If players don't know differently (they have always been "managed" from the bench), the fun is there. Us older types, who played in a different era (little league for me) when communication from the bench was rare, notice the difference.

You want free play, go watch a freaking travel ball tournament. Those money grubbing daddy ball coaches don't teach anything during the 50 games they play during a tournament!

And, think about the best men's basketball we've ever had at Stanford: under Montgomery, the offense was extremely structured. And, in the vast majority of games, it worked well for us.

We started out wiring umps, that's what the Commish limited us to do. Then managers, coaches. The best wire ever never made air. Lasorda and Garvey almost coming to blows in the Morgan game, the last time Little Stevie wore Dodger Blue. We wire a number of players each week for Films but so far the practice is banned for the Networks. Best part of Inside the NFL because it's in the heat of action and the reflective time between possessions.
I hate the announcers talking to baseball players in-game. Most players are vacant and most announcers answer their own questions. Every questioning announcer should be made to study Mike Wallace's style and ask the question quickly in a way that elicits a useable answer. Jack Buck doesn't get it and it's why his HBO show tanked. I'd throw in studying Costas too. He and Mike the best I ever worked with.

Post game totally different but most announcers don't follow up and blow the chance to go off on a more important tangent. Let me be clearer. Wallace was given a page of questions generated by the producer. He would look it over and put it away. He would ask a question and LISTEN. If he missed something the producer would wait and at a magazine change (tape change after we gave up film) the producer would confer with Mike (and he better be succinct).
Most reporter/correspondents care more about how they look and love to hear themselves talk. The worst sports interviewer is a guy named Kreuger on KNBR. He gives an answer to his question before the subject can speak.
Most everybody in the industry today thinks he/her is CB DeMille. In reality however they are CB DeIphone.

Ralph Barbieri was the worst at that.
Agree that short, open-ended interview questions are better - let the interviewee tell you his/her answer (not regurgitate yours). Also agree that some announcers "lead" because they like to hear themselves talk and want to be seen as smart in anticipating the response. But sometimes I get the sense the questioner provides a possible answer just so the interviewee doesn't freeze up or can't think of anything. It's still not the interviewee's answer, but at least the sentiment of the "leader" was okay. I think that's why Krueger does it - or at least I recall instances where that was my impression.

Don Hewitt would have fired Kreuger first day.

Ralph Barbieri was just the worst all around.

After the 1996 Olympics Barbieri had Tara on. She had just coached the Olympic team to the championship
He asked her would you be interested in being an assistant in the NBA. Tara said why? I’m already a head coach
I Loved it
