That's the biggest spread of all 4 elite 8 games. U Conn is at 4.0 over Baylor, Indiana 2.5 over Arizona, S Carolina at 8.5 over Texas.

So anyone know why, with a 6'5" player and two 6'4" players on the bench, Louisville routinely goes with a four-guard, short lineup, with a single 6'3" forward?

Is this because their taller players are injured, not very good, or just that Walz prefers a small and speedy lineup?

Over at Walz World the Louisville fans are asking the same question.  Some are worried, others say the win against Oregon proves a small lineup can work for them.  But here is one of their fans who is a skeptic:

Quote:Not even a little bit. We beat a team who's best guards where watching from the sideline. If we stay within' 20 of Stanford, i might change my mind, a little. Being the smallest team will never be an advantage. We play very hard, that's a given, but that don't get you rebounds, or help get your shot off agains't taller players. We played our best ball in this tourney with Dixon, Balogun and Konno giving us more size. I see the same thing happening tomorrow. But will it be enough, i sure hope so but don't see it being close in reality. Sorry, but i call em' like i see um'. It would take a perfect shooting night to give us a chance. That could happen i suppose. 3's better be falling for us, that's for sure. If Jeff is reading, please play Dixon more than 25 minute's. Please. LOL.

I believe he prefers "small and speedy", for ball pressure.  Certainly has been effective up to this point.

It's highly likely that Louisville's plan will be to pressure on the perimeter. Walz has already made a statement about that. Obviously, they want to try and stop our 3 point shooting, but also I suspect that they think (and perhaps other coaches) that putting pressure on our guards can disrupt our offense and possibly lead to turnovers. When Kianna and Anna are comfortable and in charge, we are very hard to stop.

So the key will be us being able to adapt to Plan B if they do pressure the perimeter. That means Ki, Annna, Lexie, Haley, and even Jump taking it to the rack - over and over again, scoring over and over again (also with some O rebounds and put backs by our bigs), and drawing fouls on Louisville players over and over again. It also means careful passes to our bigs for them to score and wide open back door cuts for scores.

Over playing the perimeter by a D opens up a tremendous number of opportunities and we will need to take advantage. Yes, Brink will have a big game as could Prechtel and/or Belebi, but really the key is penetration by our guards and wings. Some great screens plus getting defenders a step behind or leaning the wrong way and our players can blow by them.

The match up of our D vs their O if they go small is in our favor. Our guards and wings can keep up with their speed, and our length will shut them down. My bet is that Walz has to adjust midway in the game and use his bigs.

I don't underestimate Louisville at all. Like every other team remaining, they are very good. We just need to be tough, energetic, and play our game.

we will often put 4 at the perimeter and a post inside.

if you tightly guard all 4 at the perimeter, haley will drive and score 40 points.

At the risk of jinxing Stanford's chances, I'm probably going to be at the game Tuesday night.  Anyone else want to meet up?  (Or should I get tickets in a certain section?)

Quote:"It's got to start with ball pressure," Walz said. "Olivia Cochran and Liz Dixon, you know, aren't going to get a ton of credit or a bunch of praise because everybody likes to look at what people do offensively."

In other words, he thinks he has 2 Anna Wilsons.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Louisville Elite 8 (Tuesday 6pm) - BillBradley - 03-29-2021

A sure fire way to lose this game is to shoot lots of contested threes and make a low percentage. I hope we look inside a lot, and then pass back out for wide open threes if nothing's there. Cam needs to stay on the court because she is our best passing big (along with the rebounds, finishes, blocks, etc.). We need the same referee crew as the UConn-Baylor game!

The Stanford bench has started 100 games in their Stanford careers. A note from another board That’s depth

Most of those must be Lacie and Alyssa. I don't recall Emma, Hanna, and Jana starting. Fran started a few early this year. I'm leaning towards Ashton not having started either.

100 seems like too many for the majority to be between Lacie and Alyssa.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Louisville Elite 8 (Tuesday 6pm) - mbdude - 03-30-2021

Ashten started 4 or 5 games in a row last year after Haley injury

Lacie 65, go from there

Looked at gostanford...Lacie started 30 of 36 games as frosh. 17 of 31 as soph. That's 47 at the start of this year.

Alyssa started 1 as frosh, 11 as soph, and 13 as junior. That's 25 at the start of this year.

Both Ashton and Fran started 6 games each as frosh.

That's a total of 84 starts to begin the year. With Fran's starts this year, it is in the 90s at least and fair to say that it's 100. Surprised, but turns out to be true.

If they go small, I think Jones and Lexie will eat them up on drive and pull-ups.  We will simply need to hit FTs, which is usually easier said than done for us.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Louisville Elite 8 (Tuesday 6pm) - 81alum - 03-30-2021

When we have the ball, it will all be about keeping hold of the ball.  If we can prevent them from discombobulating us into turnovers, then our offense beats their defense.

When they have the ball, they have three three point shooters to worry about--two very good ones.  So we will need more than Anna to play well on the perimeter today.  If we keep them from hitting many threes, then I think our size inside will prevent many layups, and our defense will beat their offense.

I think Louisville's 4 guard lineup is predicated on the idea that an opposing team's "big" will have trouble defending a smaller quicker player on the perimeter.  Luckily for us, Jones and Belibi are very good perimeter defenders.
