of the court, we captured 35 of them, an 88% defensive rebound percentage. On our side, there were 35 rebounds, and we captured 18, a 51% offensive rebound percentage, which is phenomenal. We had five players with at least five rebounds (Brink with 9, Jones with 11, Lexie with 5, Wilson with 7, and Belibi with 7).
50% shooting; 40% three point shooting, while holding SC to 38% shooting, 33% from three.
The turnovers are an ongoing issue, and 16 assists on 33 made baskets means a few too many times we were beating SC 1 on 1, which is fine against SC, but would be more problematic against a better team.

Stanford 86, USC 59
50% FG (33/66) Good
40% 3FG% (10/25) Good
83.3% FT% (10/12) Nice
16 assists on 40 FG. Ok.
18 TO on 72 possessions. Poor.
18 OR out of 35 rebounds under Stanford basket. Excellent
35 DR out of 40 rebounds under USC basket. Quite good.
12 PF. Ok
6 BL. Good
5 ST. OK (USC 6)
24 bench points
44 paint points
2 fast break points
+/- Jones +24, Brink +22
Time: Williams 30; Jones 29
Opponent
37.7% FG (23/61)
33.3% 3FG (3/12)
A relatively easy win over a weaker opponent. For most of the game they were quite weak in the post.
I think we kept starters in longer than I wish, but considering that we came off two losses, I can understand it.
But we have so many games in such a short time, I worry about it.
Brink's 2nd foul should not have been called. I thought she did a good job late in the game with 3 fouls just being a vertical impediment on their shots.

Agree and agree. This was the first time I have seen her play defense in that disciplined way--reaching straight up and being an impediment without constantly reaching and trying for the block. It worked.

That was definitely a much better effort. I still worry though that if the threes are not falling the offense is not quite where it needs to be. A few interesting things were said in the press conferences post-game. Kiana said she is on track to graduate this quarter, which makes me wonder if she plans to come back next season. I forget who said it, but Tara or one of the players said they are not able to practice as much as a normal season. that puts them at a big disadvantage compared to all the other teams and may explain the struggles the past two games - just not really able to improve as well as Stanford teams usually do. It also seems like focus in the middle of all this, and energy as well, as issues that are new due to this never be at home season.

Very happy to see Brink in the starting lineup! And glad to see her stay on the court. Her combination of rebounding, shot blocking, and scoring are so valuable to the team. We need as much of it as she can give. If she puts in work in the weight room during the offseason...look out.
Also, wouldn't mind seeing Brink at the 4 and Belibi at the 5 together more often. Maybe get a little high-low action going? They typically aren't on the court at the same time. In games where we are getting killed on the glass, a lineup of those two + Haley and Lexi, would be a pretty solid rebounding group.
Go Card!
